Driving in Mongolia – Gorkhi-Terelj National Park | Drivelapse Part I
Our drive from Gorkhi-Terelj National Park back to UlaanBaatar, capital of Mongolia. We drive past the famous Turtle Rock, on some treacherously pot-holed dirt roads up the mountain, and through a quick but thunderous torrent of rain. I'm driving my mother-in-law's Nissan Qashqai, and so I am a little more cautious than approximately everyone else on the road. This is Part I.
In the next video, we'll drive into the city of Ulaanbaatar, through some hilariously gridlocked traffic.

Terelj National Park, Mongolia
On Day 9 in Mongolia, we started of in the central city at Sukhbataar square before heading east to the Chinggis Khan statue complex. We continued further to the Terelj National Park with stops at the Turtle Rock and the monastery surrounded by a colourful autumn scene. Not long after it was time for our final ''Goodbyes' and final moments in this beautiful country.

As part of our Trans Siberian train trip from London to Beijing, Mongolia was our 4th stop.
We experienced a bit of nomadic culture and enjoyed a nights stay in a Ger in the beautiful Terelj National park, one of the biggest forest areas near Ulan bator and an hours drive from the centre.

Gorkhi-Terelj National Park is one of the national parks of Mongolia.
A small southern portion of the park is developed for tourists, with restaurants, souvenir shops, horses and camels for rent, and tourist ger camps, many of them run by the Juulchin corporation, the former state tourism company. However, most of the park is undeveloped and difficult to access. Attractions include Khagiin Khar Lake, a 20 meter deep glacial lake 80 km upstream from the tourist camps, and Yestii Hot Water Springs, natural hot springs 18 km further upstream. The park also has a Buddhist monastery that is open to visitors. Park wildlife includes brown bears and over 250 species of birds. The Tuul River flows through the park.
The park has many rock formations for rock climbers, and includes two famous formations named for things they resemble: Turtle Rock and the Old Man Reading a Book.
Many Westerners were introduced to Gorkhi-Terelj National Park when the CBS reality television program The Amazing Race visited the park in the second episode of its tenth season.
Lying in the valley of the Terelj River 80 km northeast of Ulaanbaatar, Terelj national park has long been a holiday resort for people from the capital and short – stay tourists.
It is one of the most visited areas in Mongolia due to its magnificient scenery and its proximity to Ulaanbaatar. There are great opportunities for hiking, rock climbing, simming, rafting, riding and bird watching. In winter frozen rivers provide skating and snow-covered valleys are ideal for cross- country skiing. Terelj is picturesque place of high cliffs of granite, rivers and forests. It is located in Khan Khenti Park.
Precious stones, cloudy crystals and pure crystals were mined more than a hundred years ago in this area. A chunk of cloudy crystal of 7.5 tons of weight was founded there in 1960. 2864 sqare kilometers area of Gorkhi Terelj was taken to state protection in 1993. We can see here distinctive rock formation resembling a giant turtle and a person reading a book etc. The Terelj River flows through Terelj Nationl Park. This river takes its sources from Asralt Khaikhan mountain of Khentii mountain range and its rapid stream after 70 km flows in to the Tuul River.

Gorkhi-Terelj National Park is one of the national parks of Mongolia. The Terelj tourist zone has a number of tourist camps. It is connected with Ulan Bator by a paved road. Trip to Gorkhi-Terelj National Park in Mongolia
Gorkhi-Terelj is one of Mongolia’s national parks, 55 km north east from Ulaanbaatar city. Unlike the nearby steppes, it has mountains and trees, including large stands of tamaracks that turn golden in the fall. The park has a magnificent alpine landscape, many rock formations for rock climbers, and includes a famous formations named Turtle Rock (Melkhii Khad) for the shape it resembles.
Well known as sightseeing destination, gigantesque rock made and carved into a turtle by only wind and rain water, which is just off the main road into the park. Many people have called it «the Switzerland of Mongolia»; it is and excellent place for horse or camel riding, hiking inside the rock and nearby.
The legend states that the King Galdanboshigt hid all his treasures during the war with Manchu Troops in 1600. Since then it’s worshiped by the locals as the treasure rock bringing wealth to those who visit.
One of the 'must go' attraction while you are at the Terelj National Park - ideally take a horse ride to go to Aryabal Meditation Temple and enjoy the ride and scenery from the top.

The Mongolian yurt, or ger as it is known in Mongolia itself, has been used for thousands of years by the nomads of Central Asia and is still a common sight in many countries in the region.
Yurts (gers) are designed to be easy to take apart, transport, and reconstruct. Despite this portability, they are warm enough to keep the coldest winter temperatures at bay and strong enough to withstand strong winds and the demands of a whole family.
The yurt (ger) is a circular structure built using a wooden, accordion frame that can be easily taken down, made compact for carrying, and reassembled.

This was our first stop on our grand road trip in Mongolia. We were so excited to be finally on the road and it was a pretty incredible feeling to be with the great Mongolian outdoors for the next 11 days. I don't think I've ever done such a long camping trip in my life, ever. Even in the military, the field camps at most lasted 2-3 days. So this is a very new experience for me. I hope you'll enjoy this road trip as much as we did.

The Park is situated at 80Km. north east of Ulaan Baatar, and is a very popular area both with the locals on a week end and with foreign tourists. It took us nearly two hours to drive from the capital as the roads were pretty bad. The park lies at 1600 metres high and offers great opportunities for hiking, horse-riding, rafting and rock climbing. The parks is over 1.2 million acres large. The landscape is looking a little bit like the alps. It is a national park which started to developed in the 1960's and officially was classified as a National Park in 1994. It is almost uninhabited by humans, only by a few nomads and farmers. Inside the park, there are ranges of protected animals such as birds (250 species), moose, and bears. As it become developed for tourism, some of the Ger camps have concrete car parks and electricity. Camps are not at the same place depending of the season, there are summer camps, and winter camps which are open mostly all year long.
