Chania Tour - visiting the Monastery of Agia Triada in Crete, Greece (Friday, October 11th 2013)
Website:
CHANIA Port of Call for Navigator of the Seas cruise ship docked in Souda Bay actually - in sunny Crete, Greece
Friday morning (October 11, 2013), we had a TAXI waiting for us in Souda Bay -- pre-scheduled for a day tour (at 30 EURO/hour standard rate). Mano was our driver for the day!
First STOP -- enjoyed a beautiful sunrise and views of our RCI cruise ship from the Souda Bay War Cemetery (British Commonwealth War Cemetery) -- located approximately 5 km east from the center of Chania (Xania).
Next STOP --
The Monastery of Agia Triada (Holy Trinity) -- or Tzagarolon Monastery as it is also known -- is one of the most impressive monasteries you will see in Crete.
The Monastery of Agia Triada is located on the Akrotiri Peninsula, north of Chania Prefecture.
It is 15 kilometres from Chania; close to the equally famous Monastery of Gouverneto.
Once again, we were the first to arrive (before the large tour bus caught up to us as their passengers did when we were leaving the Suda Bay Cemetery earlier that Friday morning).
As soon as you enter the gate, you will see the wells and stairs adorned with bougainvillea, oleander and other seasonal flowers, adding a lovely accent to the complex.
This may be one of the few Cretan monasteries where the inner courtyard is so beautiful and well cared for.
The west wing of the monastery is a three-story building and includes vaulted storerooms where the wine and olive oil were once kept, while most of the courtyard is taken up by a large cistern which was used to collect rainwater from the surrounding buildings.
The Monastery of Agia Triada has a distinctive façade with Doric columns, but the elements of Renaissance architecture reminded us that the monastery was built by the Cretan monks Ieremias and Lavrentios (of the Venetian Orthodox Tzagarolos family).
By Orthodox Church tradition, the Patriarch has the right, when a monastery is founded in his jurisdiction, to send a cross which is placed in the foundations and establishes its direct dependence on him.
Monastery of Agia Triada opening hours:
8 a.m. to sunset
Winter :8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and then 4 p.m. to sunset
Gentle REMINDER:
Please make sure you are decently dressed when visiting the monastery.
The Monastery of Agia Triada Tzagarolon was built in 1634, on the site of a small church dedicated to the Holy Apostles.
The monastery supports schools in Chania, and a seminary has operated within the monastery itself since 1892.
We visited the monastery church and complex and then wandered round the area for a while.
NOT to be missed -- the large exhibition of woodcarvings and icons in the monastery's Museum.
Inside the complex there was an olive press and a cellar for the wine produced by the monastery, while on the south side is the monastery library, formerly the Abbot's Room.
In recent years the Monastery of Agia Triada Tzagarolon has developed the systematic cultivation of organic vines and olives, and produces excellent wine, tsikoudia (raki), olive oil, honey, vinegar and olive oil soap.
The monastery produces 20 tonnes of organic virgin olive oil per year. It has won international prizes and is mainly sold abroad.
The following wines are produced: dry red Cabernet, dry red Fokiano Romeiko, dry red Merlot, dry white Trebiano
Naturally, all the products of Agia Triada are available for sale from the monastery shop.
We find the Monastery to be a lovely, peaceful and pretty impressive place - certainly worth a visit!

Keras Kardiotissas Monastery, Crete

Touring Crete - Inside the Chrysoskalitissa Monastery, Elafonisi
Inside the historic Chrysoskalitissa Monastery.
Elafonisi isn't just about the beautiful beaches, this historic monastery is worth visiting while en route to the famous beach destination of Elafonisi. Its history was born from divine measures, according to local legend, with evidence that it was the Holy Virgin Mother herself that chose the site onto which to build this monastery.
The island of Crete has a long and rugged history, and Chrysoskalitissa is no different. Built, destroyed, and rebuilt again only to face destruction and disrepair at various points in history, the structure stands high today as a memorial to the island's past.
When on travel, it's always enjoyable to learn about a country's or a region's past in between the beaches, food, and good life - this monastery is at a convenient stopping point on the road to Elafonisi for those that wish to step back in time a bit and appreciate some culture and history.
Ah yeah.
Enjoy.

Holy Monasteries of Crete
Crete, like the rest of Greece, has hundreds of monasteries scattered across its four administrative regions. Some of these monasteries have been closely linked with the war of independence (1821 - 1828) like Arkadi Monastery or the invasion of the German army (1941 - 1944) like Prevelis Monastery. Monasteries are a pole of attraction not only for Greek Orthodoxs but also for foreign visitors that come into thousands in Crete.
Walk through St. Antonio's ravine (2), Crete - (http://www.nat-adv.gr)
One of the best known ravines of Crete is St. Antonio's ravine, also known as Patsos ravine, named from the village near it. It is about 35 minutes away from the city of Rethymnon, in the Sivritos area. The ravine is about 5 km long and requires about 2 hours to traverse. A small river goes through its bottom and the whole ravine is full of plants and trees.

Crete | Faneromeni Monastery
Crete | Faneromeni Monastery. The Faneromeni monastery stands on -- or rather clings to -- a spur of cliffs overlooking the large Bay of Mirabello in the northeast Crete. It can be seen from the narrow coastal plain and the main road, though it's partly camouflaged with the grey-brown rock.
Built in the 16th century, the Faneromeni monastery looks more like a defensive redoubt than a cloister, as it was hewn into the rock face as a defensive measure against the Ottoman Turk threat. The sea view from here is quite stunning.
The heart of the still-operating monastery is the church hidden inside a cave, where every 15th of August the devout flock mark the Dormition of the Virgin Mary in a colourful and moving spectacle. It is said that the monastery was built at that spot after a shepherd discovered an icon of the Virgin while looking for a lost sheep.
The Faneromeni monastery is 24 kilometres south of Agios Nikolaos, easily reachable by a side road leading off the main highway to Sitia.

Monastery of St. George Selinari Crete
Photos I shot of St. George Selinari Monastery in Crete set to an Indian cut called Mumbai Mood (I bet George Harrison would dig this tune—sounds like something from Revolver).
The male monastery of Saint George Selinaris is built in the heart of the gorge Selinari, near Vrachasi village and Neapolis. Next to the monastery passes the National Road connecting Heraklion to Agios Nikolaos, which is the main reason why Selinaris receives many visitors daily. For the Cretans it is considered bad luck to cross the canyon without stopping at St. George. This has prevailed since the past, when the travellers stopped here to rest with their animals.
According to tradition, a monk from Rhodes, named Nikolaos, was led by God to a place where he found the icon of St. George and thus he built a church. Nikolaos lived at Selinari till his death, when he was buried in a small cave at the top of Anavlohos mount, which was carved by him. Several years after his death, when a boat from Rhodes visited Crete, the sailors were led by a shining star to the tomb of Nikolaos. They understood that it was a divine hint and transferred his bones to Rhodes. Anavlohos cave is located on the east side of the gorge, just opposite the monastery, and you can locate the exact position by looking up the gorge walls and see a big cross. The cave is accessible on foot, but climbing the steep path requires good physical condition.
Finally, during the Ottoman Era, the Turks probably tried to destroy the monastery, as it is evidenced by the three bullets that have stuck in the old icon of Saint George, which Is also considered miraculous.
It is worth stopping at the monastery and admiring the beauty of the lush canyon and cool off at the local spring. The monks are very friendly and ready to tell you the history of the monastery. The main body of the central church is modern, while the chapel of St. George (the initial temple built by Nikolaos) has also modern wall paintings. Here also operates a modern nursing home that has been built on the ruins of the old cells of the monastery.

Havgas gorge Lassithi Crete Greece
Havgas canyon Lassithi, Crete: a special hike through the Havgas canyon in Lassithi, not to be confused with the Havgas gorge at the village Kalamafka. This gorge has a river with melt water from the Katharos plateau. There are not a lot of people hiking in this gorge. This is actually strange, because it is a magnificent canyon with beautiful scenery and nature. It is not an easy walk, but very suitable if you are an experienced hiker. There is no marked hiking path, you will follow the river. The river is dry from the end of May, but from December up to May water runs through the river. It is very clear drinking water, this water is later collected in basins on the Lassithi plateau. If the basins are full, the water is piped to the reservoir lake of Afdou. The river actually ends in the Aposolemis canyon, about 20 kilometre further.
Canyon on Crete (Havgas): this canyon is in some places wide and later on very small. The canyon is situated between the mountains Katharios Lakkos (1200 meter) and Kefala (1270 meter). The length of the gorge is approx. is 4 kilometre. The gorge starts at a small freshwater lake at Lassithi, nearby Agios Georgios and Agios Konstandinos. In the early morning the view over this freshwater lake is fantastic.
Nature in the Havgas gorge & canyon: you will spot a lot of birds in the gorge. Because there are not a lot of people walking through this gorge, the gorge is full with flowers and plants during spring. In the early winter you will already see a lot of beautiful flowers. High up in the mountains grows diktamos, from which the famous Cretan mountain tea is made.
The Havgas boulder: a unique stone, which is made round by the water that flows around the stone. It looks just like this rock has been put here on purpose. At this boulder the hike does not continue, during the winter and spring there is too much water and it is too high to climb. This point is called Neraidokolympos, you have to walk back from this point.
Waterfalls on Crete (Havgas): during your hike through the gorge you will see a lot of waterfalls. Before the boulder you can climb approx. 22 meter to 3 smaller waterfalls. During the winter it is inevitable to get wet clothes. It can be a bit dangerous at some point, so be careful!
Walking in Havgas, Lassithi: if you leave from Agios Konstandionos, this walk is approx. 8-10 kilometre. The hike through the gorge starts at the water basins. You will have to open some fences for the sheep and goats along your way. Make sure you always close these fences, because of herds of sheep and goats. Don't go exploring on your own, when it is not possible!
Hiking on Lassithi, Crete: the beautiful green plateau of Lassithi is the whole year perfect for special surprising hikes on Crete. After the gorge, you can continue your walk on the Lassithi plateau. The plateau is a rural area with several villages, surrounded by the magnificent Dikti mountains. There are lots of walks available in this area.
