The Gozo Museum of Archaeology is a museum in the Cittadella of Victoria in Gozo, Malta.The museum of was opened in 1960 as the first public museum in Gozo and was known as the Gozo Museum.The museum was redesigned and reopened in 1986 as the Archaeology Museum of Gozo.Today it is known as the Gozo Museum of Archaeology or the National Museum of Archaeology.

ARCHAEOLOGY IN MALTA & GOZO
The sheer number of archaeological sites on the Maltese Islands sets their history apart from that of other Mediterranean destinations.
There are megalithic monuments, Bronze Age dolmens, Punic tombs, remains of Roman Villas and traces of prehistoric man, which defy explanation, such as the mysterious 'cart tracks'. For three millennia, from around 5200 B.C., the archipelago was home to a unique, temple-building civilisation. Malta and Gozo's temples are thought to be the oldest free-standing buildings known to man.
One site above all others is special to Malta - the Hypogeum, a labyrinth of underground chambers probably used as both a burial site and a temple. The Islands' temples qualify as UNESCO World Heritage Sites and are open to the public.

Right next to the Duke Shopping Centre these delightful gardens are beautifully maintained and a lovely way to while away an hour or so. Some lovely statues and some impressive plants and trees, some of which, were planted over 100 years ago. A lot of thought has gone into the use of space and colour in this garden and the centrepiece bridge is lovely.

With only a few families living within the Citadel walls, and the magnificent baroque Cathedral of Gozo, the Gozitan Law Courts and the Bishop's Palace at the piazza, this place will take you back in time and helps you imagine of how live was back in the days.
There's a visitors' Centre, the Cathedral Museum, the Museum of Archaeology, the Folklore Museum, the Gozo Nature Museum, the Old Prison, the Old Gunpowder Magazine, the Grain Silos, the Battery and the World War II Shelter. So if you're into history, there's a lot to see.
Just walk in the Citadel's narrow streets, and appreciate the calmness it is surrounded by.

Malta Xlendi Shipwreck
XLENDI SHIPWRECK SURVEY (2001)
In July 2001 ProMare conducted an ROV survey in Malta in cooperation with INA (Institute of Nautical Archaeology), and the Malta National Museum of Archaeology. INA began a systematic survey of the Maltese archipelago in the fall of 1999, under the direction of Ayse Atauz. However, after two years of investigations in Malta, with no shipwrecks discovered in shallow water it became obvious that possible shipwrecks would be situated in relatively deep water off the coast and out of reach of conventional divers. The work in 2001 constituted the first deep water survey in Malta.
A scatter of hundreds of amphoras was located and surveyed at a depth of 100-120 meters outside the ancient harbor of Xlendi on the island of Gozo, approximately 1 mile off the coast and covering an area of 100 by 400 meters. The majority of the amphoras date from the 3rd century BC and provide the first archaeological evidence about ongoing trade during the Punic Wars between Rome and Carthage.
Punic settlements on Gozo indicate that Xlendi was the only sheltered anchorage on Gozo and along the western Maltese archipelago in antiquity. The multiplicity of amphoras and other ceramic artifacts at the site indicate that ships headed for the Xlendi bay were caught in the storm or otherwise wrecked; it should be noted that the estimated size of the contemporary Gozitan population makes the island an unlikely final destination.

Ħaġar Qim | The Mystery of Malta's Origins & Its Hidden Geometry & Astronomy | Megalithomania
Explore ancient Malta and Gozo in March 2020 with Megalithomania. Register here: An exploration of one of Malta's most important megalithic temples. Ħaġar Qim was built in the Ġgantija phase (3600-3200 BC) but new research could push the dates back much further. V. Gordon Childe, Professor of Prehistoric European Archeology and director of the Institute of Archaeology in the University of London from 1946-1957 visited Ħaġar Qim. He wrote, I have been visiting the prehistoric ruins all round the Mediterranean, from Mesopotamia to Egypt, Greece and Switzerland, but I have nowhere seen a place as old as this one. It has a summer solstice alignment, was a goddess worshipping site and is the sister site to Mnajdra, that is aligned to the Equinox.

After being collected at the Mgarr Ferry Terminal from Malta we travelled through Victoria the Capital of Gozo to Xewkija where my ebike and guide awaited to take me on an amazing leisurely journey for a 20 mile ride through glorious countryside, clifftops, beaches and villages.
We headed North East towards Xaghra but on the outskirts of town we turned down a narrow country lane which we followed through small farms for 2 miles before heading back to the main road. We could have rode on to Ramla Bay and Ramla beach to visit the Calypso Cave but instead we skirted the eastern boundary of Xaghra Northwards for 3 miles to Marsalforn, all the while stopping to take photos of all the beauty that is Gozo.
At Marsalforn we stopped to buy a packed lunch and water before pushing on for just another mile to the Salt Pans where we stumbled upon a promotion video being recorded for Red Bull by one of their Pro cycling stunt men.
Another mile along the cliff tops to Reqqa Point and Billinghurst Cavern, past Wied il-Ghasri to Wied ll-Mielah before heading for the Crafts Village of Għarb.
Gozo is famous for granite carving, silver filigree and lace, hand-blown glassware and honey which can all be seen here in Gharb being crafted by skilled locals who will be happy to sell you their unique wares.
But that will have to wait for another day, as we turned sharply Eastwards to visit the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Ta' Pinu, a Roman Catholic minor basilica and national shrine located close by.
The church is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of Ta' Pinu and is the only place where we met with a small group of tourists come to visit this site.
Across the road is a long track leading up to the shrine from farmland in the valley with stations of the cross carved in marble.
After a stop here for more photographs, we cycled on through Ghasri with church domes pointing to the sky over every valley, back towards Victoria, passing the Gozo Folklore Museum, the old prison, Gozo Museum of Archeology, the Opera House, St.Georges Basilica through the very heart of Victoria St.Francis Square to the South coast at Mgarr ix-Xini with amazing views of the secluded bay.
From Mgarr ix-Xini it was Northwards again for the last 4 miles through Tingi and Batista with it’s rotunda of St.John Baptist Church to our start and finish point at Xewkija.
This cycle ride was the most picturesque, leisurely cycle ride I’ve ever done in my life, and I never wanted it to end. There are so many alternative cycle routes to take on the Island of Gozo, and already I’ve mapped out a couple which I’ll do when I next return to Gozo in a few months time.
This ebike Ride will take me back through San Lawrenze and Blue Hole to Dweirja Bay and the Inland Sea Dive-site to take a boat trip from the Inland Sea and dive centre, through and under the cliffs out into the open sea to view where the Azure Window stood until recently.
Follow the coast down from here past Dwejra Bay, Fungus Rock, Wardija Punic Temple, SAN Raflu Lake to picturesque Xlendi Bay with a visit to Xlendi Tower and return to Xewkija and Victoria through the farms of Munxar.
There are just so many routes to safely ride cycles either off road or even on road, or you could just as well hire a Segway tour and pretty much do just the same mileage.
Of course if neither of these activities is for you, these cycle and Segway routes can just as easily be done by walking, there’s a bus route to many parts of Gozo to get you to the start point or from the finish point of your tour.

When joining the bus at Mgarr Harbour, both bus lines either the Red Bus or the Green Bus travel direct to Xewkija, one of the most picturesque villages in Gozo.
You'll be able to see the incredible Rotunda of Xewkija from far away, which is also known as the Church of Saint John the Baptist, built in the late 17th century.
Hop off at Bus Stop 3 to visit Savina Creativity at the Magro Food Village.
Walkers can hop off at Bus Stop 4 to complete the trail from Victoria all the way to Dwejra Heritage Park.
Ta Dbiegi is Bus Stop 5, a place rich with craft and glass shops.
The Museum of Archaeology is located at Bus Stop 10 to learn about the history of this city's lifestyle, religion and culture.

Malta is an archipelago in the central Mediterranean between Sicily and the North African coast. It's a nation known for historic sites related to a succession of rulers including the Romans, Moors, Knights of Saint John, French and British. It has numerous fortresses, megalithic temples and the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, a subterranean complex of halls and burial chambers dating to circa 4000 B.C.
St. Julian’s is a seaside town in Malta. It’s known for beaches like Balluta Bay, a rocky stretch with a promenade and restaurants. Bars and nightclubs line the streets of Paceville, an area south of St. George’s Bay Beach. Spinola Bay has traditional fishing boats, plus Spinola Palace, a baroque mansion with a carved clock centrepiece on its facade. Portomaso Bay is home to a marina and luxury boutiques.
Valletta (or Il-Belt) is the tiny capital of the Mediterranean island nation of Malta. The walled city was established in the 1500s on a peninsula by the Knights of St. John, a Roman Catholic order. It’s known for museums, palaces and grand churches. Baroque landmarks include St. John’s Co-Cathedral, whose opulent interior is home to the Caravaggio masterpiece The Beheading of Saint John.
Terraced Barrakka Gardens offers views over the Grand Harbour and the refurbished Vittoriosa waterfront of Birgu. Marsaxlokk is a small, traditional fishing village in the South Eastern Region of Malta. It has a harbour, and is a tourist attraction known for its views, fishermen and history. As at March 2014, the village had a population of 3,534. The village is also known for the Marsaxlokk Market, which is mainly a large fish market which takes place along the seafront on Sundays, and a tourist market during all other days of the week.
Gozo is an island in the Mediterranean Sea, one of 21 that make up the Maltese archipelago.
