Goodrich-Loomis Conservation Area: Cold Creek - January 2017 (Orland, ON)
While a January thaw was in progress during the time this video was shot, the landscape was still looking wintry in the Brighton area. The scenes are either along or near Cold Creek, near the entrance to Goodrich-Loomis Conservation Area.
This video was shot in mid-January, 2017, in eastern Northumberland County, Ontario.

Late November at Goodrich-Loomis Conservation Area (Orland, ON - 2015)
Peace and solitude, among wildlife and next to fast-flowing Cold Creek, can be found during a hike at Goodrich-Loomis Conservation Area. Goodrich-Loomis is locatead near the hamlet of Orland, north of Brighton, ON. The trail that was taken on the way to Cold Creek featured tracts of mostly dense forest, with occasional open spaces. This resulted in tunnel-like appearances in places where the woods gave way to a more open area.
In the opening scene, a bridge crosses a tributary of Cold Creek, giving access to the trail network. Some of the Junior Loop was taken to a trail running along the creek. Mixed upland forest dominates along the higher points, at the beginning of the trail network. Once lower ground is reached at Cold Creek, you enter a moist lowland forest, where cedars are abundant. Cold Creek has its source high in the rolling hills of Northumberland County, flowing to the east, emptying into the Trent River at Frankford. Squirrels can often be spotted there, including in this video, as one wandered into the shot.
The weather hovered around the freezing mark during my visit and the temperature was below 0 C during much of the previous night and morning. This made for some interesting icicles on some tree branches that hovered just above the creek. The ice formations added to some already beautiful scenery.
This video was shot during the last week of November, 2015.
Late Summer at Goodrich-Loomis Conservation Area (Orland, ON - September 2016)
The sounds of crickets, birds and Cold Creek could all be heard during my late summer Sunday afternoon visit to Goodrich-Loomis Conservation Area. The Summer of 2016 has been exceptionally dry and has taken its toll on Eastern Ontario, with some examples being visible in this video. At about 9:20, you will notice trees in the distance with reddish leaves. These are not examples of early fall colours. The leaves have been scorched from the dry weather. Between the 10:30 and 11:00 marks, you will notice a channel of Cold Creek is almost completely dried up.
Along the way, there were some scenes that contrasted with the signs of extremely dry weather. On both the hillsides and the floor of the cedar forest adjacent to Cold Creek, an abundance of ferns could be found. While this is often the case in a cedar forest, this type of greenery was still a welcome sight.
This video was shot north of Brighton, ON, in early September 2016.
Goodrich Loomis - Battle of the Mud
I had the chance to ride a (relatively) undiscovered trail in Ontario, called Goodrich Loomis. Set northwest of Trenton, Ontario (officially, it's in Castleton, Ontario), the trail features some great downhill sections, as well as some difficult technical sections that test your ability to stay on the bike.. Macpot and I hit it up in early spring, giving us an absolute Battle in the Mud!

Family Hike Through Long Sault Conservation Area
We took a family hike through Long Sault Conservation Area in the Oak Ridges Moraine today. The 2.9K trail took us a few hours and it was good fun. We found lots of birch bark, hoof fungus and fatwood. We saw squirrels and chipmunks and heard a turkey. We picked up garbage and climbed some downed trees. We also found a lost dinosaur and may have discovered the crater from the meteor that killed all his friends! We had three smiles and one sleeping bacpacgirl when we arrived back at the trail head. Life is good!

Hilton Falls Conservation Area
Hilton Falls is located within Hilton Falls Conservation Area, just west of the Greater Toronto Area and south of Acton, Ontario. The waterfall is located right alongside a side trail of the Bruce Trail. By following the Bruce Trail in, you do not have to pay a fee. Entering by the main entrance will result in a $6.50 per person charge. However, the Bruce Trail way will result in a 10-12km round trip hike.
Not the largest or most impressive of the Niagara Escarpment waterfalls, Hilton Falls is one of the most accessible and most photogenic. Access to both the crest and base is quite easy. It is possible to walk behind the veil of the plunge.
