Mexico braces for strongest hurricane in Western hemisphere
YOUR DESCRIPTION HAS REACHED THE LIMIT OF CHARACTERS ALLOWED AND WAS CUT. MANZANILLO, Mexico (CBS NEWS) -- Hurricane Patricia headed toward southwestern Mexico Friday as a monster Category 5 storm, the strongest ever in the Western Hemisphere that forecasters said could make a potentially catastrophic landfall later in the day. Residents of a stretch of Mexico's Pacific Coast dotted with resorts and fishing villages on Thursday boarded up homes and bought supplies ahead of Patricia's arrival. With maximum sustained winds near 200 mph, Patricia is the strongest storm ever recorded in the eastern Pacific or in the Atlantic, said Dave Roberts, a hurricane specialist at the U.S. National Hurricane Center. Patricia's power was comparable to that of Typhoon Haiyan, which left more than 7,300 dead or missing in the Philippines two years ago, according to the U.N.'s World Meteorological Organization. This is really, really, really strong, WMO spokeswoman Clare Nullis told a U.N. briefing in Geneva, according to Reuters. In Mexico, officials declared a state of emergency in dozens of municipalities in Colima, Nayarit and Jalisco states that contain the bustling port of Manzanillo and the posh resort of Puerto Vallarta. The governor of Colima ordered schools closed on Friday, when the storm was forecast to make what the Hurricane Center called a potentially catastrophic landfall. Teams of police and civil protection were walking along Puerto Vallarta's waterfront Friday morning advising people to evacuate. According to the 2010 census, there were more than 7.3 million inhabitants in Jalisco state and more than 255,000 in Puerto Vallarta municipality. There were more than 650,000 in Colima state, and more than 161,000 in Manzanillo. Evacuations were under way in Puerto Vallarta Friday, with officials taking people to 14 shelters, mostly in schools, according to the Jalisco government's webpage. Exact numbers of those evacuated were not immediately available. Luis Felipe Puente Espinosa, national coordinator for civil protection, said that three airports in the path of Patricia in southwestern Mexico have been shut down as the storm approaches. Roberto Ramirez, the director of Mexico's National Water Commission, which includes the nation's meteorological service, said that Hurricane Patricia will be powerful enough to lift up automobiles, destroy homes that are not sturdily built with cement and steel and will be able to drag along people caught outside when the storm strikes. Ramirez said that the people in the most danger from the hurricane will be those on the coast, especially in the state of Jalisco. Rain pounded Manzanillo late Thursday while people took last-minute measures ahead of Patricia, which quickly grew from a tropical storm into a Category 5 hurricane, leaving authorities scrambling to make people safe. At a Wal-Mart in Manzanillo, shoppers filled carts with non-perishables as a steady rain fell outside. Veronica Cabrera, shopping with her young son, said Manzanillo tends to flood with many small streams overflowing their banks. She said she had taped her windows at home to prevent them from shattering. Alejandra Rodriguez, shopping with her brother and mother, was buying 10 liters of milk, a large jug of water and items like tuna and canned ham that do not require refrigeration or cooking. The family already blocked the bottoms of the doors at their home to keep water from entering. Manzanillo's main street really floods and cuts access to a lot of other streets. It ends up like an island, Rodriguez said. In Puerto Vallarta, restaurants and stores taped or boarded-up windows, and residents raced to stores for last-minute purchases ahead of the storm. The Hurricane Center in Miami warned that preparations should be rushed to completion, saying the storm could cause coastal flooding, destructive waves and flash floods. This is an extremely dangerous, potentially catastrophic hurricane, center meteorologist Dennis Feltgen said. Feltgen said Patricia also poses problems for Texas. Forecast models indicate that after the storm breaks up over land, remnants of its tropical moisture will likely combine with and contribute to heavy rainfall that is already soaking Texas independently of the hurricane, he said. It's only going to make a bad situation worse, he said. In Colima, authorities handed out sandbags to help residents protect their homes from flooding. Patricia's maximum sustained winds had increased to 200 mph - a Category 5 storm, the highest designation on the Saffir-Simpson scale used to quantify a hurricane's wind strength. At 11:00 am Friday, Patricia was located about 125 miles southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico, and about 195 miles south of Cabo Corrientes, Mexico. Patricia is moving north at 10 mph and continues to have maximum sustained winds remain near 200 mph with higher gusts. It was on a projected track to come ashore between Manzanillo and Puerto Vallarta sometime Fri

(Our strikes slip strike in California. If this is the line here, one slides horizontally past the other like this. In a jerking manner. Where in this case, it's sliding down underneath like this. So it's thrusting it's way underneath. Certainly it was felt as far away as Mexico City and of course Acapulco and Oaxaca. It's estimated that about 180K are within the very strong quaking zone. So far there haven't been a lot of reports, possibly the communication system is down. We'll have to wait for that to be restored before we get the actual information. There have been earthquakes all along here, but there's sort of a hole here and we call that sort of thing a seismic gap and we give a name to it. The speculation is that a future earthquake is going to fill the in that gap )

Big Bend National Park - Santa Elena Canyon, Castolon, La Harmonia Store
We spent a few hours (not long enough ) driving through Big Bend National Park. During our drive we hiked the Santa Elena Canyon trail. So beautiful. We stopped at a few other spots of notable mention on our way out. Leave no doubt, we will be back to cover more ground. We hope you enjoy this little window into what this place has to offer.
Information below is from the National Parks website. See link below.
La Harmonia Store
From 1902 until the establishment of the park in 1944, it served, though not always by virtue of legal designation, as consulate, sheriffs' department, notary public, bank, and a source of medical, hardware, and ranch supplies in northern Mexico and the southern Big Bend.
In 1901, Cipriano Hernandez had the idea of farming the fertile floodplain around Castolon and selling his produce to the miners in Terlingua, just up the creek. The east end of the rambling adobe building now known as the Alvino House was the original Castolon store, where Hernandez vended his melons, pumpkins, squash, and beans. In 1914, he sold the property to Clyde Buttrill, who hired James Sublett to manage the farm and store. Sublett and his family moved into the house, and later moved the store into larger building located across from Cottonwood Campground at Old Castolon.
Alvino House
In addition to the store, Castolon includes the oldest known adobe structure in Big Bend National Park (the Alvino House), another store building (Old Castolon), and numerous adobe ruins that were once homes for the many Mexican American and Anglo families that lived in the area. There are two cemeteries in the Castolon area.

Puerto Vallarta (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈpweɾto βaˈʝaɾta]) is a Mexican balneario resort city situated on the Pacific Ocean's Bahía de Banderas. The 2010 census reported Puerto Vallarta's population as 255,725 making it the second largest city in the state of Jalisco. The City of Puerto Vallarta is the government seat of the Municipality of Puerto Vallarta which comprises the city as well as population centers outside of the city extending from Boca de Tomatlán to the Nayarit border (the Ameca River).
The city is located at 20°40′N 105°16′W. The municipality has an area of 502.19 square miles (1,300.7 km2). To the north it borders the southwest part of the state of Nayarit. To the east it borders the municipality of Mascota and San Sebastián del Oeste, and to the south it borders the municipalities of Talpa de Allende and Cabo Corriente.
Puerto Vallarta is named after Ignacio Vallarta, a former governor of Jalisco. In Spanish, Puerto Vallarta is often shortened to Vallarta, while English speakers call the city P.V. for short. In internet shorthand the city is often referred to as PVR, after the International Air Transport Association airport code for its Gustavo Diaz Ordaz International Airport.

Hurricane Patricia: Mexico awaits 'strongest ever' storm
The strongest hurricane ever recorded is bearing down on Mexico's Pacific coast, threatening a potentially catastrophic landfall.
Mexican authorities have begun evacuating residents ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Patricia.
The storm is comparable to Typhoon Haiyan, which killed 6,300 people in the Philippines in 2013, the World Meteorological Organization says.
A state of emergency has been declared in three states in Patricia's path.
The category five hurricane is expected to make landfall in the next few hours, with winds of 305km/h (190mph).
in the port town of Manzanillo at 17:00 local time (22:00 GMT) shows trees bending in severe wind.
The US National Hurricane Center said on its website: Potentially catastrophic Hurricane Patricia should make landfall in Mexico in the next several hours.
The centre added that it was the strongest storm it had recorded in the eastern Pacific or the Atlantic.
It has already produced the third lowest barometer reading ever recorded - a pressure of 880 millibars at the centre of the storm - the centre reported.
It also warned of potential flooding from the sea and destructive waves.
The hurricane's winds are strong enough to get a plane in the air and keep it flying, World Meteorological Organization spokeswoman Claire Nullis said.
According to forecasters, Patricia will make landfall in the western state of Jalisco, home to the resort town of Puerto Vallarta, which could lie directly in its path.
Police patrols in the resort urged people to leave the shorefront for safer areas at least three blocks inland, while loudspeakers ordered hotel residents to evacuate.
The town's airport, along with two others in the path of the storm, were closed.
Schools have been closed in Jalisco, Colima and Guerrero states.
Shop owners in Manzanillo, a major port in neighbouring Colima state, have boarded up windows.
[It's] better to be safe than sorry. Hurricanes are unpredictable, furniture store manager Enrique Esparza told AFP news agency.
Residents have also been stocking up on food and other supplies.
Heavy rains often lead to flooding in the town, said Alejandra Rodriguez, who was shopping at Wal-Mart in Manzanillo with her brother and mother.
It ends up like an island, she said.
Some rural areas are prone to landslides and flooding. The government has warned that ash from the nearby Colima volcano, which has become increasingly active this year, could combine with heavy rainfall to trigger huge mudflows.
Mexico has to deal with tropical storms arriving from both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans at this time of year.
Mexico cartel capo killed in shootout
(10 Feb 2017) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: 4080491
An alleged regional leader of the Beltran Leyva drug cartel and 12 accomplices have been killed in a clash with Mexican marines who poured gunfire into a house from a helicopter-mounted machine gun.
The federal Interior Department said via Twitter that Juan Francisco Patron Sanchez headed the cartel's operations in the Pacific coast state of Nayarit and in the southern part of Jalisco state. The Navy official identified the dead capo by the criminal nickname H2.
A Mexican Navy official who was not authorized to be quoted by name said Friday that Patron's group had opened fire on marines and had barricaded themselves in the upper part of a house in the Nayarit state capital of Tepic.
The official said that a helicopter gunship had been called in to provide dissuasive fire, to suppress outgoing gunfire from the structure on Thursday.
Use of such minigun weapons from a helicopter gunship is extremely rare in urban areas. They apparently have been used before by Mexican police, but usually only in rural areas.
The Navy said the helicopter gunship was used in accordance with its rules of engagement, with the aim of reducing the level of aggression and reducing the risk of civilian or federal casualties.
The Navy said that a grenade launcher and several rifles and pistols were found at the scene.
The Navy said a second gunbattle occurred soon afterward near the Tepic airport, when federal forces came under attack from gunmen. They returned fire, killing four members of the same cartel.

13th May 2016 - Concern for CERN - Oklahoma Earthquakes - Volcanic Eruptions - EU Referendum!
Transcript:
But first let's talk about the important EU referendum which will be held in Britain on June 23rd 2016. As said by the conservative government when elected in, a referendum would be held giving citizens in Britian the opporutnity to decide whether they would like to stay in the EU or if they would like to leave. There are many pros and cons with both, but ultimately the decision will be made next month. Now here is the latest poll taken from Brexit polling on the Finacial Times website. Here it shows that of the people surveyed, 46% want to stay whilst 43% want to leave and the other 11% were not surveyed or will not vote in the referndum. These margins have been changing quite a lot over the past few weeks. Brexit had a strong 53% leave a few weeks ago and has now currently gone down by ten percent. So why? Why do people want to stay? Well we think we many guess why. A lot of the mainstream media recently has been reporting several things about why we should stay in the EU. Even President Obama weighed in when he visited London to meet with David Cameron a few weeks. During a speech Obama made a statement that Britain should remain in the EU as it would make the world more safer and more prosperous and would make a stronger connection with the transatlantic union. Also Hillary Clinton weighed in a few weeks urging Britain to stay in the EU stating that transatlantic co-operation is essential and that co-operation is strongest with Europe united. Obama also went on to mention that the importance of TTIP and climate change are important reasons why Britain should remain in the EU. The Bank of England and the IMF have also warned that Britain is at risk economically if Britain votes to leave. The margins are quite close together at the minute, so the vote could go either way next month. Vote Remain or Vote Leave. Comment below and let us know what you think!
Now we head to the next news item. Strange low magnitude earthquakes have been felt in Oklahoma in the United States of America. Magnitude 3 earthquakes have been felt quite often over the past few days and past few weeks with little explanation as to why they have been occurring so often. Lately we have seen a vast increase of earthquake worldwide with over 3,000 earthquake felt of magnitudes 2 to 8 in last month alone, a record amount of earthquakes this decade as the average is just below two thousand per month in this magnitude range. Even Europe has seen an unusual increase in earthquakes. So far seismic activity is slowing down as larger magnitude earthquakes have been decreasing these past few days. Scientists though are still concerned that stress may be building up on the San Andreas fault line, California's most notorious transform fault where people have been speculating for years now that there will be a mega-quake there with a magnitude 8+. Earthquakes are very hard to predict, but scientists in California say that there could be an earthquake there at any time. In Oklahoma there have been earthquake swarms with low magnitude from 2009 until now, only now the amount is increasing and they are occurring quite often. It is apparent that the earthquakes in Oklahoma are linked to man made causes with the amount of oil and gas production where vast amounts of waste water is being injected into the ground.
As well as increased earthquake activity - there has been a sudden increase of volcanic eruptions globally with earthquake swarms detected at Mount St. Helens in the north west of America. Scientists have stated that the cause of the earthquake swarms at mt. st. Helen's is due to the recharge of magma in the volcano - apparently it is not ready to erupt just yet but it is still a sign that slowly it may be awakening from its dormant state. Now people in New Zealand are being warned about the Lord of the Rings volcano as lake water at the volcano has suddenly increased in temperature - double the temperature in fact - suggesting that magma is moving up the ground. Popocatepetl in Mexico erupted a couple of weeks ago and volcanoes erupted in Japan after an 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck there also.
Next - there have been reports of an unusual cloud portal anomaly over Geneva in Switzerland in a concentric circle above the CERN facility. The phenomena has baffled meteorologists saying that the cloud never produced any rain and have also stated that the problem must have been the radars. These anomalies have been reported above CERN before - back in 2011 - there has been no explanation so far as to what is the cause of these portal type rings of clouds. Recently CERN have boosted the energy levels of the large hadron collider in the hope to find super symmetry and the dark universe! So are they getting closer and closer to opening another dimension? What do you think? Let me know in the comment section below! In the desription I have included a link to the report on this unusual CERN activity from C. Ervana's channel!

STORYLINE
A volcanic eruption of Mount Merapi on Tuesday killed at least 25 people, forced thousands to flee down its slopes and spewed burning ash and smoke high into
the air on the island of Java.
Meanwhile, off the coast of Sumatra, about 800 miles (1,300 kilometres) west of the volcano, rescuers battled rough seas to reach Indonesia's Mentawai islands, where a 10-foot tsunami triggered by an earthquake on Monday night swept away hundreds of homes, killing at least 113 villagers, said Mujiharto of the Health Ministry's crisis centre. Up to 500 others are missing.
The twin disasters happened hours apart in one of the most seismically active regions on the planet.
Scientists have warned that pressure building beneath Merapi's lava dome could trigger its most powerful explosion in years.
But a government volcanologist, expressed hope the 9,737-foot (2,968-metre) mountain, which sent rocks and debris cascading down its southern slope, could be releasing steam slowly.
A 2006 eruption at Merapi killed two people, one in 1994 killed 60 people, and a 1930 blast killed 1,300.
After refusing to budge from the volcano's fertile slopes, saying they wanted to tend to their crops and protect their homes, villagers started streaming by the thousands into makeshift emergency shelters late on Tuesday.
Many carried sleeping mats, bags of clothes and food as they settled in.
Officials said earlier that by closely monitoring the volcano 310 miles (500 kilometres) southeast of the capital of Jakarta, they thought they could avoid casualties.
But the death toll rose quickly.
A spokeswoman at the main hospital dealing with victims, tallied 25 bodies and said more than a dozen others were admitted with injuries.
Local media showed police and volunteers pulling several ash-covered bodies and carrying them to waiting vehicles.
Among the dead was a 2-month-old baby, said a hospital worker.
Three people at Panti Nugroho hospital died of burns after being hit by a searing cloud of ash, officials said.
Even as they contended with the volcano - one of 129 to watch in the world's largest archipelago - officials were trying to assess the impact of Monday night's 7.7-magnitude earthquake off Sumatra that triggered the killer tsunami.
The quake, just 13 miles (20 kilometres) beneath the ocean floor, was followed by at least 14 aftershocks, the largest measuring 6.2, according to the US Geological Survey.
