September 1, 2014
To see a map of the park and our route for Day 2, skip to 12:59.
Our second day in Wulingyuan National Park was filled with a lot of fog. Fortunately we realized this in the morning on the bus ride to TianZi Mountain (TianZiShan). So we decided to head down the mountain where we figured it would be clearer. We were right! Yay!
We hiked from WangQiaoTai to Golden Whip Stream and then on to the SenLin Park Entrance. In total, this took about three hours. Most of the hikers were going in the opposite direction, which I imagine took much longer because it's primarily uphill. The hike was absolutely gorgeous, and we're so happy we did it!
To get back to the top of the mountain, we took a bus for 10 RMB/person from the bus station just outside the SenLin Park Entrance to to the town of Wulinyuan then walked to the Wulingyuan Park Entrance. While on our first day we took the bus to the Bailong Elevator, on our second day we decided to bus to the cable car to TianZi Mountain. It cost 67 RMB/person for the cable car ride. It was a nice ride but we didn't see much because of the thick fog. The same was true at TianZi Moutain. Still, we had fun walking around the quiet paths and getting a glimpse of the mountain paths without many other tourists around.
As always, thank you for watching!!

Video for Tianmen Mountains here:
Keep in mind that Zhangjiajie City (where the Tianmen Mountains are) and Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (“Avatar Mountains”) are 1.5 hours apart from each other.
How did we get to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park?
As mentioned before we were staying in Zhangjiajie City; on the first day we took the bus for 1.5 hours to go to Wulinyuan Bus Station (20 CNY/person for a single journey) and then walked 10 min until the Wulinyuan Entrance. On the second day we went Zhangjiajie National Forest Park Entrance (15 CNY/person for a single journey).
How much does it cost?
We paid 245 CNY/person to enter the park, 72 CNY/person for the elevator and another 72 CNY/person for the cable car. The tickets were valid for 4 dates from the date of purchase and they were non-transferable, a fingerprint is saved on the card. The shuttle buses are for free.
What to expect from Zhangjiajie National Forest Park?
- Amazing views! I just can’t describe how beautiful and unique this place is. The 21 hours I spent on that train were well worth it.
- A very well maintained park, enjoyable and easy to walk around.
- A lot of tourist at the most scenic spots.
- Very little English, even though the parks have lots of signs, not everything is signed posted. I would advise to have a map with you, and make sure the name of the places are in English and Chinese so you can always point them out to bus drivers or employees.
Tips:
- Before getting on a bus, always double check with the bus driver. The buses are only showing Chinese writings.
- Bring cash with you, after paying for the entrance tickets you will have to pay for cable cars, the elevator, food, water, etc.
- Plan ahead where you want to go, especially if you don’t have much time, the park is huge and you will not be able to cover it all in one day.
What did we do in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park?
Day 1:
We wanted to go to the elevator first to avoid the long queues, so from Wulinyuan Entrace we took the bus to the Bailong Elevator directly; once we got there we brought the tickets for 72 CNY/person one way.
The view was really nice, we got our first pictures and some grilled potatoes for breakfast. Then we walked to the parking, and got another bus to go to The Greatest Natural Bridge and the Heaven Pillar (Hallelujah Mountain). I almost missed the natural bridge because it was signed post as First Bridge. This is beautiful, we spent almost all morning on this part of the park, the views are unique, amazing, the whole place doesn’t seem real!.
After asking several employees we made it to the Tianqiao Stop, this was actually a big parking, there is a KFC, souvenir shops, toilets and a restaurant. From there, we took another bus to the Yangjiajie Cableway Parking, looked at the Natural Great Wall (nice but you can skip this if you want) and walked towards the Tinabo Mansion. There were a lot of stairs going up and down so we decided to go back, it was getting late and we were not sure if it was worth the time and effort. I wished I could have searched in Google!
From Yangjiajie Cableway Parking we hopped on another bus to Tianzi Mountain (Helong Park) Stop, again we found more souvenir shops and food stalls, don’t worry there is no lack of food in this park!. We walked around several view points, but in my opinion the best one was Yunqing Rock.
We took another bus to go to the Upper Station of the Tianzi Mountain Cableway, we paid another 72 CNY/person and went on the cable car; this ride is amazing, maybe it would have been nicer to see this going up instead of down, but we were afraid of the possible long queues at the elevator.
Finally, we got our last bus to Wulinyuan Entrace at 4:30 pm.
Day 2:
On our second day we decided that we didn’t want to pay for cable cars/elevator, but still wanted to take advantage of the 4-day ticket. This time we took a bus to the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park Entrance and walked along the Golden Whip Stream. I recommend this trail if you are not into hiking and just want to enjoy an easy and beautiful walk. It's well worth it as you get a different perspective of the impressive limestone pillars from the bottom. I can’t remember but I think it took us around 2 hours to complete, we only stopped to have some grilled potatoes and take some videos/photos. If you are carrying food, be aware of the monkeys, if they see anything they will take it out of your hands/pockets for sure.
After the Golden Whip Stream there is a parking from where we took a bus to Wulinyuan Entrace, walked to the Bus Station and got back to Zhangjiajie City.
Zhangjiajie is amazing! It was one of my main reasons to come to China and I must say that it didn’t disappointed me at all.

Golden Whip Stream Zhangjiajie National Park, China
Zhangjiajie National Park was the first national park in China and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's unusual geographic features makes it a popular tourist destination for both Chinese and foreigners especially if you've seen the new movie, Avatar. Why? Zhangjiajie's karst peaks were used as background in Avatar and I'm sure you'll recognize them.
Zhangjiajie is set in a subtropical forest with 243 peaks surrounded by over 3,000 karst upthrusts formed 380 million years ago when this area was at the bottom of the sea. It took a full day for ex-Marine (husband, Steve) and Travels With Sheila to explore only one portion of this huge park. Come along...
Zhangjiajie- CHINA (Avatar Mountains, Baofeng lake, Golden Whip Stream)
I have wanted to come to Zhangjiajie for so long now! Its one of those places that somebody has to tell you about... Easily the most beautiful place I've been to in my life. Pictures and videos defiantly do not do it justice.

ZHANGJIAJIE_Yuanjiajie and Golden Whip Stream.
Zhangjiajie is located in the NW part of Hunan province. The mountainous area takes up 76% of the area. The most characteristic feature is the quartz sandstone landform. A cablecar took us up to the Yuanjiajie Nature reserve to view an amazing forest of peaks rising from a deep canyon. After admiring the natural land bridge(First Bridge In The World), the trail led us to the Mihun Stage (Mihun which, in Chinese, means one's mind being carried away by the miraculous scenery). The sandstone pinnacle here is the prototype of Hallelujah Mountain of Pandora in the Avatar movie. Rode the world's tallest glass elevator_Bailong Elevator _ built onto the side of a huge cliff in Zhangjiajie ,a whopping 1,070 feet high. Bailong Elevator has set three Guinness world Records i.e. World's tallest full-exposure outdoor elevator, world's tallest double-deck sightseeing elevator and world's fastest passenger traffic elevator with biggest carrying capacity.More scenery at the base of the elevator before heading for the Golden Whip Stream flowing thro' the world's most beautiful valley.
