In the process, tours of the historic site were put on hold. But Tennessee Crossroads visited with the First Lady to see the finished project which will allow for even more visitors. The Illinois Governor's Mansion The Peoples House Re-Opening
The Illinois Governor's Mansion has been home to Illinois governors and their families since 1855. It is the third oldest continuously occupied governor’s mansion in the United States and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Over the years, Illinois governors have hosted U.S. presidents, ambassadors, and most importantly, generations of Illinois residents at the People’s House. The Mansion underwent a privately funded 3-year renovation and reopened as the People’s House on July 14, 2018.

American Artifacts Preview: James K. Polk Ancestral Home
The James K. Polk Ancestral Home in Columbia, Tennessee is the only surviving home except the White House in which the 11th president lived. Before serving as president, James K. Polk served as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, and as governor of Tennessee. He was president from 1845 to 1849, and died of cholera just three months after leaving the presidency.
John Holtzapple, director of the Polk Home, led this tour.
The Polk Home was one of the stops on a 10-day bus tour from Asheville, North Carolina to Austin, Texas led by historian and author Richard Norton Smith.
