Gordes is in the Vaucluse département in France, in Provence. Lubéron refers to some mountain ridges in the area.
Gordes seems to be where Americans go to spend money! It was interesting, hearing so much American English spoken here. Dramatic and quite James Bondian-glamorous, during high Summer season, prices are very high indeed here, and there is a five star hotel and spa.
Many of the villages in this region were perched on impossible mounts and cliffs and fortified. You can see the castle, and the Chapel of the White Penitents in this clip as we drove to our rented stone hut over the gorge via the center of the village. We did not care for the weekly town market in Gordes, finding many things overpriced, but we were thrillled with Coustellet, down below on flatter, more open lands, where there was an absolutely excellent Monday morning market, with a tiny Tuesday evening version there. Prices were very low, everything was local, and it wasn't just food sold on Sunday in Coustellet. We also found the Super U supermarket there to have very good prices, and the gas station was the best-priced in the entire region. Coustellet is only about 8 km from Gordes.
Since our visit was in September, we paid only about half what would normally be charged for our rental of the furnished stone hut, which has a private pool, deck, balcony and a couple of adjacent private gardens. I am fairly disabled but was easily capable of walking into the village center one afternoon to do some shopping. It was very close by.
Many people try to come here for a few weeks or even a whole season if they can manage that. It is extremely restful and if you want to do sports or sightsee, you have all of that you could likely want right nearby. The roads are tiny and twisting, so you have to pay attention.
You aren't very connected with the outside world here. It's hard to be online. People still read newspapers and talk. Even regular television, radio and portable phone service may not work for you in a lot of France, which is largely rural.
By renting a self-catering place and cooking or grilling at home a lot, you do save quite a bit. In Gordes, if you want to dine out or sit at a café, you certainly can, and the fare is fantastic. The locally grown products are so delicious and healthful, however, we were happy to do for ourselves most of the time.
We had olive and fig trees in the gardens, and the local products include honey, lavender, herbs, cheeses, terrific wines, fruits, nuts, soaps, olive oil, meats, vegetables, quite a bit of seafood coming from Marseille which is not far away, and there is plenty of wildlife here. If you don't like bugs, lizards or butterflies, however, this place might not be for you! (The bugs were shy but very present among all the stones, caves and grottoes.)
We bought a parking permit for the week for ten euros and always found a space in the lot near the gendermarie, about 500 yards from the hut. There was also a point there for RVs and campers to recharge, get water and empty their waste. We experienced some of the mistral seasonal winds, which can be destructive. Many people put large rocks on their roofs to keep the tiles from blowing away. I spoke to several local women and they said the weather is usually pretty mild, however. A lady who ran a local shop of regional products had lived in Paris for years and loved Gordes, but she was quick to point out to me that she had been lucky in finding a low-cost residence and the work she set up right away. She also said that people usually do not last long in the region, quickly being lured into paying insane prices for real estate which is unsustainable. We think we saw more luxury automobiles in this village than in anywhere else in France we've ever been!

Gordes
Acclaimed as the best market in the region. Also, the resistance was organized in this area in 1942, and with the establishment of the Vichy government many young people were hidden from conscription and for resistance training. In 1944 they were infiltrated, tortured, and shot. 20 people from Gordes were killed. After the landing of the Allies in Provence, they rebounded, but were then bombed by the Nazis. Three days later they re-took the area, and all of Vaucluse was liberated.

Very Quick View of Roussillon and Gordes, France
I think this clip may have been truncated, and I apologize. We were offline for a couple of weeks and I was trying to keep vacation clips short and on-target for memory purposes.
Roussillon is in the Lubéron region of Provence, a Southern region of France in the Vaucluse département. Montventoux is a bald mountaintop nearby and its limestone cap appears to be snowy even in Summer. Its name is Celtic in origin (!) and refers to the wind here, which is the mistral. It can be very strong and destructive. I've experienced worse winds in my day, but this one ... well, let's just say the novelty wears off after about 15 seconds!
The many cliffs and gorges here have a red clay important in the production of ochre for pigments. Unfortunately, as synthetic pigments fell into favor, business declined here. Also, excellent almonds come from here but the market was kind of crushed in the '60s by the California USA dried fruit and almond producers. Locals wisely switched their marketing strategy to wines -- this region produces some really fine ones!
This is a Mediterranean climate and is usually sunny, warm and dry. Samuel Beckett lived in Roussillon for quite awhile and his house is still there. Gordes, shown briefly on this clip in the distance about 10 km away, is a very posh ancient village with five star features, and we rented a house there for a week, slightly late in the season, enjoying the great weather but paying a lot less. My spouse liked Roussillon so much, he came back here two more times this day! Since it's not far from Gordes, he wanted to do some hiking and had seen a special postcard of Lacoste, domain of the family of Le Marquis de Sade, he wanted to buy for his collection. I said, have at it, honey! I cooked and lounged by our private pool. It was glorious, but now I am back in Paris, nursing a cold and working. Ugh.

Oh, I am warning you -- Roussillon contains many wonderful shops. You can take a container to the bakery and fill it up with fresh local olive oil, and buy rare fruit confit, a wonderful cookie made of pistachios and pine nuts, almonds dredged in nougat and chocolate ... honey ... you have been warned! You can also buy wonderful ceramics and stone items made with the local ochre. This is a prime tourist spot. There is a gorgeous cemetery, clean public toilets, and an incredible, open sky. And yes, a lot of places you could fall and break your neck!! :)
Chick Shopping Fun in Gordes, France
I am not usually the shopping type, but hey, we were on vacation! Gordes is a charming, chic village perched on a mount, cliffs and a gorge in Lubéron, a region of Provence, in the Vaucluse département of France. It is just a bit inland from the Mediterranean and is very sunny and dry.
We rented a cute stone house for a week and I loved it. You can take it easy here or sightsee and do sports a lot, as you please. I loved the village of Coustellet not far off because its market was way better than the little weekly one in Gordes, and prices were far more reasonable. I have quite a few clips up of this place on this channel and my other one, CUTECATFAITH, and over on Dailymotion under LisaFalour.
You can certainly buy fashion, jewelry, art and real estate in this town, but I was just out for some comestibles this time!
The bill came to about 38 euros for this haul, if I remember correctly. That may seem like a lot, but we are enjoying the stuff still and one of those packs of lavender is about to be sent to a nice friend in the States! It is used here a lot, set out on a dish or put in a packet in a drawer in France. The fragrance smells clean to the French. Why not?
