Diamonds - the lustre of love
(11 Feb 2018) LEAD-IN
Diamonds are popular gifts at Valentine's Day and Antwerp's world famous Diamond District is preparing for a busy period.
Those in the know say that trends for engagement rings are set by royal romances and social media stars.
STORYLINE
The Belgian city of Antwerp is celebrated for its jewellery district where you can find some of the finest quality diamonds on the market.
Antwerp is the world's most important diamond trading centre with a 570-year-old tradition.
Traders, rough diamond dealers and producers, manufacturers, polished diamond wholesalers and jewellery shops all concentrate themselves in the city's Diamond District.
At the moment couples have a special reason to browse Antwerp's sparkling windows: Valentine's Day!
While many lovers will celebrate 14 February with a cosy dinner or a romantic holiday, others will opt for a classic diamond as a symbol of undying love.
Fanny Pisolati is a Sales and Public Relations Representative at Diamondland, one of Antwerp's largest diamond shops, and a certified retailer, specialising in both ready-made and custom-made jewellery.
Pisolati says that more than just following specific fashion trends, customers look for a Valentine's gift that would be unique and set them apart from the crowd.
So how about a rose featuring small diamonds resembling dew on petals?
This particular gift is called Antwerp Rose, it costs 300 Euros (367 US dollars) and is part of the Diamondland collection.
Pisolati says it will be a Valentine's favourite:
This is going to be famous with Valentine's (Day), that I know. Because it's a rose, so men they are always buying flowers with Valentine, and this is a rose with diamonds on it, so this is really exclusive to buy.
The Antwerp Rose is treated with a special process that allows it to keep its natural features for several years, say Rose d'Anvers, the Antwerp based company which created the product.
The small diamonds on it are shaped in the rose (or rosette) cut, one of the most brilliant and historic.
Once the petals eventually wear off, but the 1.25-1.35 millimetre (0.50 - 0.53 inch) diamonds can be rescued and find a new life in a piece of jewellery
You can use the stones to put into something that you have already, or make something new: a ring, earrings, adds Pisolati.
Diamondland have added a white gold and diamond ring to the Antwerp Rose for clients who wish to double-up their Valentine's surprise and offer a considerably more expensive present (6,500 Euros/ almost 8,000 US dollars).
Elsewhere in the Diamond District, jewellers at Baunat - an Antwerp-based online diamond jeweller – have other ideas for Valentine's Day.
Steven Boelens, who co-founded Baunat together with his business partner Stefaan Mouradian, says Valentine's presents tend to be generally simpler than engagement rings.
So a bracelet, rather than a ring, is one of the most common Valentine's alternatives, he says.
The average purchases for Valentine's (Day) are a bit more moderate than if you compare them with an engagement piece. What is today very fashionable is this small bracelet that you see, a very thin, small bracelet that can be combined together with other many other bracelets, Boelens explains.
Seventy per cent of Baunat's jewellery is sold online with the rest selling from the company's seven showrooms worldwide.
Cubic zirconia, is a common and relatively inexpensive diamond substitute.

Jewellers say European market falling behind Asia rapidly
LEADIN
Dealers say the European jewellery market is falling rapidly behind Asia.
Currently exhibitors and buyers are eyeing up a golden opportunity for a high return at the Hong Kong Jewellery Fair which runs for five days.
STORYLINE
From golden diamond earrings, necklaces, bangles and rings, this is the place where you can find the most dazzling gems and exclusive jewellery pieces.
The September Hong Kong Jewelry and Gem Fair is the largest event of its kind in the world.
Gemstones, diamonds, pearls and all sorts of fine finished jewelry are exhibited throughout the event at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
This year, more than 3,633 exhibitors from 48 countries and regions are participating.
Some of the finest jewellery costs more than a million US dollars. But this doesn't stop the buyers from purchasing.
Among the exhibitors is Alex Lau from a Hong Kong based company which specialises in colourful designs.
Lau says it is important to be aligned with the needs of customers: There are still buyers and people willing to spend money on jewellery. But the fact is, they now have a higher demand on quality than before. Because, perhaps, their spending power is not too great, they tend to demand a higher-end product .
In view of the global economic crisis, it's no wonder some buyers from abroad are concerned by the price tag for the pieces:
The biggest difference is, for Asians, they have a much higher demand on quality products and craftsmanship. For American customers, instead, they are more concerned about the prices, Lau says.
The fair attracts a number of first-time exhibitors from Europe keen to enter the Asian market.
Among them is Simona Pacifici from Italy. Some of our customers around the world, they are starting to tell us, that Italy is the third world. And also Europe is becoming the third world. It really, we understand what is going on. I mean, we really think that, in the next 10, 20 years, most of the financial power will come this part (Asia) of the world.
While the jewellery market in Asia is maturing, the designs remain fancy and creative. This is one of the reasons why Elizabeth Greav, an Australian buyer, insists on visiting this annual event , keen to pick up on the next hottest trend.
Well, the quality and the different designs. We really love the different designs. In Australia we can't get designs like we can in Hong Kong. So we make the trips specially to get some different ideas and jewelry for our clients.
The Fair is expected to attract more than 52-thousand visitors from around the world.
The exhibition runs 13 - 17 September.

Travel Antwerp, Belgium - Het Steen (Oldest Stone Structure in Antwerp)
Take a tour of Het Steen in Antwerp, Belgium -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
The Het Steen, which means the Stone in Dutch, is Antwerp's oldest structure.
This renowned castle was built in the early 13th century, during Belgium's Medieval Age.
The castle has had a long and varied history, changing functions and masters throughout the years.
The Het Steen has played the role of a fortress, a prison, and is currently a museum.
Although the castle was built for the Dukes of Antwerp, it spent more time housing prisoners.
High walls, turrets, towers, and pennants make the Het Steen a classic castle.
Today, it is home to Antwerp's museums of archaeology and maritime history.
