Margaret Grafton - Textile Artist and Weaver
Film circa 1963-4 of Australian artist-weaver Margaret Grafton working on a tapestry for the Tocal Agricultural College, near Maitland NSW.
The tapestry was commissioned by Australian architect Philip Cox for the College's chapel alter.
This was the first Australian tapestry to be commissioned by an architect for a site specific project and was instrumental in establishing the incorporation of art works into large scale projects as common practise.
The tapestry depicts Isaiah’s vision of peace (‘wolves and sheep shall live together in peace, and leopards will lie down with young goats. Calves and lion cubs will feed together, and little children will take care of them’, Isaiah Chapter 11 verse 6 GNB).
The image was created with hand-spun Australian wool treated with natural dyes of red cochineal and onionskins (amongst others) and took 18 months to complete.
Of the completed work, Philip Cox later said I believe many would argue... the tapestry is almost a 'Bayeux' of its kind.
The tapestry is listed on the NSW State Heritage Register. The display area within the chapel alter was specifically designed and built for the tapestry, thus successfully integrating the disciplines of tapestry and architecture.
Margaret Grafton was an Australian textile artist. Born in the UK and trained in painting and drawing, she retrained as a textile artist in the mid-1950s opening a tapestry studio soon after. Over a 50 year career she created a number of highly innovative weavings, tapestries and textile-based artworks for private collections and public buildings.
Twenty-nine commission were made for places such as the Federal Court, NSW Parliament, St Vincent's Hospital and Australian Jewish Museum and other public and private buildings.
Of one of Grafton's Federal Court court commissions - a tapestry that extensively incorporated aluminium in its weave - curator and art historian Daniel Thomas wrote: “Fantastic, the first silver tapestry I know of anywhere ... the silver lightness of the weaving emanates beneficent friendliness, suitably embodying the institute of law and justice”.
A personal letter of praise for another Federal Court commission followed from Justice William Dean (later Sir William Dean, Governor General of Australia) who wrote how it complimented the court and ...is a work of both beauty and integrity”.
Grafton's studio work was exhibited in the Art Gallery of New South Wales Traveling Exhibition (1969), Central St Gallery (1970) and other galleries and can be found in the National Gallery of Australia, state-based galleries and private collections.

A rural town transformed through art. The Creating Coonalpyn silo mural story.
Watch the remarkable story of how South Australia’s biggest art canvas has transformed the rural town of Coonalpyn in the State’s Coorong region. This short documentary following the journey of the Creating Coonalpyn project will give you hope and renewed optimism, that in the face of rural decline, small communities can survive and thrive. This documentary tracks the work of world-famous mural artist Guido van Helten as he paints the giant 30-metre high Coonalpyn Viterra Silos. It shows us how the support of the Coorong District Council, Country Arts SA (with the Australian Government’s Regional Arts Fund) community-led Coonalpyn Arts Group, local families and business have helped to shape the lives of all those people living in the district – especially it’s youngest residents who are now looking towards a brighter future, through a much more creative lens.
The small town of Coonalpyn is based along the Dukes Highway in South Australia – a 90-minute drive from Adelaide – and in recent months has become one of the most photographed in the nation. Take a drive next time you're in SA, and we promise you won’t be disappointed as you take in the six Creating Coonalpyn arts projects located around the township (including the flagship silo mural) adding colour and intrigue to the drive of thousands of travellers each day.
A special mention must again be given to Country Arts SA (CASA) and the Australian Government’s Regional Arts Fund (RAF) which have partnered with the Council to drive many of the Creating Coonalpyn projects in 2016-17.
Cobargo New South Walse Australia, Country town
Cobargo is a village in the south-east area of the state of New South Wales in Australia in Bega Valley Shire. In 2011, Cobargo had a population of 638 people. It is 386 km south of Sydney on the Princes Highway between Narooma and Bega.
Cobargo's streetscape features many turn of the century buildings. It has developed in the last decade from a sleepy village into a popular tourist destination. Its attractions include olden-style stores, leather craftworks, potteries, an iron forge, art galleries, tea rooms and antique shops. Wadbilliga National Park is 20 km west of Cobargo.
The name Cobargo may have originated from the local Indigenous Australian word 'cubago' which some sources claim was used to describe nearby Mount Gulaga.

Video concept and performance by Theresa Edwina Brook and Jade Dewi Tyas Tunggal
Sparked by the question, ‘what separates us from understanding our wilderness?’
we aimed to experience connection by immersing our minds, hearts, and guts in the unique Headwaters environments.
Sound, touch, our feeling bodies, and emotion revealed a lamentation for the loss of cultural wisdom.
Working in the dance studio we explored the edge of transformation as a place of risk and aliveness.
Choreographing complex improvisations, inspired by women's domestic work, pushed us to examine the dynamics and subjective forms of endurance, radiance, and transportation.
Returning to the Headwaters we embodied our studio research in the mountain river landscape.
