Sibebe Rock in Mbabane, Swaziland
Sibebe Rock in Mbabane, Swaziland
Sibebe is a granite mountain in Eswatini, located 10 km from the capital city Mbabane. It is the second-largest monolith in the world and the largest exposed granite pluton, rising 350m above the valley of the Mbuluzi River. It is also known as 'Bald Rock'.
Sibebe Rock, just north of Mbabane, is one of southern Africa’s most impressive geological features. This immense three-billion-year-old volcanic slab, which rises to a height of 1,488m and covers some 16,500ha, is the world’s largest granite dome. Only Australia’s Uluru pips it to the title of ‘world’s largest rock’. Uluru is actually an eroded sandstone inselberg – in other words, formed of layers of sediment. Sibebe, by contrast, is a batholith: it welled up through the earth’s crust in one great molten bubble before cooling to form a massif of sheer granite.
It is hard to appreciate the scale of Sibebe from below. That’s partly because there is no single spot from which the whole rock is visible. The best way to see it is, of course, to climb it.
On top, you will find a wonderland of huge sculpted boulders and gleaming slopes of exfoliating granite. Trails radiate in all directions, leading to caves, waterfalls and hidden pockets of indigenous forest. There is even a large meadow where – amazingly – a small population of wild horses roams the lush grazing. The flora is impressive, with orchids and other wild flowers carpeting the grasslands from October to December, and wild bananas (Strelitzia nicolai) fluttering their tattered, flag-like leaves in the forested clefts. You might also spot highveld birds, such as jackal buzzard, buff-streaked chat, ground woodpecker and – if you’re lucky – even a Verreaux’s eagle or blue swallow. But remember that this is Swazi Nation Land, not a nature reserve. You will also meet wandering cattle and their herdboys, and on the eastern slopes you’ll spy the small homesteads of those who live up here.

Special Assignment - Swaziland and the Dlamini dynasty, 16 March 2014
SWAZILAND AND THE DLAMINI DYNASTY
On the 7th May 2014, twenty years after the dawn of its democracy, South Africa will hold its fifth elections. Democracy has brought freedoms to ordinary South Africans, who are protected under our Constitution, whose fundamental values are human dignity, equality and freedom.
But what has political liberation meant for South Africans in relation to human rights struggles elsewhere on the continent? Should we use our freedom to ensure the rights of fellow Africans to embrace the democratic principles for which we fought and won?
One such country is Swaziland, where to date, political parties are banned, activists face imprisonment and some of them live in exile because they dared to question the system of governance in that country. According to the Human Rights Watch, under Swazi law and custom, all powers are vested in the king. Although Swaziland has a prime minister who is supposed to exercise executive authority, in reality, King Mswati holds supreme executive powers and control over the judiciary and legislature.
It further states that the Kingdom of Swaziland, ruled by King Mswati III since 1986, is in the midst of a serious crisis of governance which it blames on years of extravagant expenditure by the royal family, fiscal indiscipline, and government corruption. The country is reported to have one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in the world, 80 percent of the population lives on less than US$2 per day and has an unemployment rate of about 40 percent.
This week's Special Assignment brings you a documentary on the political situation in that country, where authorities continue to face internal and external pressure from civil society activists and trade unionists to implement economic reforms and open up the space for civil and political activism.

Swaziland – Africa’s last monarchy
“Swaziland – Africa’s last monarchy” is a documentary about activist Bheki Dlamini by Danish journalist Tom Heinemann.
The film describes the fight for democracy and socio-economic justice in the tiny sub-Saharan absolute monarchy of Swaziland through the eyes of Bheki Dlamini, a young activist and leading member of Swaziland’s largest banned political party, the People’s United Democratic Movement (PUDEMO).
Swazi Cultural Village in Manzini, Swaziland
Mantenga Nature Reserve and Cultural Village offers travellers to Swaziland the unique twin focus of discovering both Swazi culture and the local natural environment.
Cultural Village - Situated adjacent to the camp the Swazi Cultural Village is a living museum of old traditions and represents a classic Swazi lifestyle during the 1850's. A typical visit includes a 30 minute guided tour and a 45 minute dancing display. It is a great photo opprtunity.
The Mantenga Cultural Village is a large family homestead of sixteen huts, each with its own specific purpose as well as kraals for cattle and goats, reed fences that serve as windbreaks and various other structures. The building material is strictly traditional: poles, grass, reeds, leather stripes, earth and dried cow dung. With the traditional artifacts on display, the village illustrates many facets of the ancient Swazi way of life: social, economic and religious. The objective of the cultural village is to enable visitors from all over the world, as well as urbanised Swazis, to maintain a positive interest in Swazi cultural heritage. This includes language, customs and practices, rituals, dance, music, folklore, arts and crafts. After the its official opening, it was named Ligugu Lemaswati by his Majesty King Mswati III, meaning The pride of the Swazi People.
On entry, the village people, often wearing traditional clothing, will warmly welcome you. The standard Swazi greeting to the family is Yebo Nkosi. The village life is very relaxed and your guide will talk you through how the huts and traditional items are made as well as teach you the Siswati words for them. Interaction is encouraged, so try your hand at grinding maize and plaiting mountain grass or join in a Swazi song or dance. A taste of local food is sometimes possible, as well as traditional brew.
Ringing with the sounds of birds, barking baboons, drum beats and singing, this is one of the best value accommodation venues in Swaziland providing easy access to many surrounding attractions in Mbabane, Malkerns, Manzini, and of course the nearby Ezulwini Valley. Immediately within the nature reserve, the Swazi Cultural Village and the Mantenga Waterfallare popular attractions.
Previously known as Mantenga Tented Camp, this venue has been upgradedduring 2010 to offer rooms or cabins, on a bed and breakfast (B&B) basis. Although its spread out design resembles a typical nature reserve camp, we'd by more inclined to call this style of accommodation a lodge, as it is not self-catering and three meals a day can be sourced via the camp's central restaurant facility.
There is occasional wildlife in the area such as warthog, nyala and vervet monkey which can be spotted whilst walking between the facilities. They are quietly tolerant of human presence.
Although this small 725 hectare area was purchased as early as 1979 by the Swaziland National Trust Commission (a government body) it was only developed from 1994 onwards. Facilities are therefore relatively new and well-presented, with the most recent upgrade, being a substantial investment in terms of both the conversion from tented units to cottages and the very sumptuous furnishing thereof. The management of accommodation facilities and cultural village is typically put out to tender, and is the responsibility of a private sector operator.
The Mantenga area is a favourite launch pad for visitors wishing to undertake Swazi Trails activities, as the reserve is only 1km away from the company's trip departure point for white-water rafting, adventure caving, MTBing and guided tours.
