North Brother Island, Bronx, New York
North Brother Island is a small islands 20 acres (8.1 ha) located in New York City's East River between the Bronx and Rikers Island.
The island was uninhabited until 1885, when Riverside Hospital moved there from Blackwell's Island, now known as Roosevelt Island. Riverside Hospital was founded in the 1850s as the Smallpox Hospital to treat and isolate victims of that disease. Its mission eventually expanded to other quarantinable diseases. The island housed the Riverside Hospital from 1881-1943, WWII veterans’ housing from 1946-1951, and a youth drug rehabilitation center from 1952-1964

Humbug Mountain, Oregon Beach Voyage
#fulltimerv #humbugmountain #oregonhiking
By far the best state park in our opinion to stay at on the southern Oregon coast. Not only do you get a mountain to climb on the coast that provides amazing views.. the campground itself has a trail system out to the black sand and colored pebble beach. There is a fresh river flowing into the ocean and the birds are endless soaring and bathing right at the river. We had an unforgettable week here as our home base as we beach hopped up and down the coast.

Icy mix and snow target Upper Midwest, New England into Wednesday
A springlike storm will continue to produce a swath of snow and ice over the northern tier of the northeastern United States into Wednesday.
Warmer air to the south will visit some locations only briefly and may fail to show in others over the region.
Several hours of ice or a wintry mix will occur from the central part of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan to much of upstate New York to central New England during Tuesday.
Motorists and pedestrians should use caution as some surfaces that appear wet may be icy.
A quick change to rain will occur over Michigan, the southern tier of New York and southern New England.
Farther north, enough snow will fall to make roads slippery from eastern North Dakota and northern and central Minnesota to northern Wisconsin, northern Michigan, northern New York state and northern New England.
In part of northern New York state and northern New England, snow will transition to an icy mix. The weight of the snow and ice could bring down some tree limbs and cause sporadic power outages.
Long stretches of Interstate 81, I-87, I-89, I-91, I-93 and I-95 will be slippery.
On Wednesday, the wintry conditions may linger in northern Maine, Quebec and New Brunswick.
An outbreak of severe weather has spawned several damaging tornadoes across the Deep South Tuesday morning.
A state of emergency was declared in Louisiana by Governor John Edwards on Tuesday afternoon after severe storms moved through the Ascension, Livingston, Orleans, St. James, St. Tammany and Tangipahoa Parishes.
Dozens of injuries have been reported across the region, but no fatalities have been reported, according to the Associated Press.
Emergency management officials reported that two homes were destroyed near the town of Killian, Louisiana, located about 45 miles east of Baton Rouge. Two other homes were heavily damaged.
Elsewhere in Louisiana, tornadoes have been reported near Ponchatoula, Donaldsonville and New Orleans. There have been numerous reports of damage in east New Orleans.
Storm damage was also reported at NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility, located east of New Orleans. This is the facility where NASA is constructing the core stage of their upcoming Space Launch System rocket.
Two fairly warm and wet low pressure systems will bring heavy rain and snow to the West through Friday, renewing the threat for flooding and landslides in California.
Another atmospheric river event is bringing a prolonged period of moderate to heavy rain to portions of northern California on Tuesday. Flood watches have been posted for parts of the region. Any heavy rain on the saturated ground could lead to flooding.
This first system also has strong winds associated with it, prompting wind advisories to be issued across much of California.
Precipitation rates will be lower with this late-week system and snow levels will be slightly lower, reducing the risk of flooding. However, given the recent rainfall it will not take much additional rain to aggravate the flooding risk in smaller creeks.
After Tuesday's storm, much of central California will see a break in the heavy rain and gusty winds.
Rain will continue for parts of northern California, as well as into Oregon and western Washington.
Moderate to heavy snow will fall in central and eastern Washington, as well as into portions of northern Idaho, western Montana and northwestern Wyoming. Some freezing rain is also possible in parts of Oregon and Washington.
The next round of moderate rainfall will spread into central California, with rain in much of the Pacific Northwest, as well.
Snow will fall at elevations above 6,500 feet in parts of the Sierra, as this sytem will be a little colder. Snow levels will be around 3,000 feet in the Washington Cascades.
Some ice accumulation is expected in portions of Oregon and Washington, especially in the western Columbia Gorge.
Rain will begin to develop in southern California Thursday night.
Rain is likely along the West coast from southern California to western Washington.
A few thunderstorms are also possible in northern and central California.
Snow levels are expected to dip below 5,000 feet in some areas of the Sierra by Friday evening.
Snow will also fall in the Cascades through Friday night.

New London, Connecticut
1997
Susette (Suzette) Kelo drives by a run down house along the Thames (Tames) River that has been for sale for awhile. Even though the house is run down, she falls in love with it and buys it. She spends months completely renovating the 107-year old Victorian-style cottage, painting it pink. The house had a great view of the water, and was in a working-class neighborhood called Fort Trumbull. Unfortunately, the neighborhood had been in decline for years, as there were few decent paying jobs nearby. But Susette didn’t care. She loved her little pink house and its view of the harbor. She soon met a dude named Tim LeBlanc, who helped her do exterior work on the house. Eventually the two would get married and live there together.
But then, in January 1998, real estate agents began knocking on her door, offering lots of money to buy her house on behalf of “an unnamed buyer.” Kelo was suspicious, and turned down all offers. However, agents began to tell her if she didn’t sell her house, she would be forced out of her home by the city due to something called “eminent domain.” Eminent domain, you say? What the heck is that?
Eminent domain is the right for a government to just take private property for public use. In other words, if the government thinks it is in the best interest of all its citizens, it can kick you out of your house. Both the Takings Clause of the Fifth Amendment and the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution say the government can use eminent domain, but it just requires “just compensation.”
Susette Kelo didn’t care how much money New London was offering her. She loved her little pink house, and wasn’t going anywhere. Neither were 14 other Fort Trumbull residents. They decided to fight. Wait a second, why was New London trying to kick them out?
Well Pfizer, a multinational pharmaceutical corporation, was opening a new facility in New London, right next to the Fort Trumbull neighborhood. Part of the deal were plans to “fix up” Fort Trumbull, including building a new hotel, conference center, and fancy housing for the scientists working at Pfizer. This would require major government help. $73 million in help. Yep, the state of Connecticut would pitch in $73 million to kick out the Fort Trumbull residents, demolish their homes, and update the area with new roads and utilities.
Once Kelo and the other Fort Trumbull residents who didn’t want to leave their homes found out about this, they sued the city. Meanwhile, an organization called the New London Development Corporation, or NLDC, was already demolishing homes. By the time of the trial, which went to the New London Superior Court in July 2001, the NLDC already had acquired around 80 buildings and destroyed most of them.

Sanibel Black Death Red Tide
Wherever you are in the United States, please SHARE this post with friends and your local news media. We must get the word out -- beyond Florida.
OK, WHAT AM I LOOKING AT IN THIS VIDEO?
For years, Lake Okeechobee has been an artificial holding tank for all the fresh water and toxins (phosphorus, nitrogen, chemical fertilizer nutrients, raw sewage, and mercury) that drain from the agricultural lands of central Florida. However, the water is no longer allowed to filter south to form the “River of Grass” that once fed the Everglades. Instead, it is kept bottled up by the Herbert Hoover Dike which encircles most of Lake O. When the levels get dangerously high and threaten to breach the levees, the Army Corp of Engineers mandates freshwater releases which are sent east down the St Lucie River and west down the Caloosahatchee.
The following video was taken on Sanibel Island on February 29th, 2016 where the Caloosahatchee dumps directly into the Gulf. It graphically exhibits the direct effect of the “Black Death” of the red tide. Here, the interaction of “fresh” water and toxic chemicals creates a hypoxic (no oxygen) zone, deadly to marine life -- from oyster and crabs, to fish, dolphins, and manatees. So, where is the “Old Florida” of our youth? For Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel and Captiva, and Pine Island, it appears to be gone. The sparkling clear turquoise waters are but a memory. Now the choking acrid stink of red tide catches in the throats of beach-goers while a graveyard of dead fish lies rotting along the water line. Recreational fishing boats either have no business, or return at sundown with no catch-of-the-day. Hotels and restaurants guests (booked in advance for 2015-16) now cancel plans to return next year. And everywhere tourists and snowbirds staring at the Black Death blurt out the obvious question, “What the hell is wrong with the water?”
If you live out-of-state or outside SW Florida you may ask – why have I never seen evidence of this before? Although Lake O releases have been happening for a very long time, until now they were reserved for wet season – the “off season” -- when it didn’t “show” to the outside world. But now, with the worst El Nino in recorded history and record amounts of unseasonal rainfall, the Army Corp of Engineers has had no choice but to release billions of gallons (DAILY) of the filthy black waters despite it being the height of tourist season. Yes, it is calamity, and more than anything, Floridians hate to expose the loss of traditional beauty that has always drawn tourism to the area. Therefore, the only way to bring pressure to bear on our State officials is to SHOW the world, in no uncertain terms, what is going on.
The Florida Water and Land Conservation Amendment was passed in 2014 (by a 75% majority of Florida voters), providing a solution by buying the “sugarlands” south of Lake O, creating a secondary reservoir (which would stop the discharges into the St Lucie and Caloosahatchee Rivers), cleansing the waters, and sending them south to provide water for south Florida and the Everglades Restoration. But, for some strange reason, the land deal with Big Sugar fell through, and the nearly half-billion dollars earmarked for this project appear to have gone astray. Is this a case of MISAPPROPRIATION OF FUNDS by high Florida State government officials? And if so, shouldn’t that carry a FELONY CONVICTION? You decide. But don’t take too long. “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” ~Edmund Burke~
PLEASE, CONTACT YOUR GOVERNOR, SENATORS, AND REPRESENTATIVES. CALL, EMAIL, WRITE LETTERS, ATTEND A PROTEST, AND REFUSE TO TOLERATE THIS OUTRAGE. BUY THE SUGARLANDS! SEND THE WATER SOUTH!
“NEVER DOUBT THAT A SMALL GROUP OF THOUGHTFUL, COMMITTED CITIZENS CAN CHANGE THE WORLD. INDEED, IT IS THE ONLY THING THAT EVER HAS.” MARGARET MEAD

M-116 (Michigan highway)
M-116 is a 7.018-mile-long state trunkline highway in the US state of Michigan that begins in Ludington at an intersection with US Highway 10 at James Street and Ludington Avenue. The road travels northward, much of it along the shore of Lake Michigan before reaching its terminus at the entrance to Ludington State Park. The roadway has been in the state highway system since the late 1920s. It has been realigned a few times, most recently in the late 1990s.
M-116 begins in Ludington at the intersection of James Street and Ludington Avenue. It is at this intersection where US 10 turns southward and heads to the Ludington–Manitowoc ferry docks. From here, M-116 continues westward along Ludington Avenue through a mixed commercial area for about one-half mile before turning north on Lakeshore Drive. The road continues as North Lakeshore Drive through resident areas and passes the Lakeview Cemetery. Before passing the Lincoln Hills Golf Club, M-116 crosses a narrow section of Lincoln Lake and then curves westward towards the shore of Lake Michigan as it approaches the state park. The route runs along the coast of Lake Michigan for the remainder of its route, through an area of sand dunes, until reaching its northern terminus at the entrance to Ludington State Park.
Ludington State Park is bound to the west by Lake Michigan, the north by sand dunes and to the east by Hamlin Lake. As such, M-116 provides the only road access to the park from the south. The park encompasses 5,300 acres offering biking, hiking, fishing, tubing, boating and ice skating in the winter. The park is also home to the 112-foot tall Big Sable Point Lighthouse, built in 1867, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The highway is maintained by the Michigan Department of Transportation, which is responsible for maintaining and constructing transportation infrastructure in the state, including highways. As part of this role, the department periodically conducts surveys on their highways to measure traffic volume. This is expressed in terms of average annual daily traffic, which is a measure of traffic volume for any average day of the year. In 2009, MDOT calculated that 7,377 vehicles used the southern section of M-116 daily near the US 10 junction. On the north end, only 859 vehicles used the roadway near the state park entrance each day. The highway has not been listed on the National Highway System, a network of roads important to the country's economy, defense, and mobility.
In December 2014, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder authorized a portion of the highway in Ludington State Park between Little River and Big Sable in Mason County to be named 'The Paul K. Butterfield II Memorial Highway', in honor of that Michigan State Police Trooper who was murdered during a traffic stop there in 2013. The ceremony to do so took place in early February 2015.
M-116 was first designated in May or June 1928 from the north city limit of Ludington north to the Sable River, but not all of it was built and open to traffic. It was extended southerly in 1931 into the city of Ludington to US 10. There was a new alignment closer to the lakeshore opened in early 1933. The northern end was extended in late 1935 to encompass the Big Sable River bridge. The last change to the routing was made in 1998 when US 10 was shifted to follow James Street instead of William Street to the car ferry docks. At that time, M-116 was extended east along Ludington Avenue to end at James Street.
