Visby (Sweden) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Visby in Sweden.
Visby is a city of both roses and ruins and capital of the Baltic island of Gotland in south east Sweden. It is one of the most important Hanse towns with a well conserved mediaeval cityscape. Since 1270, and for a hundred and fifty years, construction of a long mediaeval wall, up to ten metres high, was undertaken around the historic city centre. However, the residents of the city did not want to protect themselves from enemies from abroad, but the attacks of farmers on the island, to whom access to the city was prohibited. The mainly German Hanse merchants were very wealthy and did not wish to share their good fortune with anyone else.Construction continued unabated and a modern city of the Middle Ages was created with more, and higher, stone buildings than anywhere else in Sweden. In the little square with its old town hall, decisions of the council were formerly proclaimed… and the building of Gamla Apoteket shines out in all of its mediaeval splendour. The prevailing townscape is due to a law of the nineteenth century: for the restoration and preservation of the mediaeval buildings, property owners were exempted from paying tax. Visby was designated as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 1995 and is undoubtedly a priceless gem of the Middle Ages.

Top 8 Gotland Sweden places to spend your summer memorable this year.
Top 8 Gotland Sweden places to spend your summer memorable this year.
Most visitors come to Gotland to enjoy the sun and beaches, as well as the island's nature and culture. The main attractions on Gotland are listed below, from north to south.
1. Visit Pippi.
Pippi Longstocking is one of Sweden's most famous fictional characters. The cheeky yet kind girl who can shoot a revolver, carry a horse and take on the strongest man in the world was developed by author Astrid Lindgren, who based the adventurer's stories on growing up in Vimmerby in southeast Sweden. But the movies based on the book were filmed mostly on Gotland, and you can still go visit Pippi's oh-so-colorful home, Villa Villekulla.
2. FÅRÖ
Fårö, Gotland's smaller neighboring island, is located just to the northeast of Gotland. Fårö is reached by a free ferry from Fårösund that takes just 8 minutes. Its wonderful sandy beaches, austere vistas and magnificent fields of sea stacks make Fårö one of Gotland's most popular and talked about attractions. The famous film director Ingmar Bergman lived on Fårö for much of his life. After his death, the Bergman Centre was created on Fårö, which is a foundation and also a place to meet and discuss Ingmar Bergman's life work and artistry. The Bergman Centre organizes trips around Fårö, lectures, film screenings, exhibitions and the annual Bergman Week. Open during the summer season.
3. Visit Visby.
Visby is the best preserved medieval city in Scandinavia and is on the Unesco list of World Heritage Sites. A maze of cobbled streets, cute houses, and church ruins sit inside the city's walls as well as stunning botanical gardens, museums and plenty of pretty cafes and restaurants. Be warned, you will likely jostle for a lunch spot here. The city is also set to host Sweden's largest international crime festival later this summer, with global guests invited to get a taste for Nordic Noir in one of the country's sunniest spots.
4. Rock with the raukar.
Gotland is famed for its raukar, or sea stacks. These dramatic rock formations crop up on beaches all around the island. Some look like faces, others resemble big brutal phalluses, but none fail to impress. Jungfrun, the virgin of the north-west coast, is the biggest, while the ones on Fårö are also unmissable. Raukar is created from when limestone erodes.
5. Jump into the Blue Lagoon
This former limestone quarry in Fleringe on Gotland's northern rocky coast has stunning deep blue waters. Its color is more vibrant than most Swedish lakes and it tends to trap the heat in too, so your dip shouldn't be too chilly.
6. Pretend you're on a safari.
A recent tourist campaign for Gotland called it the world on one island and it there is certainly a huge variety of stunning landforms, wildlife, and sights to explore. You won't see any zebras, but you might just spot a Russ (Gotland Pony) - the only indigenous horse breed in Sweden. There's a reserve on Lojsta Heath where around 80 of the animals wander freely. On the east of Gotland, Torsburgen Nature Reserve is home to the rare Gotlandssippa flower.
7. Churches and windmills.
Churches used to be a sign of wealth in Swedish towns and cities - and Gotland is overflowing with them. In fact, that has more churches per capita than any other part of the Nordic Nation. The majority date back to the Middle Ages, between 1100 and 1300. There are also plenty of historic windmills and farms to check out on Gotland - be warned your camera's memory card or mobile phone will soon be bursting with snaps of stunning historic architecture.
8. Bike around the island.
While you can drive the length of Gotland just a few hours, why not spend a few days biking the coast instead. You can bring your own cycle over by ferry or hire one for a few hours a day or a week from several stores in Visby.

Helsingborg: The Real Sweden
In this video we hit the highlights of South Sweden's Skåne, from Helsingborg's city center, with its beautiful North Harbor and Sweden's oldest pedestrian shopping street; to the open-air museum Fredriksdal, larger than Stockholm's Skansen; to the gardens (named Europe's most beautiful) and palace Sofiero; and on to Mölle, the birthplace of Swedish sin.
At Mölle, we stop for a round of golf at nature's playground, Kullaberg, which has been described as a compact New Zealand and is also noted for hiking and biking trails, as well as porpoise safaris.
We leave the Kulla peninsula to visit the home of one of the world's greatest sopranists, Birgit Nilsson, and a museum dedicated to her, before continuing on to beautiful Båstad, Sweden's riviera and home to the Swedish Open Tennis Tournament.
We conclude our visit at one of Northern Europe's most important weaveries, founded by seamstress Märta Måås Fjätterström, before heading back to Helsingborg.
Helsingborg is situated only one hour from Copenhagen and directly across from Elsinore (home to Hamlet's Castle) at the narrowest part of the sound between Denmark and Sweden.
Cruise passengers disembarking for the day in Helsingborg have remarked more than once that now they were seeing The Real Sweden.

Stockholm and Visby - Two Jewels in Sweden
Sweden's capital of Stockholm is one of Europe's prettiest cities. It is splendidly situated on fourteen islands where Lake Malaren meets the Baltic Sea. The most visited quarter is the picturesque old town called Gamla Stan but the center of the city and neighborhoods such as Östermalm and Södermalm are also well-worth exploring. Extending from Stockholm into the Baltic Sea is their famous archipelago of thousands of islands. Staying in the lovely residential area of Bromma in Stockholm's western reaches puts all of the sights within easy access.
In the Baltic Sea and a short plane flight or ferry boat trip away lies Sweden's largest island called Gotland. Its principal city is the atmospheric medieval walled city of Visby. This is a peaceful destination for most of the year but is very much alive with vacationers during the summer months. The old Hansa city of Visby is also a good starting point to bike out on the island of Gotland - especially to the spectacular Högklint cliffs.
So sit back and listen to the haunting strains of Swedish composer Wilhelm Stenhammar's Sentimental Romance for Violin - opus 28 while you travel through this beautiful region of the world. I hope you enjoy!

From Gotland with some tips on casting
Some footage from a trip to Gotland fishing sea trout. Also talking about casting and giving intermediate casters some tips to improve in particular their distance casting. Minimal editing, this was mostly to test my new camera as I plan to shoot more this summer when I'm going hiking in the Swedish mountains for two weeks.
