Goryōkaku (五稜郭) is a star fort in the Japanese city of Hakodate on the island of Hokkaido. It was the main fortress of the short-lived Republic of Ezo.
Hakodate (函館市 Hakodate-shi) is a city and port located in Oshima Subprefecture, Hokkaido, Japan. It is the capital city of Oshima Subprefecture.
As of July 31, 2011, the city has an estimated population of 279,851 with 143,221 households, and a population density of 412.83 persons per km2 (1,069.2 persons per sq. mi.). The total area is 677.77 km2 (261.69 sq mi). The city is now the third biggest in Hokkaido after Sapporo and Asahikawa.
Fort Goryokaku Tower Hakodate Observatory Japan Hokkaido
View the Fort Goryokaku (五稜郭, Goryōkaku) from Goryokaku Tower, a massive, star shaped, western-style fort completed almost 150 years ago. Goryokaku fort was built in the last years of the Edo Period for the defense of Hakodate against the imperialist threat posed by the Western powers.
After the Goryokaku fort had lost its military importance, it was eventually turned into a public park in the 1910s. Over one thousand cherry trees were planted along its moats, making it one of Hokkaido's best cherry blossom spots. The peak of the blooming season usually takes place around early May.
A magnificent panoramic view of the entire star-shaped estate and surrounding moat unveils itself to visitors from the observatory platform of the 107-meter Goryokaku Tower, which stands adjacent to the fort Goryokaku.
The moat is surrounded by some 1,600 cherry trees, making the Goryokaku one of Hokkaido's top cherry blossom viewing spots in springtime. In summer the moat is fringed with lush greenery, which turns into a blazing scene of crimson foliage in the fall that is then blanketed with snow in the winter, creating an extremely beautiful vista for all seasons.

2019 Japan Trip - On top of the Goryokaku Tower in Hakodate (From 3/28/19)
Hakodate is a very nice city in the most southern area of Hokkaido, and we got to see some pretty great views from on top of the Goryokaku Tower.

Hakodate Morning Market Dancing Squid, Goryokaku Tower Cherry Blossoms: JAPAN VLOG EP4
After visiting Sapporo, we took the train down to a more southern part of Hokkaido, Hakodate. The first places we visited were the Goryokaku Tower and Hakodate Morning Market. We wanted to see the cherry blossoms in full bloom at the Goryokaku Tower, but we were a few days too late. Hakodate is known for their fresh seafood, especially the squid. We had a lot of fun fishing for squid and tasting everything. I ordered the Dancing Squid Bowl. Some people may think it's torture to the squid but the brain has been removed, so it is actually already dead. The Discovery Channel had a video on this topic:

Walking through Hakodate & visiting Goryokaku tower
Once I got off the tram from Hakodate station I filmed on my way to Goryokaku tower. Once I was there I made some footage of the view.
The latter segment is from an earlier video that I posted before, but I decided to merge it so I deleted the older video.
You get a nice view of the Goryokaku fort, which I will visit in the next video.

HAKODATE MAGISTRATE'S OFFICE
Hakodate magistrates office was established here in Hakodate by the Edo Shogunate when the port of Hakodate opened under the Japan-US treaty of Peace and Amity. The office was initially built at the foot of Mt. Hakodate . However , when it's location was regarded disadvantageous for defence. They decided to move the office further inland. In order to guard the new magistrate's office, western-style earthworks were contrived by a Dutch Scholar Takeda Ayasaburo and the Fort came to be known as Goryokaku due to its star-pentagonal configuration.
