A SINZE ENTERTAINMENT VISUAL
DLR: Bank to Canary Wharf
In this video, we make a southbound journey on a B92 Stock Docklands Light Railway train from Bank to Canary Wharf calling at all stations (Shadwell, Limehouse, Westferry, West India Quay and Canary Wharf).
Bank is currently the westernmost terminus of the DLR, connecting up with the London Underground Central, Northern and Waterloo & City Line services directly and also the District and Circle Line services at Monument station via an underground walkway. It is one of only four underground stations on the DLR network along with Island Gardens, Cutty Sark and Woolwich Arsenal. Between Bank and Limehouse, the DLR runs parallel with the c2c service that runs into Fenchurch Street station with the c2c continuing eastbound towards Southend while the DLR branches southbound towards Lewisham and southeast to Beckton.
Poplar is a major station on the DLR as it marks the meeting point for customers to change trains that do not directly run to their intended destination. In our case, we skip Poplar courtesy of a bypass branch that enables the DLR to access Canary Wharf directly from Bank.
The DLR is due to receive a few upgrades, with new trains projected to enter service in 2022 in order to increase capacity and reliability. An order of 43 three-car units has been placed, 33 of which will replace the current B90/B92/B2K Stock trains and the other 10 to increase the size of the DLR fleet. These new trains will feature air conditioning with climate control, on board mobile phone charging points and walk-through carriages. It is also going to be extended eastbound to Thamesmead, branching off from Gallion's Reach, to serve the housing redevelopment projects in the area with options to extend northbound to Barking.
The DLR has been the subject of debate for many years now, with several extensions proposed. The most notable one being the Dagenham Dock extension which, like the approved extension to Thamesmead, would branch off from Gallion's Reach but head northbound to Dagenham Dock station via Beckton Riverside, Creekmouth, Goresbrook and Barking Riverside.
There have also been proposals to extend the DLR to St Pancras via Euston in order to relieve congestion on the existing London Underground services that currently serve these stations and also to offer another metro line to serve the upcoming HS2 service from Euston to Manchester as well as linking up HS2 with HS1. In my opinion, this would be a good idea with or without HS2 as any method of relieving congestion will always have a purpose.
Other proposals include extending the DLR westbound to Victoria via Charing Cross, utilising the disused Jubilee Line platforms, and southbound extensions from Lewisham to Catford. This, however, would prove problematic due to the positioning of Lewisham DLR station.

The film quality is poor, this was originally filmed on a Kodak 8mm cine camera, in 1960 or 61. The first, and very poor quality, bit is a very rare film of parachute training at RAF Hornchurch. The Territorial Army used a tethered barrage balloon, with a cage underneath, for parachute training. This was filmed from the back garden of 23 Guysfield Close, Rainham, Essex England, where the rest of the film shows a young 'Ade and Aud' playing in the garden.
The 'lady' is Marguerite Audrey Smith (Nee Stephens), their mum. Film originally shot by Alfred James Smith, schoolteacher at Goresbrook Secondary Modern School, Dagenham.
