20th anniversary of the 'Crescent Head' shootings
New South Wales Police Commissioner, Andrew Scipione, has reflected on one of the force’s darkest days, the shooting murders of two officers at Crescent Head, on the mid north coast, 20 years ago today.
At the Crescent Head Police Memorial this morning, Mr Scipione has told a special remembrance ceremony the courage of Peter Addison and Robert Spears will never be forgotten.
At 12.35am on 9 July, 1995, the Kempsey-based senior constables were dispatched to Crescent Head to investigate a report of domestic violence.
As they arrived in Walker Street, the policemen came under fire from a drunken gunman, dressed in camouflage gear, hiding near a carport.
Senior Constables Addison and Spears, both aged 36, returned fire as they sought cover behind their four wheel drive.
As Senior Constable Addison tried to call for back-up on their police radio, Senior Constable Spears, a policeman for eight years, was fatally wounded.
In a desperate bid to seek help for his dying friend, Senior Constable Addison ran to a nearby house but it didn’t have a telephone.
As he tried to enter another property, still returning fire, the 14-year veteran was also shot dead by the gunman, who then turned his high-powered rifle on himself.
A month after their deaths, the pair was awarded the Police Force’s highest honour, the Commissioner’s Valour Award (VA)
A long list of dignitaries including former Police Commissioners, Tony Lauer and Neil Taylor, attended today’s ceremony to honour the officers for their bravery and dedication to duty.
Mr Scipione presented Senior Constable Addison’s widow, Liana, and Senior Constable Spears’s widow, Kathy, with National Police Service medals in recognition of their late husbands’ diligence to duty.
“Senior Constables, Peter Addison and Robert Spears, walked into an ambush,” the Commissioner said.
“Human instinct would demand you remove yourself from harm’s way in a situation like that, but not these brave officers,” he added.
“They knew they had to try to stop this gunman who could have gone on to kill or injure others.
“They stood their ground, defending themselves and their community from a cowardly assassin.
“Peter Addison was not prepared to leave his wounded friend and colleague...together they made the ultimate sacrifice and we will never forget them for it.”
The deaths led to major reforms to frontline policing in New South Wales, including the transition from revolvers to automatic pistols; ballistic vests; better radio communications and improved tactical training.
