The beautiful bells of St George's Basilica in the city of Rabat on the island of Gozo in Malta. In this basilica you can find 5 bells cast by Prospero Barigozzi in 1925. In Malta bellringing is a major part of the religious traditions and are rung on solemn feasts of the Liturgical calendar. In Malta traditionally bells are not swinging but rung manually with by swinging the clapper to both sides of the bell.

We cross from Malta to its sister island of Gozo by car ferry for a tour of the island’s ancient citadel (Ċitadella) in the capital city of Victoria (Rabat)[3:47]. We walk along the entire length of the walls around the citadel and enjoy the amazing views on this sunny spring morning. It would be a good idea to start with a visit to the Cittadella's Visitor Centre[4:22] to learn about some of its history and that of Gozo. On this video we visit some of the other attractions such as medieval walls, St. Barbara’s Chapel[10:26], St. Joseph’s Chapel[19:18], the medieval archway[19:28], sally ports[9:23] and [21:57], the ditch[22:45] and the Cathedral of the Assumption, with its trompe-l'œil painting that gives the impression of a dome on the flat ceiling[21:00]. We also enter two of the three large grain silos[13:00] that were cut in the early 1600s and then converted into water cisterns in the nineteenth century. Access to the silos is through the rock-cut tunnel that leads down to the battery located north of St. John's Bastion.

Victoria & Cittadella

All roads in Gozo lead to Rabat, also known as Victoria. The Citadel is visible from almost all the Island, rising steeply above the surrounding countryside.

The Citadel in Gozo owes its roots to the late medieval era, but the hill has been settled since Neolithic times. For centuries, the Citadel served as a sanctuary from attack by Barbary corsairs and Saracens. At several times during Gozo's history, these raiders took its population into slavery.

After the Great Siege of 1565, the Knights set about re-fortifying the Citadel to provide refuge and defence against further attack. Until 1637, the Gozitan population was required by law to spend their nights within the Citadel for their own safety. In later, more peaceful times, this restriction was lifted and people settled below its walls, creating the prosperous town of Rabat, now known as Victoria.

Victoria is not just the geographic heart of Gozo, it is also the centre of everyday activity. It manages to combine the bustle of its market and shops with a relaxed and sociable atmosphere. It is a great place to watch the Islanders go about their day, especially when the main market square, It-Tokk, comes to life.

The town also has a thriving cultural life all its own, with some surprising attractions ranging from opera to horse races in the main street on festa day.
