TRAVEL TAIPEI TAIWAN | Gongguan Street Food 公館美食 #3
In Taipei's #Gongguan district, you can really eat like a true local because you are immersed in one of the most prestige school zones in Taipei. With its close proximity to National Taiwan University and National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Gongguan is a must hit spot for foodies and tourists who are looking for some authentic Taiwanese eats.
Kevin and I have visited few of the most popular and traditional cheap eats in the area including #BubbleTea, steamed bun sandwiches, and dessert #ShavedIce. If you were hitting Taiwan, be sure to put them on your list of must tries!

Taipei City to begin charging for scooter parking in Gongguan
Starting from September 4, Taipei City is going to charge a parking fee for the 800 scooter parking spaces in the Gongguan Shopping Area, including on parts of Roosevelt Road and two other roads. Recently, the city''s transportation bureau has sent staff out to post announcements in the area, and encourage scooter riders to take public transportation instead. The scooter parking spaces around Taipei City’s Gongguan area are always jam packed. But recently yellow stickers have been appearing on each vehicle. The city’s Department of Transportation is leaving paper slips on scooters in Gongguan to inform their owners that from September 4 onwards, charges will apply to scooters parked around Roosevelt Road, Tingzhou Road and Siyuan Street. Some members of the public are quite taken aback by the sudden news. At weekends and holidays, crowds throng Gongguan. Even with 800 scooter parking spots in the area, it can be a challenge to find one free. In an attempt to improve the system’s efficiency, the authorities have decided to start charging fees. Some scooter riders are concerned about the impact the new measure will have on their budget. After the measure takes effect, it will become clearer whether or not it can successfully discourage scooter riding and promote the use of public transport.

National Taiwan University professor revisits April 6 Incident
In the lead-up to the anniversary of the April 6th Incident, National Taiwan University is renewing discussion about a topic that was once taboo. An NTU history professor gave a lecture on Wednesday revisiting the government crackdown on students on April 6, 1949. Speaking in a crowded lecture hall, the professor debunked myths and shed new light on a dark chapter of Taiwanese history. It’s a full house, so crowded that some students have nowhere to sit but the floor. NTU history professor Chen Tsui-lien is the speaker of the day, and her talk is about the April 6th Incident.Chen Tsui-lienNTU history professorOur understanding of the April 6th incident is relatively fragmented. Most will say it started in March 1949 when two students from NTU and NTNU were caught riding a single bicycle. In 1949, two students from NTU and NTNU were beaten by police for riding on one bicycle. Afterward, students of the two schools surrounded a police station in protest. The KMT administration believed that the protest was supported by Communist forces, and ordered the arrest of the student protesters.Chen Tsui-lienNTU history professorThey prepared to subdue the students. NTU’s president at the time, Fu Ssu-nien, told the police captain at the time, Peng Meng-chi, that he had one request. He said, if you take action against the students tonight, I ask that there be no bloodshed. If there is bloodshed, you will have me to contend with. Those words are often quoted and they made Fu a legend at NTU. But the professor said that there’s much in history that most people don’t know.Chen Tsui-lienNTU history professorPolice captain Chen Cheng had told President Fu outright. He said, “NTU has become a big base for Communists. How about we start from there?” The president immediately agreed, but he said, “I have three conditions.” “It must be quick, it must be thorough, and there must be no bloodshed.” He said he wanted the campus to be sorted out and stabilized. It was in fact President Fu who proposed the purging of the Communists. The NTU history professor shed new light on an old chapter of history, giving students in the audience new perspectives on their university’s past.

Taiwanese Pork Belly Sandwich at Lan Jia Gua Bao (藍家割包) - FAMOUS Taiwanese Street Food in Taipei!
►Download my free street food guide:
Lan Jia Gua Bao (藍家割包) is one of the most popular and most well known street food stalls in Taipei that serves gua bao, a Taiwanese pork belly sandwich. Sometimes known as a Taiwanese burger or hamburger, a gua bao consists of a piece of steamed Chinese bread (similar to the bread that’s used in any Chinese baozi steamed bun), filled with braised pork belly and in this case some braised greens, topped with peanuts and maybe a few extra small seasonings, and then wrapped into the bun and served.
Lan Jia Gua Bao (藍家割包) is located near Gongguan MRT station and just a short walk from National Taiwan University, and so when we arrived the entire street was just packed out full of students - most of whom I assume went to the nearby university. The stall is so popular that it, along with the Taiwanese bubble tea restaurant next door, combine to nearly shut down the entire corner of the street due to the amount of people.
So anyway, the line at Lan Jia Gua Bao (藍家割包) didn’t take too long, and it was soon my time to order one of these treasured Taiwanese pork belly sandwiches. She first took a piece of steamed bread, which was kept hot and fresh on a steamer before being used. Then filled in a combination of half fatty and half meaty braised pork, and then added in some braised mustard greens (I think), and finally sprinkled on some sweet crushed peanuts. She then folded it like a giant taco and served it to me. Along with my gua bao, I also tried their corn soup, another famous thing they serve at Lan Jia Gua Bao (藍家割包). I wasn’t thinking the corn soup would be all that great, but it was actually incredibly good - with a really pronounced corn flavor, and with tender chunks of pork within as well.
After getting our gua bao, we then went across the street to a place called Chen San Ding (陳三鼎黑糖粉圓專賣店), perhaps and even more famous street food stall, known for serving the famous Taiwanese boba bubble milk drink. I’m not really sure if it was really supposed to be tea or not, but this version tasted tea-less, only with the boba bubbles, which had a bit of a molasses brown sugar flavor to them, and creamy milk. Ying my wife really liked it, but it wasn’t my favorite.

From Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall MRT Station to National Station Taiwan University.
1. Board the MRT from CKMHS and get off at Gongguan Station.
2. Walk straight and in 5 minutes, you will reach NTU (the highest academy of Taiwan)
By the way, the ambiance of the institution is so welcoming and the students and people there are so friendly. In fact we met one elder. She was selling something like a hand-made key-chain and we happened to sit with her in a bench. We were surprised, she gave us three oranges and was talking to us in chinese and all we just replied was xi-xi. Haahaha! God bless that kind-hearted elder. One of the Meteor Garden scenes was also taken here.
From Taipei Main Station to Tamsui, Fisherman's Wharf.
Due to the cold weather, we went back to our hostel and I changed clothes. hahaha!
