Almonte Mews - Almonte, Ontario, Canada
Almonte is a scenic mill town on the Canadian Mississippi River, about 40 minutes southwest of downtown Ottawa with a population of about 5,000. This quaint town is steeped in history and a walk down the main street feels like a step back in time.
The 19th century limestone mill buildings in the town have been re-purposed over the years as galleries, condos, restaurants and office space, while the main street offers boutiques, craft shops, galleries and antiques for tourists of all agesThere are also several first-class restaurants and a variety of inns and B&Bs, most located in historic structures along the river. Almonte is also home to some fascinating museums and hosts some excellent summer festivals. - parkviewhomes.info
A March Afternoon on the Mississippi River (Almonte, ON - 2016)
It has been an unseasonably warm March in eastern Ontario, Canada. The snow is melting and many streams and rivers are flowing heavily. The Mississippi River through downtown Almonte was no exception during my visit. I started at the eastern, or upper portion of the falls, working my way westward to the lower portion. There was very little snow or ice to be found along the banks of the river there.
The waterfall in the video is known as Grand Falls on the MIssissippi, which was receiving a typical high spring runoff, with very few rocks exposed. This is a stark contrast to what you can expect to see at low flow, in the summer and early fall. During the low flow, large mounts of rock are exposed throughout the upper portion. Due to the high flow, there was also a lot of mist that could be seen rising from the bottom of the upper portion of the falls.
This video was shot in mid-March, 2016.

Almonte and Pakenham Waterfalls: Time Lapse
This is a series of time lapses, showcasing several waterfalls in two Ottawa Valley towns, in Eastern Ontario. Most of the focus is on Almonte, the principal town in the municipality of Mississippi Mills in Lanark County. Pakenham is home to the waterfall in the final sequence and is located about 16 km north of Almonte. Both towns are west of Ottawa, Ontario and are located on Canada's own version of the Mississippi River, which forms a deep valley. Several waterfalls are located throughout the area, with some gently falling over limestone steps, while others cascade steeply through a gorge. All images were taken in August, 2014.
