Gorgopotamos Phthiotis, Greece| Crossing historic bridge
Gorgopotamos (Greek: Γοργοπόταμος) is a village and a former municipality in Phthiotis, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform, it is part of the municipality Lamia, of which it is a municipal unit.[2] The municipal unit has an area of 157.300 km2.[3] It is located 8 km southwest of Lamia and 34 km north of Amfissa. In 2011 its population was 453 for the village and 3,374 for the municipal unit. The seat of the municipality was in Moschochori. It is named after the river Gorgopotamos which flows through the municipal unit (its name means in Greek the rushing river). The Oiti mountains, a national park, lie to the southwest. The northeastern part of the municipal unit lies in the wide and flat Spercheios valley. The municipal unit of Gorgopotamos borders Lamia to the north and Phocis to the southwest.
The Gorgopotamos Bridge is one of the most famous bridges in Greece. It crosses Gorgopotamos and connects Bralo with Lamia while it carries the Athens-Thessaloniki railway line. The bridge is well known for its role in the National Resistance, as it was destroyed on 25 November 1942 in the battle of Gorgopotamos by Greek rebels from the EDES and ELAS organizations, co-operating under British agents, mainly against Italian and German forces

Operation Harling, known as the Battle of Gorgopotamos (Greek: Μάχη του Γοργοποτάμου) in Greece, was a World War II mission by the British Special Operations Executive (SOE), in cooperation with the Greek Resistance groups EDES and ELAS, which destroyed the heavily guarded Gorgopotamos viaduct in Central Greece on 25 November 1942. This was one of the first major sabotage acts in Axis-occupied Europe, and the beginning of a permanent British involvement with the Greek Resistance.
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos.

The Gorgopotamos bridge, built in 1905, put the Gorgopotamos village on the map for the strategic purpose the bridge played during World War II.The name of Gorgopotamos became famous during World War II, when 150 Greek partisans, blew up the railroad bridge over the Gorgopotamos river on November 25, 1942 as part of Operation Harling and cut off the enemy-controlled route between Thessaloniki and Athens. The blast ruined two of the six piers of the bridge. In an act of reprisals, the German occupation forces executed 16 Greek locals. The area around the bridge has been designated a national monument.

However, the special part of the video begins at 1:40 with special transfer train 93500 with 4 MLW (450 and 500 series), 1 AEG power car and a MAN2000 Dmu. After leaving Papadia viaduct to catch the train at Karia area we film a freight train from Thessaloniki to Athens which we catch at Gorgopotamos viaduct and Amfiklia level crossing too. Enjoy the sound and the scenery with some...not so common stuff.

ADtranz/Bombardier locomotives on ICity train to and from Thessaloniki and AEG Dmu on local train from/to Lianokladi. The sound of the metal when the locomotive enters the bridge is a part of the ''reward'' of train-spotting at this bridge.

Trains at Trachina Pass, Central Fthiotis - Summer 2013.
Trachina Pass is a rail pass at central Fthiotis, near Lamia. The rough rocky landscape and the steep clif creates a beautiful and breathtaking scene. It starts at the end of Asopos Gorge, at Iraklia Bridge (205km of main line) and ends at Arpinis bridge - a small metal bridge at 209km. Highlight spots are the waterfall's bridge and the two bridges of Iraklia...however all the pass has something special to offer to every train-spotter (videographer or photographer) that attempts to capture it.
