20th September 1835: The start of the Ragamuffin War
The early 1830s had seen gaucho ranchers in southern Brazil growing increasingly frustrated with the country’s central government. Their primary grievance concerned a tax on the province’s main product, a type of dried and salted beef known as charque, that had led to the market being flooded with cheaper imported versions from Uruguay and Argentina.
As criticism of the government grew, the gauchos joined together under the leadership of Bento Gonçalves da Silva. Disparagingly referred to as farrapos or ‘ragamuffins’, due to their fringed leather clothing, the rebels seized control of the provincial capital of Porto Alegre on 20 September 1835. The local governor fled, while the rebels began demanding secession and independence.
As the uprising turned into a civil war, the rebels received assistance from the Uruguayan government of José Fructuoso Rivera who sought to form a political union with the separatist state. Attracted by the radical republicanism of the southern rebels, the Italian revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi also joined the fight and gained military experience that would later prove invaluable in the cause of Italian Unification.
The Ragamuffin War raged for ten years and caused the deaths of tens of thousands of people, making it both the longest war against the Imperial Brazilian government and also the second most costly in terms of casualties. The conflict was finally brought to an end with the signing of the Ponche Verde Treaty in 1845 that, along with granting a full amnesty for the rebels, introduced a 25% import tax on imported charque.

Transamazônica BR230
Muitos motociclistas reclamam das péssimas condições das estradas brasileiras, o que é legítimo, pois são quilômetros de buracos, remendos e falta de sinalização. No entanto, resolvi ir além e enfrentar a BR-230, conhecida como “Rodovia Fantasma”, tamanho é o grau de seu abandono e isolamento. Ciente das dificuldades, concentrei-me mais no fato de viajar com a equipe Tagino Adventure, necessariamente, na superação de cruzar a Floresta Amazônica de moto.
Roteriro
É rotineiro levar de seis a oito meses estudando um roteiro, os mapas e os pontos turísticos que visitaremos ao longo de uma viagem. E para essa aventura, mas como tivemos apoio do Tagino Adventure não tivemos problemas no planejamento.
O estudo para percorrer a BR-230 contou com informações de vários amigos, pois há muitos malucos que percorreram esta estrada e postaram seus dramas em filmes (muitas vezes, desesperadores). Por exemplo: um casal de colombianos que cometeu o grave erro de percorrer a 230 na época das chuvas, que se estendem de janeiro ao final de julho – os planos de cruzarem em quatro dias se estenderam por duas semanas e meia.
Cientes dessas agruras, seguimos viagem. A BR-230 é a única rodovia que liga Porto Velho a Santareml e foi construída ainda na década de 1960.
Conta a história que coronéis e barqueiros contrataram jagunços para destruir a rodovia, o que foi feito ao longo de dez anos. Na base de enxada, o asfalto foi arrancado; na base do fogo e da dinamite, pontes foram destruídas; e o resto a floresta tomou para si…
Além disso, às margens da BR-230 há inúmeros igarapés que transbordam – e quando as águas se vão, deixam bancos de areia e um cenário insólito, que nos faz pensar em como uma areia branca de praia surgiu no meio da Floresta Amazônica.
Passando de Porto Velho a Humaita com apoio da caminhonete, o asfalto sumiu e um longo trecho de barro compactado pelas máquinas do Exército surgiu. Por sorte não chovera nos últimos dias e a lama estava seca – porém, sem muita margem para velocidade acima dos 50 km/h, já que qualquer deslize literalmente nos levaria ao chão.
A BR-230 não é uma estrada para se fazer com uma moto como a 1200cc, e fomos com as XRE300 honda
Com esta certeza em mente, conseguimos percorrer, no primeiro dia, cerca de 400 km até o povoado de Apui , que fica às margens de um afluente do Rio Madeira, aonde a travessia (ao custo de R$ 10,00) é feita por meio de uma plataforma rebocada por uma embarcação que demora um pouco para ligar.
TOMBOS
Com pouco tempo de estrada – se é que assim podemos chamar uma faixa de asfalto com pouco mais de um metro de largura, além de repleta de buracos e lama
Porém, logo veio o primeiro tombo, ocasionado por baixa velocidade e uma roda dianteira que deslizou na lama.
TRAVESSIAS
Continuamos na estrada e cruzamos com pontes de madeiras nas mais assombrosas condições. Feitas de toras de árvores e tábuas, muitas apresentavam enormes buracos e pregos expostos. Sem contar aquelas que não tinham rampas de descida no lado oposto.
Ano passado as condições eram outras hoje esta bem mais fácil devido a restaurações da estrada pelo novo governo.

Many motorcyclists complain about the poor conditions of Brazilian roads, which is legitimate, as they are kilometers of holes, patches and lack of signs. However, I decided to go further and face the BR-230, known as the “Ghost Highway”, such is the degree of its abandonment and isolation. Aware of the difficulties, I concentrated more on traveling with the Tagino Adventure team, necessarily, on overcoming the Amazon rainforest by motorcycle.
Roteriro
It is routine to spend six to eight months studying a route, maps, and sights we will visit during a trip. And for this adventure, but as we had the support of Tagino Adventure we had no problems planning.
The study for the BR-230 featured information from several friends, as there are many freaks who have come along this road and posted their dramas in (often desperate) movies. For example, a Colombian couple who made the serious mistake of traveling through 230 during the rainy season, which extends from January to the end of July - plans to cross in four days stretched for two and a half weeks.
Aware of these hardships, we travel. The BR-230 is the only highway that connects Porto Velho to Santareml and was built in the 1960s.
