GRABEN, VIENNA - travel shorts
The Graben (German: Trench) is one of the most famous streets in Vienna's first district, the city centre. It begins at Stock-im-Eisen-Platz next to the Palais Equitable and ends at the junction of Kohlmarkt and Tuchlauben. Another street in the first district is called Tiefer Graben (deep ditch). It is crossed by Wipplinger Straße by means of the Hohe Brücke, a bridge about ten metres above street level.

We stayed for 4 nights at the Hotel Graben.... right in the city centre.
Really beautiful City....... lots of pedestrian areas and fairly compact. Lots of amazing buildings in easy walking distance. Spoilt for choice with regard to restaurants and bars. Public transport is plentiful and cheap.... we purchased a 3 day pass. Use the CAT (City Airport Train) to get in the city centre. 21 euros each return (Return within 30 days) only takes 16 mins.
Hotel Graben is great, Has a restaurant but no bar. Breakfast was excellent.
We ate at the Chattanooga twice.... just over the road. An Irish Pub one night and Hungarian (ilona stueberl) on the last night.
The Xmas markets are great .... we visited 4 of them. Linda... who had a new knee earlier this year walked to all of them !!

Graben and Kärner Strasse are the main shopping streets in the old part of Vienna. They meet at Stephanplatz (St Stephen cathedral square). Along these streets there are are imposing buildings from the last quarter of the 19th century. Peterkirche at the Graben is one of the most beautiful baroque churches in Vienna. In the mmiddel of the Graben is the Pestsäule, a baroque column from 1693.

STEPHANSDOM und der ÄLTESTE TEIL von WIEN
Die Neue Wiener U-bahn führt direkt unter den Stephansplatz.
Beim U-Bahnbau wurde eine alte frühmittelalterliche Kapelle freigelegt, welche unter Glas in der U-bahnstation besichtigbar ist.
Wiens Wahrzeichen ist wohl der Stephansdom, in dieser Form aus dem 12. JH.
Das Bauwerk ist 107 Meter lang und 34 Meter breit. Der Dom ist eines der wichtigsten gotischen Bauwerke Österreichs. Teile des spätromanischen Vorgängerbaues von 1230/40 sind noch erhalten und bilden die spätromanische Westfassade, flankiert von den beiden Heidentürmen, die etwa 65 Meter hoch sind. Insgesamt besitzt der Stephansdom vier Türme: Der höchste ist der Südturm mit 136,4 Meter, der Nordturm wurde nicht fertiggestellt und ist misst 68 Meter, die Turmhaube stammt von der Renaissance. Hier ist die berühmte Glocke die Pummerin untergebracht (größte freischwingende Glocke, gegossen aus den Kanonenkugeln der Türkenbelagerung 1683, - 20 Tonnen).-
Der südliche Hochturm von St. Stephan ist eine der monumentalsten Bau-Lösungen, 1359-1433, des Mittelalters. Er verbindet sich n i c h t mit dem Kirchenbau, wie bei den meisten anderen gotische Kathedralen.)
Das Innere des Stephansdomes ist spätgotisch, die Altäre wurden im 16. JH barockisiert. (Außer dem spätgotischen Wiener Neustädter Flügel-Altar, welcher ursprünglich in Wiener Neustadt stand.)
Der Graben ist ein Straßenzug oder auch ein Platz, mit der barocken Dreifaltigkeitssäule (als Danksagung dem Ende der Pestepidemie 1679), gestiftet v.
Kaiser Leopold I. (Bildhauer Burnacini: Dreifaltigkeit über d. Wolkenpyramide mit Engelsfiguren, vor der der Kaiser Leopold kniet.)
Die Peterskirche seitlich am Graben ist die älteste Kirche Wiens: die Fundamente gehen bis in die Spätantike zurück. Sie entstand im 4. Jahrhundert. (In dem Kasernengebäude des römischen Lagers Vindobona, das zu einer basilikalen Saalkirche umgebaut wurde).- Später gotisiert, brannte sie 1661 ab und wurde 1701 auf Initiative Kaiser Leopolds I. barock neu errichtet.
Die Wiener Hofburg geht auf das Mittelalter zurück und hat mit der Vergrößerung des Reiches auch zahllose Anbauten des jeweiligen Jahrhunderts und deren
Baustile. Das Michaeler Tor mit der 50 Meter hohen Kuppel war der vorletzte Teil, aus dem 18. JH., nach Plänen von Fischer von Erlach. (Unter Kaiser Franz Josef wurde dann schließlich noch ein mächtiger Bau getätigt.(Richtung Ringstraße, nach Schleifung der Wiener Stadtmauer).-
Der Hohe Markt ist der älteste Marktplatz aus dem Mittelalter, dort war auch das Gerichtsgebäude und der Pranger.
Unter Joseph I.wurde hier der sogenannte Josefsbrunnen v. Fischer von Erlach, 1706 errichtet. Voller Symbolik stellt er die Heilige Familie Jesu dar.
Die Anker-Uhr stammt aus späterer Zeit (1911) und ist ein Publikumsmagnet.
