Hakodate 函館市 is a city and port located in Oshima Subprefecture, Hokkaido, Japan. It is the capital city of Oshima Subprefecture. The city is now the third biggest in Hokkaido after Sapporo and Asahikawa.
Goryōkaku 五稜郭 is a star fort in the Japanese city of Hakodate on the island of Hokkaido. It was the main fortress of the short-lived Republic of Ezo. The Goryokaku is a star-shaped fort that has been designated as a special historic site. The Goryokaku Tower Observatory commands a panoramic view of the fort.
Today, Goryōkaku is a park. It has been declared a Special Historical Site and is home to the Hakodate city museum.

Finally made my virgin trip to the northern territory of Japan - Hokkaido! First stop, Hakodate and Goryokaku Park to see the famous Star Fortress surrounded by fluffy pink cherry blossoms!
After that, I took a ropeway up to Mt. Hakodate to witness the top three most beautiful night views in Hokkaido.

Hakodate (函館市 Hakodate-shi) is a city and port located in Oshima Subprefecture, Hokkaido, Japan. It is the capital city of Oshima Subprefecture.
As of July 31, 2011, the city has an estimated population of 279,851 with 143,221 households, and a population density of 412.83 persons per km2 (1,069.2 persons per sq. mi.). The total area is 677.77 km2 (261.69 sq mi). The city is now the third biggest in Hokkaido after Sapporo and Asahikawa.

The Goryokaku is a western-style fort completed almost 150 years ago. A magnificent panoramic view of the entire star-shaped estate and surrounding moat unveils itself to visitors from the observation platform of the 107-meter Goryokaku Tower, which stands adjacent to the fort. The moat is surrounded by some 1,600 cherry trees, making the Goryokaku one of Hokkaido's top cherry blossom viewing spots in springtime. In summer the moat is fringed with lush greenery, which turns into a blazing scene of crimson foliage in the fall that is then blanketed with snow in the winter, creating an extremely beautiful vista for all seasons.
五棱郭是一座建于150年前的西洋式城郭。登上伫立一旁107米高的五棱郭塔，星形护城河微波涟漪，尽收眼底。约有1600株樱花树矗立在护城河边。到了春季，这里就成为北海道观赏樱花的最佳景点之一。夏季里绿树成茵，秋季里红叶纷纷，而到了冬季，护城河仿佛雕刻在雪中的五角星，银装素裹，蔚为壮观。
고료카쿠는 150년 전에 완성된 서양식 성곽입니다. 옆에 서 있는 높이 107m의 고료카쿠 타워의 전망대에 올라가면 별 모양으로 둘러쳐진 수로의 아름다운 모습을 감상할 수 있습니다. 수로를 따라 약 1600그루의 벚꽃 나무가 있고 봄에는 홋카이도 최고의 벚꽃 명소 중 하나입니다. 여름에는 선명한 녹색, 가을에는 단풍, 겨울에는 눈이 수로를 둘러싸 매우 아름답습니다.

After visiting Sapporo, we took the train down to a more southern part of Hokkaido, Hakodate. The first places we visited were the Goryokaku Tower and Hakodate Morning Market. We wanted to see the cherry blossoms in full bloom at the Goryokaku Tower, but we were a few days too late. Hakodate is known for their fresh seafood, especially the squid. We had a lot of fun fishing for squid and tasting everything. I ordered the Dancing Squid Bowl. Some people may think it's torture to the squid but the brain has been removed, so it is actually already dead. The Discovery Channel had a video on this topic:

Fort Goryokaku (Early to mid May)
Fort Goryokaku (五稜郭) is a star shaped, Western style citadel. This massive fortress was built in the last years of the Edo Period for the defense of Hakodate against the imperialist threat posed by the Western powers. After the fort had lost its military importance, it was eventually became a public park in the 1914. More than one thousand cherry trees were planted along its moats, making it one of Hokkaido's best cherry blossom spots.
Access Information for Fort Goryokaku
From Hakodate Station, board the tram to Goryokaku Koen Mae (五稜郭公園前). The one-way journey takes 10 minutes with a cost of 230 yen. From where the fortress is another ten minutes on foot.
Hakodate Park (Early to mid May)
Hakodate Park (函館公園,Hakodate Koen) is one of Japan's first ever Western style parks. It is located at the foot of Mount Hakodate. Over four hundreds cherry trees are planted around its paths, fountain, mini zoo and children's playground. During the peak season, cherry trees are illuminated and many street stall are stand in a row. The Hakodate City Museum is also located on the park's grounds.

From Hakodate Station, board the tram for Aoyagicho Station(青柳町) The one-way journey takes about 10 minutes with a cost of 230yen. From where the park is another 4minutes on foot.
