Hocking Hills State Park, Logan Ohio - Grandma Gatewood Trail - 10-18-12
At Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio, the North Country Trail, Buckeye Trail, and the American Discovery Trail coincide and a six-mile section is designated as the Grandma Gatewood Trail. It connects Old Man's Cave to Cedar Falls to Ash Cave. The Appalachian Trail Museum includes information about Grandma Gatewood in its exhibits and in June 2012, she was inducted into the Appalachian Trail Hall of Fame.
Emma Rowena Gatewood, better known as Grandma Gatewood (October 25, 1887--June 4, 1973), was an extreme hiker and ultra-light hiking pioneer who was the first woman to hike the 2,168-mile (3,489 km) Appalachian Trail from Mount Oglethorpe in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine solo, and in one season.
Family life:
Gatewood was born in Guyan Township, Gallia County, Ohio. She was a farmer's wife who had eleven children and 24 grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild living at the time of her death at 85.
Hiking:
Gatewood hiked the Appalachian Trail in 1955 at the age of 67, wearing Keds sneakers and carrying an army blanket, a raincoat, and a plastic shower curtain which she carried in a homemade bag slung over one shoulder, thus making her a pioneer of Ultralight backpacking. Local newspapers picked up on her story, leading to a profile in Sports Illustrated when she had reached Connecticut and an appearance on the Today Show.
She had read about it in a National Geographic Magazine. I thought it would be a nice lark, she said, adding It wasn't. Another time she complained For some fool reason, they always lead you right up over the biggest rock to the top of the biggest mountain they can find.
She hiked it again in 1960 and then again at age 75 in 1963, making her the first person to hike the trail three times (though her final hike was completed in sections).[2] She was also credited with being the oldest female thru-hiker by the Appalachian Trail Conference until 2007.
In addition, she walked 2,000 miles (3,200 km) of the Oregon Trail from Independence, Missouri, to Portland, Oregon, averaging 22 miles (35 km) a day. She traveled to every state of the continental United States.
In 1970, at age 83, while visiting Appalachian Outfitters in Oakton, Virginia she was asked what she thought about the latest lightweight backpacking gear. Emma advised: Make a rain cape, and an over the shoulder sling bag, and buy a sturdy pair of Keds tennis shoes. Stop at local groceries and pick up Vienna sausages... most everything else to eat you can find beside the trail... and by the way those wild onions are not called Ramps... they are Rampians ... a ramp is an inclined plane.
Gatewood was a life member of the National Campers and Hikers Association and the Roanoke Appalachian Trail Club. She was Director Emeritus and a lifetime member of the Buckeye Trail Association.

Hiking the Plateau Trail | Cuyahoga Valley National Park, OH
The 4.4 mile Plateau Trail, located in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, provides a great place to take in the scenery of the western section of the Cuyahoga Valley. The trail loops around Sylvan Pond (accessible by the nearby Oak Hill Trail), taking hikers through a dense forest made up of a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees, along the banks of Meadowedge and Chestnut Ponds, and along the steep cliffs of the valley.
Although the trail has little change in elevation, the terrain has frequent stretches of exposed roots, hand has been rated by the National Parks Service as moderately strenuous. The ponds, deep ravines, and beautiful forest make the effort well worth it, however.
The Plateau trail offers a nice hike in every season, it is arguably the best trail in the Cuyahoga Valley to hike during the Fall, just at the leaves hit their peak.

Hiking Hocking Hills - Some things never change
We LOVE hiking in Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio! The trails are diverse and the scenery is fun and stimulating. They're accessible year round and offer amazing photo ops.
In this video we visited Old Man's Cave, Devils Pool, the Lower Falls, Cedar Falls, Whispering Cave and many more areas. We think that it provides a fairly good overview of what to expect on these trails while hiking on a weekend day in the summer. We found the trails very heavily trafficked in the gorge area - so the Buckeye Trail, Upper Falls Loop Trail, to the Old Man's Cave area. It started to thin out, yet still saw plenty of people, once we got to the Hemlock Bridge Trail, Cedar Falls Trail with the Gorge Overlook Trail being the least populated.
On a personal note, it had been five years since we hiked these trails with our daughter Stephanie. She had so much fun bounding over rocks, crawling into caves, wading into the water, and exploring nature. We pulled ourselves together and honored her spirit by retracing our adventure with her. Fortunately we weren't officially lost like we were last time, but was challenged a bit more than we expected.

Starting my climb to the top of The Rim Trail at Conkles Hollow in Hocking Hills Ohio 3-16-2013
When you first walk into the Hollow you will see two set of steps, one set on your left go up at incline and wind all the way up to The Rim Trail, the other set of steps on the right (that I took) go up at a gradual and very steep incline. I know you have heard the saying I have to stop and catch my breath? Well! I had to stop and let mine catch up with me. LOL!!! Midway to the top (you think) the steps end and then the rest of the trail winds up to the top with what I guess is a tie-line to help along the way. I have a video of that part of the trail also that I will be uploading.

Thanks for Watching! Today my friend Alyssa and I went on a hike. We got lost and confused a few times but we made it out alive. We went to the Niagara Gorge right on the border between the US and Canada. This wasn't the best quality, but its a great memory to have! Hope to see you back here again!

Spruce Pond to Jones Hill: The Best of the North Country Trail
Watch the REDO of this 2009 video featuring the original CNY Hiking dog, Scrappy. This popular hike in Onondaga County features the North Country Trail from Spruce Pond to the spectacular views from the hang glider overlook on Jones Hill. In this redo of the video, we've taken out the music and have left the sounds of the trail for the music on this video. Watch the owl that swoops in at the overlook toward the end of the video.

Day-Tripping Hawks Nest State Park - West Virginia
Nestled in the heart of whitewater rafting country, Hawks Nest State Park is a 270-acre recreational area with a nature museum, aerial tramway, jetboat rides, hiking trails and one of the most challenging whitewater boating waterways in the nation. Its 31-room lodge offers luxurious rooms, dining and spacious conference and meeting facilities. Located near Ansted in Fayette County, about 10 miles north of the New River Gorge Bridge, Hawks Nest is known for its scenic overlook, which provides a bird’s eye view of the rugged New River Gorge National River below.
Long before Hawks Nest became a state park, the area was a nesting ground for numerous osprey and the site of a trail used by Native Americans. In the late 1800s, the portion of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway running through the gorge was completed, and scattered most of the birds inhabiting Hawks Nest’s cliffs. In 1934, the Hawks Nest Dam and lake were completed. At the time, they were used to generate hydroelectricity for the growing manufacturing industry and for flood control.
In 1935, the state of West Virginia purchased much of the property that is now Hawks Nest. In 1963, the Department of Natural Resources took control of the property and built the park lodge and other facilities that now draw visitors from nearly every state, to enjoy the scenic views of the New River Gorge.
