The video contains scanned colour(mostly)prints, slides and digital photos, all edited into B&W photos on Apple Photos including some using the LightRoom (Lr)AP for iPhone. The portraits of David were taken by Margaret Rose, Bob Allen and 2 selfies. The very first photo in the video is a park in Brampton, Ontario during the fall of 1974, where he attended Sheridan College and was taken from his very first roll of B&W film for a photography project.
David J. Rowe Bio:
David grew up and worked most of his life in the small rural town of Dunnville, Ontario. The river ends at Port Maitland, 7 km downstream from the town and empties into Lake Erie which is part of the Great Lakes Region of Canada and USA.
In 1881, his family purchased several large islands lying just below the dam at Dunnville, located within Six Nations Historical Land Tract of the Grand River. After his family farmed the lowlands for many years, David’s father along with friends & family built a small “hamburger stand” in 1953 on one of the islands, historically known as Lumber Island ...
See “Lumber Island Memories - My Family’s History”
...that is part of and adjacent to the dam & weirs which diverted water into a 40 km feeder canal system built in the early 1800s by the “Welland Canal Company”.
Over time, the small burger stand became a very popular waterfront eatery and tourist attraction during the summer months. David’s father named it “Grand Island Bar-B-Q” where David worked during his summers. He also grew up in the family's small meat market & grocery store that operated in downtown Dunnville since the early 1920s.
This was David’s playground as a young boy for many seasons spending his free time fishing and exploring the shores of both the Grand River and Lake Erie that provided an abundance of habitat for flora and wildlife. David continued to developed his outdoors skills including camping, hiking and canoeing as a young scout, along with his schoolmates; travelling in and around the local and Northern Ontario Lakes, rivers and trails.
As David grew up he subscribed to an old and popular geographic magazine and was inspired by the stunning images and articles that explored strange and wonderful landscapes and peoples from around the world. These photographers ultimately motivated David to see the world.
After high school David was accepted into Sheridan College, Brampton Campus. He selected two electives including photography and a NAUI SCUBA course. It was here that the photo-bug finally bit David and he started to travel even more, taking photos with his first SLR - a Pentax “Spotmatic” camera including a Takumar 135 mm telephoto lens. After completing college he continued to travel while focusing on his photography abilities, spending more time advancing his knowledge in photographic methods and skills which included constructing a small colour printing lab in his parent’s basement.
During long hot summers working in the family seasonal restaurant, David would dream and plan his next adventures. After the business closed for the season, David would pack up his camera and travel for several weeks sometime months, mostly in the fall and the mid winters. Sometimes he would be joined with relatives or friends, sometimes he traveled alone. David also had an older brother who lived for many years in Southern California - a spring-board for many more of David’s travels to many parts of the globe.
David got a job as a photo assistant at a professional Toronto studio where he gained a wealth of experience in camera types and formats, shooting techniques including black & white darkroom processes and preparing simple to elaborate lighting for a variety of studio sets and location sites.
David treks included seeing Canada, USA, Caribbean Islands(Bahamas and Jamaica), Hawaiian Islands, South Pacific & Polynesian Islands(Tahiti, Moorea & Bora Bora), Australian Outback & Tasmania, New Zealand, England(Lake District) & Scotland, Europe, France, Switzerland, Germany, Russia(Belarus), Israel and Jordan(Petra). David also has hobbies including woodworking, biblical & ancient studies, survival/bush craft skills, fishing, boating, sailing, down-hill skiing and scuba diving.
You can also see some of David’s work featured on his profile page on the Canadian Geographic Photo Club website. Hi images are both in colour and black & white, taken over the years, adding more images periodically. See Link Here:
Currently David uses the DSLR Canon 80D, using 18-135 mm, 35 mm macro and 70 - 300 zoom lenses. David also captures images with his iPhones; lately using the Xs. David is still learning the new digital medium but would like go back sometime to using film as well. David hopes to share his photographic work with the Canadian Geographic readers while exploring and capturing Earth’s wonders in the Eternal Light.
