WELCOME to TUNISIA - TOUR of the GREAT MOSQUE of KAIROUAN and SBEITLA ROMAN RUINS (vlog)
We are in Tunisia to explore two of the major architectural monuments, the Great Mosque of Kairouan and the Roman Ruins of Sbeitla.
Our first stop is Kairouan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and important pilgrimage destination. In fact, it is the 4th most holy destination in the Muslim faith for its architectural masterpiece, the Great Mosque of Kairouan which dates back to 670 AD, making it one of the oldest mosques. The walled medina is also famous for being the filming location of the 1981 film Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Next we visit a carpet shop where we explore the Berber and Tunisian carpets, a hand-made traditional craft in Tunisia.
Sbeitla (aka Sufetula and in Arabic سبيطلة ) is a city in north-central Tunisia where we find the best preserved Roman forum temples in Northern Africa. It was the entry point of the Muslim conquest of North Africa. The archeological site is massive and we explore the forum, baths, and theater.

Tunisia - The Great Mosque of Kairouan and The Mausoleum of Sida Sahib
Tunisia - The Great Mosque of Kairouan and The Mausoleum of Sida Sahib
The Great Mosque of Kairouan, also known as the Mosque of Uqba, is one of the most important mosques in Tunisia, situated in the UNESCO World Heritage town of Kairouan.
Established by the Arab general Uqba ibn Nafi in 670 AD (the year 50 according to the Islamic calendar) at the founding of the city of Kairouan, the mosque is spread over a surface area of 9,000 square metres and it is one of the oldest places of worship in the Islamic world, as well as a model for all later mosques in the Maghreb.
The Mausoleum of Sida Sahib
About 1km south-west of the Aghlabid Basins is the Zaouia of Sidi Sahab also known as the Barber's Mosque, a complex including a mausoleum and a medersa which was built between 1629 and 1692 over the tomb of one of Mohammed's companions who died in AD 685. According to legend Sidi Sahab, out of reverence for the Prophet, always carried a few hairs from his beard: hence the name of the Barber's Mosque.
The zaouia is notable for its magnificent decoration, much of which dates only from the 19th century. It is entered through a forecourt, on the left of which are the imam's lodgings, guest- rooms and ablution fountains. Opposite the entrance is the minaret. The forecourt also gives access to the medersa, laid out round a small courtyard, the prayer hall beyond it and (by way of a passage adjoining the minaret) another colonnaded courtyard, off which opens the tomb of Sidi Sahab (whose original name was Abu Djama el Balani). The Great Mosque of Kairouan (جامع القيروان الأكبر), also known as the Mosque of Uqba (Arabic: جامع عقبة), is one of the most important mosques in Tunisia, situated in the UNESCO World Heritage town of Kairouan.
Built by the Arab general Uqba ibn Nafi from 670 AD (the year 50 according to the Islamic calendar) at the founding of the city of Kairouan, the mosque is spread over a surface area of 9,000 square metres and it is one of the oldest places of worship in the Islamic world, as well as a model for all later mosques in the Maghreb. The Great Mosque of Kairouan is one of the most impressive and largest Islamic monuments in North Africa, its perimeter is almost equal to 405 metres (1,328 feet). This vast space contains a hypostyle prayer hall, a huge marble-paved courtyard and a massive square minaret. In addition to its spiritual prestige, the Mosque of Uqba is one of the masterpieces of both architecture and Islamic art.
Under the Aghlabids (9th century), huge works gave the mosque its present aspect. The fame of the Mosque of Uqba and of the other holy sites at Kairouan helped the city to develop and repopulate increasingly. The university, consisting of scholars who taught in the mosque, was a centre of education both in Islamic thought and in the secular sciences. Its role can be compared to that of the University of Paris in the Middle Ages. With the decline of the city of Kairouan from the mid 11th century, the centre of intellectual thought moved to the University of Ez-Zitouna in Tunis
