Goolwa Beach - South Australia | Overland Trip
As overlanding enthusiasts we are very fortunate in South Australia to have some amazing beaches to drive on. We almost have the entire west coast to explore.
Even better is most of these beaches are only a couple of hours drive from Adelaide. A quick day beach driving overland trip is quite possible. Get a 4x4 and the adventure begins.
In this day trip to Goolwa beach we had the company of two very good friends. In under two hours from Adelaide we were lowering our tyre pressures, hitting the beach.
We had the place to our selves with only a handful of other 4x4 s around. We drove all the way to the Murray mouth. This is where the might Murray river meets the Southern Ocean. Shared a couple of cold beers, a bbq to fill our tummies, many yarns and was back home in time for dinner.

Driving on Goolwa Beach South Australia
Driving on Goolwa Beach in South Australia. Just over an hour from Adelaide in South Australia, you can experience driving on the sand at Goolwa Beach. Watch this video before you go if you are a beginner as there are many things you should know before you go. The entrance can be very soft. You should not attempt to enter the beach unless you have a four wheel drive or at the very least an all wheel drive vehicle. This video was filmed in an old Subaru Outback. I have seen a Winnebago bogged at the beach entrance. Not recommended.

Event on Goolwa Beach
Artist Andrew Baines assembled about 30 people attired in suits and pipi harvesting equipment to create an art installation as part of the UN Sustainable Goal program. Following this event on the beach a lunch was held at Signal Point Gallery in Goolwa. This video shows a quick summary of the day.

Goolwa is a historic river port on the Murray River near the Murray Mouth in South Australia, and joined by a bridge to Hindmarsh Island. The name Goolwa means elbow in Ngarrindjeri, the local Aboriginal language, and the area was known as The Elbow to the early settlers.
