Gore Bay is a beautiful bay near Cheviot, North Canterbury. It is a small place that retains a charm that has been lost in other small New Zealand, coastal communities.
Gore Bay has a basic, well maintained and functional camping ground that is very relaxed and friendly.
A perfect place to take the family camping.
Gore Bay is safe for swimming, boogie boarding and surfing, and has plenty of rock pools and bays to explore.

Gore Bay is a coastal settlement near Cheviot, New Zealand.
It has a surfing beach with summer beach houses and 14 permanent residents. There are two local camping grounds, each with beach access and business. It is a popular New Year's Eve venue. Of note is Cathedral Gully, a spectacular weathered clay canyon.
The cottage at 60 Moody Street that once belonged to Mrs. Eliza Robinson, wife of local runholder William 'Ready Money' Robinson, is registered by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust as a Category II structure, with registration number 1769.

13 Cheviot to Gore Bay 2016 on a Boom Mustang
Cheviot is a small rural community, approximately 120km north of Christchurch, New Zealand. Located along State Highway One, Cheviot is a popular place to stop enroute from Christchurch to Kaikoura, or for those travellers heading further north to Blenheim and Picton.
Literally in the middle of the Cheviot township, there is a Tourist Route turn off that heads east to the coast, through to a sleepy settlement - Gore Bay. Here the traveller will find a sandy white beach safe for swimming.
The road features short straight lines through the country side mixed in with sweeping curves, a few hairpin bends, a steep climb to the ridge with vistas including white cliffs, overhanging trees and the meandering Hurunui River.
Highlights include a walk along Gore Bay, a visit to the eroded sandstone Cathedral Cliffs, and the discovery of an old suspension bridge over the Hurunui River at Blythe Road.

The arrival of caravans at Gore Bay is as sure a sign that summer’s on its way as new lambs and daffodils.
Cheviot NZ is an ideal weekend break – just far enough out of the city to warrant packing the car, and not so far that you’re chewing into valuable holiday time behind the wheel.
Once a small rural service town and pie stop, Cheviot has shaken off its chrysalis to become a fully fledged weekend destination with eclectic shops, an astounding number of cafes, a diverse coastline and impressive rivers - all framed by rolling green farmland and a mountain backdrop.
Whether you’re camping, staying in one of the town’s three motels or renting a holiday home at Gore Bay, eating out is a must, and the lunch menus at Two Rivers café, The Paddock or The Mainline Station, a few minutes south of Cheviot, will fit the bill. Magpie’s Rest and Cheviot’s Tearooms complete the culinary picture, along with the award winning Harris Meat butchery and delicatessen. Dinner is served at the Cheviot Trust Hotel every night of the week.
A stroll down Cheviot’s tree-lined main street takes in two art galleries, both exhibiting New Zealand artists as well as local and imported jewellery, a stylish gift and home ware store, and the Cheviot Museum, a small building housing a large collection of artefacts from Cheviot’s early days.
Pack the walking shoes to explore the wooded Cheviot Hills Reserve’s new Ready Money trail, or tackle some of the tracks at Gore Bay. For the cyclists, there are excellent rides for both mountain and road bikes – and with a bit of route planning, you can tailor your ride to end with coffee and cake back in town. There’s also a 9 hole golf course on the outskirts of town.
Both Hurunui and Waiau rivers meet the sea near Cheviot NZ, providing fishing and jet boating enthusiasts with plenty of action. The sea temperatures may still be cold but that doesn’t stop surfers from catching waves at Gore Bay. Those who prefer dry land have Gore Bay’s fossil rich rocks, Manuka Bay and Nape Nape to explore.
