Goukamma Nature Reserve - Knysna - South Africa
The glorious Goukamma Nature Reserve is one of those unrivalled hideaways that, despite being on the popular Garden Route, manages to remain relatively obscure and unknown - a treasure trove near the mouth of the Goukamma River.

Goukamma Nature Reserve (Kiani Satu oil spill) near Knysna
On the 9th of August a German owned vessel, the Kiani Satu, was on its way from Cape Town to Gabon when it ran aground in Goukamma Nature Reserve and Marine Protected Area. The 168 m long vessel was carrying 15 000 tons of rice and 330 tons of fuel oil.
Following the event someone remarked: While there is no current threat to the environment, we hope the ship is towed off soon before this turns into another Seli 1.
Since then oil has been leaking out of the vessel which has washed up on beaches and even entered the Goukamma estuary. The damages to local sandy beach and rocky shore ecological systems are likely to be massive, and already there have been incidences of birds completely covered in oil.
This is a compilation of footage that I filmed on Sunday 11th of August, and since then the situation has become much worse. The oil also threatens our valuable estuaries, which are integral to providing refugia for juvenile fish and are also home to the world's only populations of the Knysna seahorse. Unfortunately, oil has already breached the Goukamma estuary and with the swell expected over the next few days, it is possible that the ship will break up further, spilling more oil into the sea. Let's hope that the organisations working around the clock to sort out this problem will be able to reduce the extent of the spill and that the insurance company will cough up to pay all the bills necessary for the clean up operation.
UPDATE:
The Kiani Satu was floated offshore and eventually sunk in deeper waters. Authorities are not sure how the oil still remaining on the ship will disperse.

Garden Route National Park-Garden Route Tsitsikamma, Knysna, National Park
Tall cliffs plunge in dramatic ravines to river mouths in the Garden Route National Park. Evergreen temperate forests merge with rocky beaches to touch the warm Indian Ocean. This is a place of mosses and ferns, thickly carpeted forest floor from which soar 800-year-old giant Outeniqua yellowwoods, draped in Old Man's Beard lichens. In the flagshipTsitsikamma National Park section, look out for inquisitive vervet monkeys, watchful genets, blue duiker, bush pig, Cape clawless otters, and if you're very lucky, leopard. The water-based life of the Garden Route National Park is just as rich - lagoons and strings of shining lakes begging to be explored by canoe.Offshore, whales and dolphins surf the waves. This wilderness is counterpointed by pleasant coastal towns like Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and Sedgefield, where you can eat fresh oysters, drink locally brewed beer, swing from bungies, whizz through forest canopies, or simply relax on a long, clean beach. In truth, this is not a single block of conserved land. Instead, it is a daring new experiment in conservation. A mosaic of protected areas sprawled along the country's south-eastern coast have been gathered under one management plan. They include the peerless Tsitsikamma National Park, Wilderness National Park and linking them, the Knysna National Lake Area, Soetkraal Wilderness and Conservation Area, and the Robberg and Goukamma Nature Reserves.Although the Garden Route National Park is punctuated by human settlement, the pristine sections are some of the most dramatic and beautiful in the country. The hiking options available in the Garden Route are excellent. From the raw tang of sea breezes, to children's laughter on beaches, to the rush of sweet forest, this is a land that engages all the senses. No two people experience it in the same way.

Knysna forests were largely unharmed
One of the main attractions for visitors is the mystical Knysna forest with its indigenous trees, some over 600 years old! Everyone was concerned about how the fires impacted on the forests and vegetation. But initial findings indicate the iconic Knysna forest was not affected by the fire.
The forest is a haven for 465 species occurring in the forest areas, over 22 species of amphibians, 24 reptile species, 305 species of birds and some 42% of South Africa's 290 mammal species. At least 7.1% of the Park's mammals are listed as Endangered (EN) and 14% as Vulnerable (VU).

Hiking in the Garden Route South Africa
While traveling across South Africa in September-October 2016, we pursued many hiking trails while in the Garden Route. This video gives a short glimpse into a few of the treks we did. The video first shows hiking (and using the boat to cross) the Goukamma Blombos Trail in the Goukamma Nature Reserve. Also shown is a river crossing at the Jubilee Creek trek, then goes onto some short coastal hikes around Knysna. Finally this short video closes with the famous Storms River Suspension Bridge (Tsitsikamma National Park). Hiking the Garden Route in South Africa was awesome!

The long beach stretches some 5km between the village of Buffels Bay and Brenton on Sea and is part of the Goukamma Nature reserve. Keep a lookout for dolphins in late winter and spring!
