Jackson Hole #29 in World's Best Places to Visit
Sandwiched between Grand Teton National Park to the north and miles of national forest in every other direction, the Jackson Hole valley has remained relatively isolated from the burgeoning travel industry. Instead it has survived on local industries like logging, ranching and, during the 19th century, fur trading. But recently, Jackson Hole has encouraged the rise of tourism. Former blue-collar settlements like Jackson and Grand Teton now boast notable art and performance venues, and mega ski resorts have transformed the region into an up-and-coming winter wonderland. When planning an opulent getaway, many people don't give western Wyoming a thought. To those travelers, we say: Think again.
Sure, you won't encounter the glitz and glam of Aspen or Lake Tahoe, but the beauty and vastness of the Jackson Hole region has caught the attention of Hollywood celebs like Harrison Ford and politicos like former Vice President Dick Cheney. Yet, even with its fresh and luxurious upgrade, Jackson Hole remains first and foremost the heart of mountain country, with rugged trails and miles of open space that recall a time before the West was won.

Historic South Pass City and Carissa Mine – A Wyoming Ghost Town – near Lander, Wyoming
Historic South Pass City and Carissa Mine – A Wyoming Ghost Town – near Lander, Wyoming.
South Pass City sprang up when gold was discovered in the area in 1866. Up to three thousand people called this town home in the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming, approximately 35 miles south of Lander.
Unfortunately, major gold deposits were never found and by the mid 1870’s the town dwindled to just 100 people. Over the next century the town declined further until the last pioneer family moved in 1949. The town fell into disrepair until the end of the 20th century when efforts were taken to renew the community.
The Carissa Mine was the primary economic engine for South Pass City. In 1928 new money helped build a modern mill and support buildings but the precious metals were exhausted in a couple of decades. The gold mine and mill closed permanently in 1949.
The Friends of South Pass is a non-profit committed to preserving the rich history of South Pass City. They preserved more than 30 structures and the town is listed on the National Register of Historical Places.
The Friends of South Pass volunteer, host events & support the historic site financially, making sure South Pass City’s future is bright. An informative website is only a click away:

I set out to find if Jackson Hole, Wyoming has the best snowmobiling in the world. Sled head and snow machine buff Mike Halpin claims that it does. Mike is the owner of Lost Creek Ranch Lodge & Spa and he offers to take me on one of his favorite runs, a ten-mile spin to Granite Hot Springs. It's snowing hard when we start out, but soon clears to ice blue skies as we whiz past dogsledders and scenery that chews it is so dramatic. We slip into a little rip in the earth's crust that is the 104-degree hot springs, and soak away whatever residual blues came from beyond the blazing poetry of this place. At this moment it seems life beyond this valley is error. This is the place to be. This is montropolis.

Waterslide Fun - First and Last Time on the High Dive - Star Plunge, Thermopolis, WY
Located within Hot Springs state park are two indoor outdoor waterpark pools. Both are fed with the warm mineral water from the nearby springs, which helps them to maintain a water temperature of about 94 degrees. After a day at the Hot Springs State Park and the Wyoming State Bath House, we decided to visit the Star Plunge Hot Mineral Springs Pool. Star Plunge has 2 large pools, 3 waterslides, 2 hot tubs, 2 baby pools and a natural vapor cave all included in the price of admission. Be sure to bring your own towels and a swimming suit you don't mind having smell like sulfur (but they have those items available for purchase if you forget). The kids adored the water slides and we all had fun swimming in the wonderfully warm mineral water.
