Googs Track South Australia - 4wd Solo Touring
Googs Track in South Australia is located a short drive North of Ceduna. In September 2015 I completed a solo crossing in my Land Rover Defender over 4 days. Googs Track is a single vehicle track crossing 363 sand dunes from South to North. It passes through the Yumbarra Conservation Park and Yellabinna Regional Reserve.
The Track was constructed by John ‘Goog’ Denton between 1976 to 1979. It is 4wd only access due to the sandy dunes, not suitable for soft roaders. There are no facilities along its route so travellers much be totally self sufficient for fuel, food and water. A sand flag is highly recommended.
Highlights along the track are Googs Lake and Mount Finke, both providing basic campsites.
I completed the exploration from Ceduna ending in Glendambo, an approximate distance of 570km. Goog’s Track is a well known trail for 4WD and adventure enthusiasts.

Googs Track, South Australia
The Googs Track was built by 'Goog' Denton with the help of his son Dinger and friend Denis Beattie from June 1973 to August 1976. The track served as a short cut for farmers driving from pastoral lands to Ceduna. Today it allows 4WD enthusiasts to test their skills and enjoy the beautiful scenery and camping. The Googs has been referred as the mini Simpson Desert with over 300 sand dunes some as high as 25 meters.

Googs Track is considered a shortcut from the continent’s interior to the Australia’s south coast, and looks as though inspiration was taken from the Simpson Desert when it was created.

Goog's Track Run
The trip has been in the making ever since (once again) I saw a track (4x4) on a map going north from Ceduna, I still thought the Patrol could go anywhere, and my trip, in hindsight was not wise. My only backup was my nightly radio skeds with ‘Ed’ (Edward Mertens VK5EDM), very shaky ground indeed. Fortunately all went okay, however the slippery drive from Marree to Lyndhurst I shall never forget (sorry about the length of this bit) if I had run off the road I would still be there for some time.
This is the video that first gives a name to the Patrol, The Nissan ‘Dowdy’ (because its performance is nothing to rave about). It is also notable that I got lost twice, once, trying to find a track to Kingoonya, and second, trying to find the track across the top of Lake Torrens. On this trip I also wanted to travel the last bit (to Cook) of the railway I missed before from Kingoonya to the ‘big bridge’ on the Stuart Highway south of Glendambo. The ending of the films is now, being thought out much more, two endings were made, the ending where I disappear from the vision , then the Dowdy goes to leave the land as it was, this was a feature of just about all future endings (with perhaps the border bears disappearing after myself). The filming, at Goog’s Memorial, the use of both hands to push coins into the tree, just a little trick to keep the viewers on their toes.
From Andamooka I wanted to follow another dotted track on my map across the top of Lake Torrens to Farina. It was only a track and I thought it would be okay as it was on the map, little did I know it was only a station track. It was a very hot afternoon, after missing my turn off at the top of the lake, I saw a sign “Stuart Creek Opal Field”, I took this track (mistake), arriving at the mine site late in the afternoon. With all the tracks about I spent quite some time searching for the way onward, driving up a large hill, stopped and had a look around, decided travel to the north to pick up the easterly track. I was quite chuffed at finding my way forward through this maze of tracks. On dusk set up camp, had a wash, something to eat and ran out my wire for Ed I was just waiting for our sked, when a tray top Ute pulls up. “What the bloody hell do you think you’re doing here”, it would seem that the owner of the station was none too happy to see another trespasser on his land. “What makes you think that this is an open road, it’s not on the map”, “but it is!”. I proceeded to show him my currant map from the RAA. At this he calmed down a bit. It would seem he was having problems with the map people trying to get this track taken off the record. He had had a ‘gutful’ of travellers having soapy baths in the stock troughs and shooting up the water tanks, noticing the wire he remarked, “and what’s that for?”,”I use it as an antenna for my HF radio, I talk on a radio sked back home. I think at this point he saw me as meaning no harm; still he would not let me continue to follow the track though to Farina, and would prefer me to backtrack to the Borefield track, off his land. Leaving me to pack up, he left. It was at this point Ed (VK5EDM) called, I debated whether to answer him, but I did (my second mistake). I tried to sound normal, however Ed knew something was up straight away when I said “I could not hold the contact”, he wanted to know why, I tried to explain as quickly as I could, but this did not go down well with Ed. In the end I just explained “I must go clear, catch you later”. I rolled up my wire and travelled back the way I was told to by the land owner. Arriving back to the Borefield Track, I debated driving to Roxby Downs to telephone Ed, but it was quite a ways back down the track, so I pulled over and called Alice Springs base (VKS737), asking they make a ‘courtesy call’ (phone) to Ed, telling him to listen for my call on our sked frequency. This done Alice Springs base (VKS737) remarked it was the first time they had been used to arrange a Ham contact (he laughed). Upon relating to Ed that I was okay he said he had been a bit concerned, and was glad all was all over. Since this trip the station owner (Mulgaria Station) has opened up a track from Andamooka to Farina across his land as a ‘pay to travel’ track, I went back later (The Path of Kings) and travelled this track.
Goog's Track 2 - The Return
This trip was planned to give my brother, Jim, along with friends Malcolm Schluter and Ian Phillips assistance in negotiating Goog’s Track. A recent article in the Advertiser gave the location for the centre of South Australia; it is Latitude 30 degrees, 3 minutes and 30 seconds south, Longitude 135 degrees east, 45 minutes and 48 seconds east. Located on Mount Eba Station, Jim had arranged our visit with the owner on the property, Tossie Cornell, and was looking forwards to meeting up with her. After the visit to the centre of South Australia, Jim was keen to take Malcolm and Ian to have a look at the Gawler Ranges National Park. I left the others at Glendambo to make my own way back home.
This trip was a bit of a mixed bag for me, so use to camping on my own, now having Jim and his friends along. Jim found juggling his work commitments and that of Malcolm and Ian was no easy task. It was put down for the 22nd, so I, knowing what a big first day is on Goog’s, camped at Point Brown (near Ceduna) on the night of the 21st. So far, so good, I waited around, thinking they would have got away early, but no, They were to roll up after lunch.
This video was always going to be a struggle for me to make something watchable. You can tell by the way I babble on at the start (like a chook with its head cut off), no one wanted to be on camera or talk. After thinking “how can I make a film out of this footage” I left it a few weeks before I could face trying to make it ‘watchable’. The result is certainly no masterpiece, in fact I still call it another failure (that makes three so far). It is what it is, and will remain as a record of the events on the trip.
I wish also to give thanks to Malcolm Schluter and Ian Phillips who was to put me onto 'Cous Cous', a great product.

Goog's Track Adventure 2019 | Stephen and Queenie
We're Stephen and Queenie - an adventurous couple exploring Australia in a 4WD!
On this trip, we tackle Goog's Track in the South Australian outback. As we're from Melbourne, we had to get to the start of Goog's Track, so we show you some of the sites we visited along the way.
Then, from Ceduna, we head north to Loan Oak and the beginning of Goog's Track. Then, we traverse the 300+ sand dunes visiting the Goog and Dinger memorials, Goog's Lake and Mt Finke along the way.
