Gräfenstein Castle
Gräfenstein Castle (German: Burg Gräfenstein) is a 12th century castle, near the village of Merzalben in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, that sits high atop the canopy of the Palatine Forest. It is built on a rock plateau 12 metres (39 ft) high at an elevation of 447 metres (1,467 ft) above sea level. Gräfenstein is one of the most important, Hohenstaufen era castles in Rhineland-Palatinate. It is about 80 metres (260 ft) long and about 60 metres (200 ft) wide. The building's highlight is the peculiar seven-sided tower.

The Cantigas de Santa Maria (Canticles of Holy Mary) are 420 poems with musical notation, written in the Medieval Galician language during the reign of Alfonso X El Sabio (1221–1284) and often attributed to him.

We stopped just outside of Merzalben in the Rheinland-Palatinate. This castle, built at the end of the 12th century, was considered the jewel of the Hohenstaufen Dynasty and Grafenstein didn't disappoint- another great castle in germany
Gräfenstein Castle
Gräfenstein castle is situated in the midst of the Pfälzer Wald (palatinate forest) in southwest Germany. It was built in the 12th century, destroyed and re-built on several occasions, and eventually abandonded in the 17th century.

Often called Merzalber Schloss, this ruined rock #castle was built by Saarbrücken counts who built it to replace their lost fortress. Earliest records mention this Gräfenstein castle in 1237. This castle passed between many families during many years of war and has been restored several times since 1900. It remains a very beautiful piece of European and Baden Württemberg #Germany history. #travel

TRIO CUM LAUTE perform Ai Vis Lo Lop (also spelled Ai Vist Lo Lop on occasion), an old Occitan children song, at the Mittelalterspektakel at Castle Gräfenstein near the village of Merzalben (Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany) on August 07, 2015.
Using a Sackpfeife (bagpipe) and an instrument resembling a lute or guitar zither (I'm no expert at this), the German duo (which calls itself trio because occasionally they perform with a third member) sing this medieval song in the original Occitan language. Occitan is a medieval language that was widely spoken in the historical region of Occitania. This cultural area roughly encompasses the southern half of France, as well as Monaco and smaller parts of Italy and northern Spain. The modern language most closely resembling medieval Occitan today is the Spanish Catalan dialect.
The song title Ai Vis Lo Lop literally means I saw the wolf.
Some sources believe that the wolf, the fox and the hare (or weasel) mentioned in the song (see lyrics below) represented the King, Lord and Church, all authorities who collected taxes - leaving nothing for the peasants... .

Oswald von Wolkenstein was a poet, composer and diplomat who lived during the late 14th and early 15th century AD. The song was composed and is sung here in Middle High German.
