Japan Trip: History, Rocks, Shrines and the Beach in Kumano City, Wakayama 14
Located 20 kilometers away from the Wakayama border, Kumano City is actually located in Mie Prefecture. Visitors may think Kumano City is the city side of the spiritual side of the Kumano region. However, Kumano City is not a big city, the population is only 20,000. However, it is well-known for its trails, rock formations and shrine.
Kumano City is located along the former Iseji pilgrimage route, the route which connected Kumano shrines with Ise Grand Shrine. However, currently only the isolated sections of the route have been preserved. Among them is the Matsumoto Pass trail in Kumano City. The preserved section of the trail is one kilometer long with the top elevation reaching about 100 meters.
Kumano City is known for unique rock formations along its coastline. A supposed dwelling of the demons is the Onigajo Rock (“oni” translates to demon). The Shishi Rock resembles a lion looking out to sea (“shishi” translates to lion). Both rock formations were named by their appearance.
About a kilometer south of Kumano's city center stands Hana no Iwaya Shrine. It is believed the grave of Izanami is located within this ancient shrine. Izanami is the deity who created the earth together with her husband Izanagi. This shrine’s foundation is considered to be older than even that of the three Kumano shrines. A unique rope festival is held at the shrine on February 2nd and October 2nd. A thick hemp rope stretches from the top of the cliff to the grove of trees below. During the festival, the rope is replaced. But first, the new rope is stretched along Route 42 and down the coast. At this time, flowers, sacred fans with the Japanese Hinomaru design are attached to the rope.
And within Kumano City is Tategaski, a large rock quay 100 meters high and a circumference of 600 meters. It is believed Emperor Jinmu landed on this rock on his way to conquest the East. Visitors may wish to take a scenic boat ride along the coast in viewing this historic rock.

Nachi Waterfalls (那智の滝), NachiKatsuura City, Wakayama Prefecture
Nachi Waterfalls (那智滝 or 那智の滝) are located in the NachiKatsuura city (那智勝浦). Nachi Katsuura belongs to sacred sites of the Kumano Sanzen and Kumano Kodo (熊野古道 ancient road) pilgrimage route. This Waterfalls and the worshiped Kami is associated with Nachi Taisha Grand Shrine, which is part of the Kumano Sanzen sacred sites of the Kii Peninsula.
Nachi Waterfalls is about 133 meters (400 feet) high. It is one of the highest waterfalls in Japan. The view of the waterfalls from the Seigantoji Temple precincts (from a mountain opposite) is a treat to watch.
If you are in Wakayama (和歌山), please make a trip to Nachi Katsuura (那智勝浦), you will not regret it.

Rock Garden at Kokawadera Temple (粉河寺庭園), Kinokawa City, Wakayama Prefecture
This is a short video of a very interesting rock garden at Kokawadara Temple (粉河寺庭園) I have visited in Wakayama Prefecture (和歌山県) in a city called Kinokawa (記の川市). I would say the video does not do a lot of justice to the visual aspect of this garden. I think it is far nicer to see this garden in person.

JR Nachi Station (JR那智駅), Nachi Katsuura City, Wakayama Prefecture
JR Nachi Station (JR那智駅) is a small station in Nachi Katsuura City and on the way to the Shingu City. JR Nachi Station also provides access to the Sacred Sites of Kii Peninsula in Kumano area. When I went to the station, it was temporarily abandoned because of the track damage caused by heavy floods in Wakayama. Nonetheless, the station was back in service few weeks after I left. There was a nice beach associated with an inlet of Pacific Ocean behind the station.

Wakayama Shingu City Oto Matsuri | JAPAN Forward
A team of roughly 2,000 men (referred to as noboriko) clad in white and sporting straw rope wrapped around their waists light pentagonal shaped torches with sacred fire in prayer for a good harvest and family safety. The view that unfolds as the men charge down from the shrine with torches in hand is as the lyrics of the Shingu-setsu song describe, like a flaming waterfall and winding fiery dragon. The festival is known as one of the most lively fire festivals in Japan. On the day of the festival, women are prohibited from the Kamikura-jinja Shrine grounds, but are able to watch the festivities from the path leading to the shrine.

Riding a Limited Express Train Ocean Arrow to Kii Katsuura, Wakayama Prefecture
Ocean Arrow limited express train runs from JR Kyoto Station to JR Shingu station in Wakayama Prefecture. The entire ride takes about 5 hours. There are Ocean Arrow trains run from Shin Osaka also, and their frequency is more than the trains from Kyoto. Kii Katsuura station is one stop before the JR Shingu station. Kii Katsuura is known for Nachi Katsuura town, Nachi Mountain Range, Nachi Waterfall and two great places of worship Kumano Nachi Grand Shrine and Seigantoji Temple. In other words it is a great place to visit.
This ride from Wakayama to Kii Katsuura, for most part is alongside the edge of the Wakayama Prefecture and facing the Pacific Ocean. So, the ride has a combination of rustic village, Kii Mountain range and the ocean views.
Along the ride, there is a place called Taiji, where the critically acclaimed and controversial documentary movie The Cove was made. You can see some of the inlets and ocean settings where the dolphin catching is done.
The ride from Wakayama to Kii Katsuura itself takes about two and half hours and this video is a condensed version of the ride.
Enjoy - and yes, visit Kii Katsuura, Nachi Katsuura Town and Wakayama City. They are just fantastic!!!
