Groggin to Goolwa part 1
We have the first of the opening guest appearances, which become another feature of all further videos. Haydn and Caroline Twining (although Haydn stayed behind the camera) are with me to open the video ‘Groggin to Goolwa’, Groggin refers to ‘Tom Groggin’ the cattle station and locality, as close as I could get to the head of the river Murray. I had to depend on the camera for the fade in, so this is the start of the film. Notice on this trip (in the outakes) as soon as we fade in Carolyn excuses herself and wonders if she can ask a question. I simply had to ‘go with the flow’ on this one. In the re-load I finally was able to cut this transgression out (but I still miss, ‘good morning, good morning, good morning’). Travelling to Goolwa, the last town on the Murray (for another long closing piece to camera), near to where the river meets the sea. Once again this trip was to follow the border of New South Wales with Victoria, that is, the river Murray as close as I could. This trip was also to give me the Idea of travelling down the Murray, this time from my boat, but that was to come much later.
Between the last trip, ‘The Grampians’ and this, the Dowdy’s motor was seized. This occurred after the crash repairers had repaired the broken driver’s door and it was looking good. I got Dave Worden (my mechanic) to give the Dowdy a big service, and replaced the thermostat after a radiator flush out and new coolant. I just got the car back (February 2003), and was on a local drive to Port Broughton. “Just before you go for a run, it would pay to just check the level in the radiator” Dave had told me. This I did. Halfway to Broughton the motor started to shudder then stop, near where the old Pirie road joins the new road. I lift the bonnet, steam belches from within, with lots of pinging and crackling noises. There, on the battery, is the radiator cap, I must have forgotten to put it back! Kevin came out after I contacted him via the radio, and towed the Dowdy back to Dunstal’s garage. Dave was not happy with me damaging ‘his car’. After a lot of trials and tribulations too numerous to elaborate here, the Dowdy motor was rebuilt and on the 17 March 2003 was back on the road again. Just enough time to run in before this trip away. Of the used old parts, I kept the six pistons, which I decided to ‘scatter’ far and wide over Australia. This was kind of random in the beginning, but, over time, developed into something much greater. Something I am still very proud to have done.
The awning (the commemorative Haydn Twining rain stopper), was purchased on the way though Adelaide, this was fitted at Haydn’s before I travelled onto ‘Buck’s Camp’ for the first night.
Another moment that time stood still, and all was good with the World was at sunset at ‘Native Dog Flat’ in the high country. I just had tea, had a wash, and sat down to watch the country go to sleep, it was magical.
The first piston was located at the head waters of the river Murray (almost the end of the ‘squiggly’ bit), at Tom Groggin. Located in New South Wales (the border is the southern bank), I could not think, at the time, of a more fitting place, S 36 32’ 24.7, E148 07’ 56.1. I must mention at this point the ten dollars placed in the piston, and subsequently thrown in the river was real.
In this video, I presented Dave (on camera) a plaque, for his dedication to rebuild the motor in the Dowdy. This was the hardest ‘pieces to camera’ I have ever done, and took well over an hour to get right (I wanted no edits). It is unfortunate only one of my outakes exist, as I kept filling up the camera tape, time and time again, rewinding back to try again. This outake has been included in the re-load; you can see I was to have one of my ‘emotional moments’ near the end. The plaque was given to Dave upon my return, on the back is the GPS location of where I read the plaque, and buried a piston at that location, in his honour. The location was chosen because it was the only camping spot ‘in common’ with the last trip (The Grampians), S34 39’ 14.9, E142 28’ 18.7. The fifty dollar note in Dave’s plaque is real.
At Waikerie, overlooking the Murray River, I began to think of boating down the Murray. I had read about Sturts exploits, and thought a trip to follow his path down the Murray from the junction of the Murrumbidgee (above Robinvale) down the sea. At this stage it remained a dream of mine, I just could not see a way to make it happen. At this lookout, on this trip, I first refer to the river as a ‘chain of ponds’. Little did I know what was to come?

Train Enthusiast's Video Diary 1996-01-27
On 27/01/1996, SteamRanger (South Australia) double-headed its steam locomotives Rx 207 and tank loco 251 to haul its Cockle Train between Goolwa and Victor Harbor. It was steam locomotive Rx 207's Testimonial trip following an extensive restoration by SteamRanger.
The Cockle Train travels along the oldest steel railed railway in Australia. The 30 minute journey joins Goolwa (South Australia) near the mouth of the mighty River Murray to the bustling tourist centre of Victor Harbor (South Australia). Between Victor Harbor and Port Elliot you will travel along some of the most picturesque coastal scenery on the Fleurieu Peninsula, with nothing separating you from the beach below and a perfect view of the Southern Ocean - in winter the home of Southern Right Whale.
Why is this icon journey called the Cockle Train? In early days of settlement the local residents would take a horse drawn train to Goolwa to collect Cockles from the sandy beaches near the Murray mouth. It was a great day's outing and thus gained its name.
