Maokong Gondola in Taipei (Video 9)
Opened on July 4, 2007, the Maokong Gondola operates between Taipei Zoo and Maokong. The 4.3 km (2.7 mi) line has four stations. Since March 30, 2010, 30 cabins have been retrofitted with 48mm thick glass bottoms, each weighing 213 kg. They operate with a service interval of three minutes. The capacity is limited to five persons per cabin. Crystal cabins, also called “Eyes of Maokong Gondola”, have their own waiting queue and a computer managed ticketing system, instructing passengers to enter the queue at a specified time. Currently, the price for taking a crystal cabin is NT$50, or the same as that of regular cabins. The cost of each cabin modification was NT$200,000.
The Zhinan Temple (指南宮), with its own station, is one of the most important of Taiwan's early Taoist temples. Its dedicated to main deity Lu Dongbin, one of the Eight Immortals, and various other deities.
There are numerous tea gardens in the Maokong and Muzha Tea Plantations area. Many tea makers have tasting rooms for sampling the latest teas, or will do so by appointment while the Taipei Tea Promotion Center offers introduction to tea picking, processing, brewing and free taste testing.

Yinhe Cave is an easy hike with 220 MASL and 940 meter from the trailhead. You can plan a multi-itineraries in this area since every connected trails is only short distance walk and it is well-marked so you have nothing to fear that you will lost in the jungle. You can start to hike either from Maokong or From Xindian. From Maokong you can start the trail up to Mt. Erjiaoge or Camphor trail. From Xindian, it start at Lingdingyu Road near the small temple where Shiela and I decided to start our adventure .
Legend has it that the rock above the waterfall has the footprints left Lu Xianzu, and the footprints on the rock of Jingmeixian. The cave formed by a concave mountain wall stands in the water hole. The oncoming breeze entrains the water and is quite cool.Though it only release small amount of water. Inside the cave is a small temple dedicated to Guanyin Bodhisattva. The ferns hanging between the walls of the cave set off the palace temple embedded in the cliff. This mountain is seems the home of some large species of spiders. Spider web welcome you as you starts to walk up to the trails. I saw Taiwan Golden Silk Spider in different colors spanned everywhere just along the trails. Beautiful and giant butterflies are also teasing you with their colorful wings as you enjoy the lush green of trees around. I recommend this trail to someone who had no much experience in hiking and had limited time and money to travel far beyond Taipei.
Erjiaoge shan 鵝角格山 trail was the hardest and steepy section of the path, there were a couple of ropes to pull yourself up but actually they would only be necessary if you were coming down in wet conditions, the climb really wasn’t that strenuous for people who had a lot experienced in hiking. But It was really fun to do with someone who is interested in nature. It is a condensed forest. The trees and plants along this trail is beauteous. It is also a little bit challenging to me, since I carried my 6 kls bag for 2 days and 2 night with little sleep since I start my 2N2D adventures with lots of tough walked. You can see the marker on the peak where you can view the Taipei City and Taipei 101.
How to get there:
From Taipei Station, take the Taipei MRT Xindian Line to Xindian Station, transfer to Xindian Passenger Green Line 12. You can ask the driver to drop you at Yinhedong trail entrance.
From Taipei Station, Take brown line train to Muzha or Taipei Zoo. Take cable car, or taxi up to Cable car Station. The Trailhead just located infront of Maokong Gondola Station beside Guan Ding Tea House. The trail will lead you to Mt. Erjiaoge or Camphor Trail to Greenery Cubes Cafe at Yinhe road and to Yinhedong and waterfall.

Taipei Vlog: Animals Taiwan, MaoKong, BiTan
May 18, 2013
We took full advantage of this Saturday by staying out the whole day walking the cutest dogs from Animals Taiwan, enjoying an amazing meal and delicious (albeit very strong!) tea on MaoKong Mountain, and taking a stroll across the BiTan bridge. If you love green tea and/or green scenery, we highly recommend a visit to MaoKong. The gondola ride, which departs from the Taipei Zoo MRT Station, is a fun way to get to the top and access all the tea houses. We really liked YaoYue Tea House, which is located at No.6, Lane 40, Section 3, ZhiNan Road in the WenShan District of MaoKong Mountain. It's open 24 hours!
