Sydney GPO tower demolition in 1942
This Post Office film shows clips of the Sydney GPO clock tower being demolished during World War II.
The tower was dismantled to minimise the risk of bomb damage and the loss of the city's telephone exchange. The film is now preserved in the National Archives' collection.

Wall Clock by Angelo Tornaghi of Sydney, Australia; circa 1885
ANGELO TORNAGHI
Superb wall clock with original painted dial signed A. Tornaghi, Sydney. Cedar case (crafted from now-protected Toona australis, the 'king' of cedar timbers), high quality brass and steel movement, with anchor escapement and steel-chained on brass fusee and precision pendulum. Case attached by timber pegs to the dial surround. This well maintained and regulated awesome clock achieves less than 20 to 60 seconds of inaccuracy per week, needing only micro-adjustments with the change of seasonal temperatures.
Angelo Tornaghi was born in Milan in 1824. He was a supporter of the campaigns of Garibaldi in 1848-49. He arrived in Australia in 1854, representing the firm of London instrument makers, Negretti and Zambra, to supervise installation of their equipment at Sydney's Observatory.
He then went into business in Sydney as a clock-maker and instrument-maker at Bridge Street and later George Street. He was soon established as a maker and importer of scientific instruments and was well known as a _quality_ clock maker and supplier. He produced & installed Little Brother, the 'smaller' external public street clock at the George Street end of the General Post Office (GPO) Sydney, among other renowned precision public clocks.
Today, Angelo Tornaghi's clocks are keenly prized by collectors of horology and Australiana alike.
He retained a connection with Sydney Observatory and was part of the observing team organised by HC Russell for the 1874 Transit of Venus.
Tornaghi was closely involved in the local Italian community. He was well known and respected in the wider community, serving two terms as Mayor of Hunters Hill. He died in 1906, however the business survived under management by his son.
(edit by Michael Chapman of an article in The Australian Antique Collector, 1983, Maguire, Roslyn, pp42-46).
This particular clock was purchased as a wedding anniversary present in the 1980s from an antique store located in the subway at Sydney's Town Hall Railway Station. It remains part of the family...
Melbourne's GPO Light Show Unveiled
Melbourne's GPO will be shining a whole new light on Melbourne. To celebrate the recent restoration works, beams of coloured light will be projected on the building to highlight it's majestic architectural features. The stunning stonework will be illuminated at each day after sundown.
Hundreds of lamps originally lit up MGPO in the 1950s. This time around, it will feature 2,900 LEDs, which will run on a fraction of the power. The permanent, green-friendly project will use around 725 watts in its entirety. This is less energy than it takes to power 15 household downlights.
Chief Post Office in Christchurch 1860 - 2016
My next Christchurch heritage series, focusses on the 1877 Post Office Building, unlike the Cathedral, this building has survived the quakes relatively unscathed, but is currently being mothballed and neglected by authorities. For 133 years, it spent being part of the focal points of Cathedral Square being used as a Post Office, Phone Exchange, Government Departments, Savings Funds, Tourist Offices, a Philatelic Bureau, a Coffee shop and Aquarium amongst others.
The building has survived 6 generations of Cantabrians and will last many more hopefully. Watch how it changes from a field of grass, to a solid Victorian building surrounded by shacks, then brick buildings, glass towers blocks and finally more glass
