Galaxias in the Grampians National Park: Creek habitat
This small rocky creek in the Grampians provides habitat for Galaxias. The video explores about 50m of the creek and shows some of the microhabitats in this underwater world. A little bridge crosses this creek along a popular walking track, but the views in the video are very different to those seen above the water. The reds and yellow colours in the video are due to tannins in the water, the intensity of the colour depending on factors such as water depth and light.
Galaxias have suffered large declines in their populations since the introduction of many feral fish species, particularly trout. Some populations only manage to exist in the very upper reaches of waterways where trout have failed to penetrate.
Best watched in HD 720p in full screen.
