Model Churches (1956)
Eastbourne, East Sussex.
M/S of three detailed wooden model cathedrals (Canterbury, San Antonio in Padua and San Francesco in Assisi) on a table with wood chips scattered about. M/S of John Hearsey sitting at the table and carving another model; this one is the cathedral at Cologne. C/Us as he carves a piece of wood with a razor blade to make a spire and glues it on the model - it looks like very intricate work. Commentator talks of John's interest in churches and history and how it grew into an exhaustive model making hobby. He picks up the model to examine it; commentator says it took six months to make.
M/Ss of the exterior of the Towner Art Gallery in Eastbourne; at an angle we see a poster advertising an exhibition of 'Models of European Cathedrals by John Hearsey'. M/S panning across a table where numerous models are displayed - the work involved is mind-boggling! M/S of the curate of Eastbourne Parish Church looking at the models and picking up one of St Peter's Cathedral (Rome) to examine it closely.
C/Us of a model the cathedrals of Seville and Lincoln; the Blue Mosque of Istanbul. C/U of the end of a ruler; it is taken away to show a tiny, detailed model behind of Leningrad's Church of the Resurrection, measuring about 2 inches! The display turntable rotates to show the other side of the model. Rotating C/U of Rouen Cathedral.
Note: John Hearsey was 27 when this story was shot. On file is a detailed list of the models in the exhibition plus a profile of John, by himself.

Kylemore Castle was built in 1867 by Mitchell Henry as a new home for he and his wife. Later, the property was sold to a group of Benedictine nuns who consecrated the chapel and opened a boarding school for girls.

Kylemore Abbey is a Benedictine monastery founded in 1920 on the grounds of Kylemore Castle, in Connemara, County Galway, Ireland. The abbey was founded for Benedictine Nuns who fled Belgium in World War I.
Kylemore Castle was built in 1868 as a private home for the family of Mitchell Henry and wife Margaret. The Abbey remained in Henry's estate after he returned to England. The castle was sold to the Duke and Duchess of Manchester in 1903, who resided there for several years before being forced to sell the house and grounds because of gambling debts.
The Estate includes large walled Victorian Gardens. Since the 1970s these have been open for public tours and 'nature' walks. The Benedictine community has restored the Abbey's gardens and church with donations and local artisans in order to be a self-sustaining estate.
We took a day tour from Galway to Connemara (3 hr drive) that was so worth the travel! We spent a whole 3 hours (which was still not enough in the estate... i definitely recommend driving there instead so you dont have to feel rushed as we did... but either way, the 3 hours gave us just enough time to explore the castle and gardens.

These masterpieces come from the sixteenth century. Material: boxwood. There are only 135 in the world and every baffled experts. The explanation has not yet been found, all hope for x-rays, the human eye simply can not cope.
Miniature altars of boxwood has long puzzled researchers worldwide. Recently, these tiny objects of religious articles were collected in private collections and studied again.
It is believed that the boxes were manufactured in a short period of time, somewhere between 1500 and 1530 years BC. Or in Flanders or the Netherlands. Let's take a minute to delve into the history, to understand a little better on the issue.
Throughout the Middle Ages, the church played a significant role in society, perfectly fitting into the mainstream in the West, the feudal system. As a major feudal lord, the church in different countries of Western Europe held up to 1/3 of the number of all cultivated land, which used the labor of serfs, using the same methods and techniques as secular lords, and receiving from them countless benefits.
Feudal Catholic Church could exist and thrive as long as it was dominated by the material basis - the feudal system. But in the XIV-XV centuries, first in Central Italy and Flanders, and since the end of the XV century and throughout Europe began to form a new class, gradually captures their hands on the economy - the bourgeois class.
She needed a new religion that would differ from Catholicism primarily simplicity and cheapness. For them, the Catholic Diocese of becoming not only unnecessary, but harmful and just the whole costly organization of the church with its pope, cardinals, bishops, monasteries and church lands.
So, the appearance of our boxes associated with the emergence of a new social class: the bourgeoisie. They were made at the very short time period, when the bourgeoisie has already occurred, and the church has not yet been split.
The representatives of the new class needed a portable religious utensils and were willing to pay for it properly. But with the changes in the church, the box just went out of fashion.
With the help of a microscope and advanced software for three-dimensional scanning, the researchers found out how confusing these miniature altars actually. The inner layers are adjacent to each other so tightly that hide jewelry that behind them. Only by means of X-ray can be detected. The products meet the tiny spiers, the size does not exceed the grass seed.
Despite the study, the majority of the production process remains a mystery.
