Essaouira (Amazigh: ⵎⵓⴳⴰⴹⵓⵔ Taṣṣurt, Arabic: الصويرة, as-Ṣawīra) is a city in the western Moroccan economic region of Marrakech-Tensift-Al Haouz, on the Atlantic coast. The city was known in the time of 11th-century Geographer al-Bakri and, as he reported, was called Sidi Megdoul. In the 16th-century, a corruption of this name became known to the Portuguese as Mogador or Mogadore. The Amazigh and Arabic names mean the wall, a reference to the fortress walls that originally enclosed the city.

مدينة الصويرة (بالأمازيغية: ⵎⵓⴳⴰⴹⵓⵔ) هي مدينة مغربية مطلة على المحيط الأطلسي لها تاريخ عريق، وذات طابع معماري متميز. شهدت مدينة الصويرة في السنوات الأخيرة نشاطا سياحيا كبيرا. تاريخها يرجع إلى ما قبل الميلاد فالفنيقيون جعلوا منها قنطرة للرسو في جزيرة موغادور حين كانوا يسافرون عبر البحر إلى الإكوادور.
يوبا الثاني ملك موريتانية الطنجية أنجز فيها معملا لصناعة الصباغات المستخرجة من المحار (بالفرنسية: la pourpre) - إحدى أنواع الرخويات - وكان يصدرها للرومان. بعد ذلك استقر بها البرتغاليون والسلاطين السعديين. فالفاتح الحقيقي والواضع مدينة الصويرة في مسارها الجغرافي والتارخي هو السلطان العلوي سيدي محمد الثالث بن عبد الله الذي أوكل مهمة إعادة بنائها في نسختها الحالية إلى تيودور كومود في سنة 1760 م.
مدينة الصويرة تحتوي بكتافة على العديد من الساحات والأسوار للأثار التاريخية الساحرة والعظيمة. هذه التحفة مليئة ببنايات أثرية متناسقة، ارث ثقافي من أجيال سابقة مع بنايات عصرية موضوعية ونكتشف من خلالها أسوار، سقالة la sqala بأبواب ضخمة.
