Pulp Fiction in Five Minutes - By Scott Bradlee and Ben Golder-Novick
Cover songs? They were pretty cool a decade ago. But this is 2010, and covering entire SOUNDTRACKS is where it's at.
The always entertaining Ben Golder-Novick dropped by to help me recreate Quentin Tarantino's classic soundtrack, in its entirety (sort of), for saxophone and piano.
The songs featured (in order of appearance):
Misirlou - Dick Dale
Jungle Boogie - Kool & the Gang
Let's Stay Together - Al Green
Bustin' Surfboards - The Tornadoes
Lonesome Town - Rick Nelson
Son of a Preacher Man - Dusty Springfield
You Never Can Tell - Chuck Berry
Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon - Urge Overkill
If Love Is a Red Dress (Hang Me in Rags) - Maria McKee
Comanche - Peter Green
Flowers on the Wall - The Statler Brothers
Surf Rider - The Lively Ones

Dr Todd Capson - What keeps him awake at night over ocean management? (2/5)
On Wednesday 2 July 2014 the Institute hosted a meeting with Dr Todd Capson, a marine scientist working with the US-based Sustainable Fisheries Partnership. This discussion has now been published as a series of videos on our Youtube channel. During the meeting Dr Capson addressed the implications of ocean acidification for aquaculture industries in the US and in New Zealand, as well as the broader changes taking place in international oceans policy.
Dr Todd Capson was asked to introduce himself and to answer four questions. This was followed by an open discussion.
• Introduction
• What keeps him awake at night over ocean management?
• How he thinks ocean policy may play out over the next 20–30 years?
• How he thinks ocean management should play out over the next 20–30 years?
• What New Zealand/New Zealanders might do to contribute?
In addition to Institute staff we also invited the speakers from our One Ocean event: Ann McCrone (WWF New Zealand), Bronwyn Golder (Pew Charitable Trusts) and James Palmer (Ministry for the Environment). You can view their talks from this event on our YouTube playlist. Bronwyn and Ann were able to join us however James was already committed. In his place Nic Hill and Pierre Tellier, also from MfE, joined us. Also present were representatives from the US Embassy in Wellington who were kind enough to organise this meeting.
From 24 June to 9 July 2014 Dr Capson undertook a brief tour of New Zealand raising awareness of recent developments in oceans policy in the United States and internationally and also served as a keynote speaker at the Otago Foreign Policy School on 28 June 2014.

SUMMARY
=======
A suburb is a mixed-use or residential area, existing either as part of a city or urban area or as a separate residential community within commuting distance of a city. In most English-speaking countries, suburban areas are defined in contrast to central or inner-city areas, but in Australian English and South African English, suburb has become largely synonymous with what is called a neighborhood in other countries and the term extends to inner-city areas. In some areas, such as Australia, India, China, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and parts of the United States and Canada, new suburbs are routinely annexed by adjacent cities. In others, such as Saudi Arabia, France, and much of the United States and Canada, many suburbs remain separate municipalities or are governed as part of a larger local government area such as a county. In the United States, beyond the suburbs are exurbs, or exurban areas, with less density but linked to the metropolitan area economically and by commuters.
Suburbs first emerged on a large scale in the 19th and 20th centuries as a result of improved rail and road transport, which led to an increase in commuting. In general, they have lower population densities than inner city neighborhoods within a metropolitan area, and most residents commute to central cities or other business districts; however, there are many exceptions, including industrial suburbs, planned communities, and satellite cities. Suburbs tend to proliferate around cities that have an abundance of adjacent flat land.

SUMMARY
=======
Ernest Rutherford, 1st Baron Rutherford of Nelson, HFRSE LLD (30 August 1871 – 19 October 1937), was a New Zealand-born British physicist who came to be known as the father of nuclear physics. Encyclopædia Britannica considers him to be the greatest experimentalist since Michael Faraday (1791–1867).In early work, Rutherford discovered the concept of radioactive half-life, the radioactive element radon, and differentiated and named alpha and beta radiation. This work was performed at McGill University in Canada. It is the basis for the Nobel Prize in Chemistry he was awarded in 1908 for his investigations into the disintegration of the elements, and the chemistry of radioactive substances, for which he was the first Canadian and Oceanian Nobel laureate.
Rutherford moved in 1907 to the Victoria University of Manchester (today University of Manchester) in the UK, where he and Thomas Royds proved that alpha radiation is helium nuclei. Rutherford performed his most famous work after he became a Nobel laureate. In 1911, although he could not prove that it was positive or negative,
he theorized that atoms have their charge concentrated in a very small nucleus,
and thereby pioneered the Rutherford model of the atom, through his discovery and interpretation of Rutherford scattering by the gold foil experiment of Hans Geiger and Ernest Marsden. He conducted research that led to the first splitting of the atom in 1917 in a nuclear reaction between nitrogen and alpha particles, in which he also discovered (and named) the proton.Rutherford became Director of the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge in 1919. Under his leadership the neutron was discovered by James Chadwick in 1932 and in the same year the first experiment to split the nucleus in a fully controlled manner was performed by students working under his direction, John Cockcroft and Ernest Walton. After his death in 1937, he was honoured by being interred with the greatest scientists of the United Kingdom, near Sir Isaac Newton's tomb in Westminster Abbey. The chemical element rutherfordium (element 104) was named after him in 1997.
Beethoven Goes to Seaside - Acoustic Techno Remix
Imagine this...
You're chillin with your bros at Club Karma in Seaside Heights, wishing that the DJ would play some classical music so that you could get your fist pump on-- preferably, classical music as played by a pianist and saxophonist that are not classical musicians.
Your prayers have been answered. I teamed up with saxophonist Ben Golder-Novick (of Eight Bits of Jam fame) to create this mashup of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, Enur's Calabria 2007, Reel 2 Real's I Like to Move It, Daft Punk's Da Funk, and Darude's Sandstorm.

Rolling in the Crazy in Love (Adele / Gnarls Barkley/ Beyonce Mashup)
Scott's Album:
Back in June, I put together a crazy show of 1920's style mashups that [somewhat obliquely] told the story of the life of Thomas Jefferson. You can kind of think of it as that Glee tv show, infused with erroneous American history and set in the Prohibition years. Here's some live footage from our show at Theater Bar- featuring Alysha Umphress on lead vocals, Lauren Molina and Leslie McDonel on backups, Adam Kubota on bass, Allan Mednard on drums, and the Monti-cellos: Kristine Kruta on cello and complaints about the tempo, Jake Falby and Molly Fletcher on violin, and Trevor New on viola. Mixed and recorded live by Stephen Kellner. Ben Golder-Novick also plays sax off-mic and contributes some backup dancing. And that's me dressed as TJ.

A Michael Jackson Piano Medley - 16 Songs in 7 Minutes by Scott Bradlee- RIP MJ
My downloadable mp3s:
My Facebook:
After I did that 80's ragtime video, I realized I made a glaring omission by failing to include any Michael Jackson tunes. After all, the first album I owned was Michael Jackson's Bad. Not only that, but the first song I ever performed was Man in the Mirror, at a school talent show at age 6.
In light of this and, of course, recent events, I figure that MJ deserves his own [non-ragtime] medley and threw one together.
I used bits and pieces of the following songs (with a healthy dose of improvisation):
I Want You Back
Billie Jean
Rock With You
Ben
The Way You Make Me Feel
Off the Wall
Smooth Criminal
Human Nature
I'll Be There
Thriller
Black or White
Bad
P.Y.T.
Beat It
Man in the Mirror
We are the World
