Goyt Valley walk 11: Derbyshire Bridge
Autumn has arrived here in the Goyt Valley, and the leaves are starting to turn from rich greens to glorious golds.
This easy three mile circular walk starts from a small car park at Derbyshire Bridge, which is clearly signposted, about 4 miles west of Buxton, just down from the A537 Buxton to Macclesfield Road.
Passing along the old Buxton to Macclesfield road, it then crosses open moorland to reach the small packhorse bridge which once stood in the heart of the hamlet of Goyt's Bridge, before it vanished under the cold waters of Errwood Reservoir.
This is the eleventh walk in a series, all of which are featured on the companion website at goyt-valley.org.uk. Along with some wonderful old photos of this part of the valley before it was flooded.
Goyt Valley walk 6: Taxal Edge
An enjoyable six-mile circular walk from Errwood Reservoir in the Peak District , up and along Taxal Edge, with wonderful views across the picturesque Goyt Valley, between Buxton and Whaley Bridge, and returning past Fernilee Reservoir.
Goyt Valley walk 12: The Cromford & High Peak Railway
This 15 mile walk traces the northern section of the Cromford and High Peak Railway, from Burbage on the outskirts of Buxton, through the beautifully scenic Goyt Valley, to its end point at Whaley Bridge.
It's a fairly easy walk, and there are some excellent pubs and tea rooms in Whaley Bridge. The best way to return to Buxton is on the train. They run at regular, hourly intervals.
Some of the route is now on private land and inaccessible, so there are a few detours, including small sections beside the road. Some parts can also get overgrown in late Summer, so early Spring is perhaps a better time. But this was a perfect day.
The walk is the twelfth in a series - all of which are featured on the companion website at goyt-valley.org.uk.

Taxal Lodge | Whaley Bridge
Let’s Take a tour of Taxal lodge, Whaley Bridge.
This old home and school that is about 3 miles from my house and I’ve been visiting it on and off and filming in it for about 4 or 5 years. The heavy weather we have has started to slowly bring parts of the building down like entire room floors and stairwells it’s a pretty dark place with kids work scattered around the place even kids displays about depression, loneliness and nightmares. Being a school in the time of the 60s and 70s we now know child abuse went on and was unspoken by kids and teachers. People who attended the school report 30 to 40 years later of teachers slamming heads on desks, pulling hair and a teacher named Barry Bennell who sexually abused kids. he was a volunteer football coach and abused his victims after taking them to see Manchester United train and play at Old Trafford.
was built in 1904 and was the home of Lt. Col. H. Jodrell school in various guises for children for the Local Education Authority. This Lodge replaced an earlier T. Lodge originally built further up the valley. It was a mixed boys/girls school for disruptive or emotionally disturbed children who stayed at the school during the week and were allowed home at the weekend (if they had one).
It is a very freaky place that starts to play on your mind while you walk around its worth a visit but the floors and the building is very unsafe (as you can see)

Dangerous drive in the snow
Started out safe to drive to Whaley Bridge from Macclesfield, but the weather soon changed, and we got caught up in the beast from the east.
We spotted that the road ahead had become blocked, and we managed to turnaround and dive back safe and sound.
28th February 2018 and the UK was suffering some tricky conditions.

ABANDONED TAXAL LODGE SCHOOL
Taxal lodge was built in 1904 and was the home of Lt. Col. H. Ramsden Jodrell, Who died in 1950. The lodge then became a Special School, specifically for disruptive and emotionally disturbed children. This Lodge replaced an earlier Taxal Lodge originally built further up the valley on the site it is believed,of the former Overton Hall which is now Overton Farm bearing the date 1810.
The current Taxal Lodge closed in 2005 and has also be vacant for many years and has now become vandalized and neglected.

A Ride in the Peak District
This is the A5004 from Buxton to Whaley Bridge in the Peak District, Derbyshire. It's just an example of the sorts of roads there are in the area - a veritable bikers paradise. As you can see, there's not a huge amount of traffic about, though it tends to get busier during August.

2 Whaley Bridge Fernilee Resevoir
A walk through Lyme Park to the Bowstones. A great walk to the top of Cheshire with great views
An amazing walk that I only discovered about 5 years ago. It's a really well marked out path and you really can take all the family on it. Just don't rush. No need! However it's also a great training walk as you can use it all year as I did to get some legs if you're approaching a bigger target. But most of all it's great! I really hope you enjoy the film as like many I looked up at the place every day but never realised how amazing it was. The folks there do a brilliant job to keep the place the way it is so I have the privilege to go there. Well done to all. It's massively appreciated by many. They do now charge at Nelson Pit car park. If you enjoyed this please check out my UK walking films playlist
