Rathaus Aachen
In seinem heutigen Erscheinungsbild ist das Aachener Rathaus ein Zeugnis vieler Jahrhunderte. Aus der Zeit Karls des Großen blieb der Granusturm erhalten. Places to see in ( Aachen - Germany ) Treasury of Aachen Cathedral
Places to see in ( Aachen - Germany ) Treasury of Aachen Cathedral
The Aachen Cathedral Treasury (German: Aachener Domschatzkammer) is a museum of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Aachen under the control of the Cathedral chapter, which houses one of the most important collections of medieval church artworks in Europe. In 1978, the Aachen Cathedral Treasury, along with Aachen Cathedral, was the first monument on German soil to be entered in the List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Treasury contains works from Late Antique, Carolingian, Ottonian, Staufen, and Gothic times. The exhibits are displayed in premises connected to the Cathedral cloisters.
In 1995, the Cathedral Treasury was completely refurnished in accordance with the newest conservation and pedagogical knowledge. An area of over 600 m2 contains over a hundred artworks, divided into five thematic groups. One conceptional area is the documentation of the Cathedral as the church of Charlemagne. The late gothic silver-gilt Bust of Charlemagne, a model for countless later reliquaries stands in the centre of this section. The Persephone sarcophagus, the Roman marble sarcophagus of the early third century in which Charlemagne was buried in the Cathedral is also here.
Among the objects in the Cathedral Treasury which were connected with Charlemagne is an Olifant from eleventh century (Saracen) Southern Italy or the east, which was long considered the Hunting Horn of Charlemagne. There is also the so-called Hunting Knife of Charlemagne, dating to the eighth century. It and the Petrusmesser in the Bamberg Cathedral Treasury are the only known Medieval knives that were kept above ground and therefore had a special significance from the beginning. All other similar pieces have been found in archaeological contexts. The hunting knife, made of Damascus steel is classified as Anglo-Saxon or Scandinavian. The associated sheath probably dates to the eleventh century and bears an Old English inscription, reading BRHTZIGE MEC FECID (Brythsige made me).
The second section contains objects connected to the liturgy, including the Cross of Lothar (still used today on special occasions), the Aachen Altar, the Carolingian Treasury Gospels, a masterpiece of medieval illumination. In addition there is also the late gothic pieces of goldsmith Hans von Reutlingen.
Artworks which were used at Aachen at the Coronations of the Holy Roman Emperor between 936 and 1531 form a third thematic category, including the masterfully produced ivory situla,[3] a vessel for Holy water made in Trier around the year 1000 and decorated with rich reliefs, as well as the Ottonian Liuthar Gospels which are exemplary of their period.
The relics of the Cathedral and the pilgrimage to Aachen (particularly the Aachen pilgrimage) and the cathedral as a church of Mary are the fourth and fifth categories. The reliquaries and the so-called Hungarian Donations, as well as pictures and sculptures of the Theotokos are displayed here. Gems which donors and patrons (often clergy) gave to the Cathedral treasury are displayed in vitrines. Items from the rich textile collection of the treasury are in constant rotation in the basement, with the coronation cloak, the Cappa Leonis (c.1520), falsely named after Pope Leo III in the centre.

Places to see in ( Aachen - Germany ) Marschiertor
The Marschiertor , until the 17th century also Mies (ch) ierspforte or later called Berseter Tor or Burtscheider Tor , was the southern gate of the outer Aachen city wall . It is one of the most powerful surviving city gates in Western Europe . Its construction began around 1257 and was probably completed shortly after 1300. With the Marschiermitteltor even Burtscheider Middle Gate called, it had a counterpart in the inner ring of walls, known as Barbarossa wall , which had a total of ten goals.
The Marschiertor is built as a twin tower Torburg . The two towers are four-storey, the middle tower five-storey. Towers and central structure form a quasi unity with common pointed tent roof . The gate is a total of 23.8 meters wide, its passage width is 4.8 meters. The field-side portal has three staggered portal arches. The outer arch reaches up to a height of about 13 meters to the second floor, the next with weir platform to a height of about 8.5 meters in the first floor. The actual arched portal has a height of five meters , including the vaults .
Through the two round towers flanking the four-edged central structure, spiral staircases lead into the Waffensaal on the city side. The guard rooms were on the ground floor of the towers, including the dungeons . At the east tower there is an outboard Aborterker . The Marschiertor had like all Aachen city gates - except the Junkerstor (Vaalser gate) - in the southwest originally a Vortor, which was similar to the still preserved Vortor of the Ponttors. It was (probably shortly after the 17th century city fire ) demolished to more modern entrenchment to make room. An excerpt from a painting by Johann Ferdinand Jansenshows the gate in 1796 without Vortor.
The Marschiertor belonged, like the other still-preserved gate, the Ponttor , to the four main gates (Ponttor, Kölntor , Marschiertor and Jakobstor ) of the 14th to 15th century built second city fortification ring Aachen, the so-called Gothic wall , as the southernmost Point. It is at the end of Franzstraße and at the beginning of the former road to Burtscheid that the Burtscheider Obertor (resigned in August 1865) [3] ends. The names Marschier , Mieschiers or Berseter also stem from Burtscheid, which are all polished forms of Burtscheid , Porcetum (Latin name Burtscheids) or the Platt variant.

THE AACHEN CITY HALL IN GERMANY Aachener Rathaus
THE AACHEN CITY HALL IN GERMANY Aachener Rathaus
Places to see in ( Aachen - Germany ) Rathaus Aachen
Places to see in ( Aachen - Germany ) Rathaus Aachen
Aachen Town Hall is located opposite to the Aachen Cathedral and is one of the most striking structures in the Altstadt of Aachen, Germany. It is built in the Gothic architecture. In the first half of the 14th century, Aachen’s citizenry built the city hall under the leadership of its acting mayor Gerhard Chorus (1285–1367) as a sign of their civic freedom. Yet, they had to promise to establish a space in the new town hall that could host the traditional coronation feast that was part of the coronation ceremony of the Holy Roman Empire. Up to then, the nearby mid-13th century Grashaus – which is one of the city’s oldest still-standing buildings – had served the community in that function.
Construction began in 1330 on top of the foundation walls of the Aula Regia, part of the derelict Palace of Aachen, built during the Carolingian dynasty. Dating from the time of Charlemagne, the Granus Tower and masonry from that era were incorporated into the south side of the building. The structure was completed in 1349, and while the town hall served as the administrative center of the city, part of the city’s munitions and weaponry was housed in the Granus Tower, which also served as a prison for some time.
From 1380, the entrance of the Kaisertreppe (Emperor's stairs), which connected the subterranean levels to the Coronation Hall, was adorned by the limestone relief of the Three Kings and a depiction of the Adoration of the Magi. Four limestone blocks formed the relief, with one serving for each king, and the last depicting Mary and Jesus.
Aachen’s city hall survived World War I without sustaining damage, but during civil unrest that arose in the course of a separatists’ movement whose goal was the creation of an independent Rhenish Republic, City Hall was stormed by a group of separatists who caused serious damage both to its interior and exterior. Parts of the façade, such as adorning statues and both clocks, were broken, as were all window panes on the first floor on the Market side. Additionally, several rooms inside the building were ransacked, and many of the famed frescoes within were heavily damaged by gunfire. The furniture (especially that within the mayoral office and Coronation Hall) were damaged as they were used as projectiles. In the Emperor Hall, an undetonated bomb was discovered.
Today, replicas of the Imperial Regalia from the Viennese Imperial Treasury reside in the city hall. These replicas were made around 1915 by order of Emperor Wilhelm II for an exhibition to recall the 31 coronations that took place in Aachen between 813 and 1531. Among the replicas are a copy of the Vienna Coronation Gospels, the Sabre of Charlemagne, the Imperial Crown of Otto I, and the Imperial Orb.
Since 2009, Aachen City Hall has been a station on the Route Charlemagne, a tour program by which historical sights of Aachen are presented to visitors. At the city hall, a museum exhibition explains the history and art of the building and gives a sense of the historical coronation banquets that took place there. A portrait of Napoleon from 1807 by Louis-André-Gabriel Bouchet and one of his wife Joséphine from 1805 by Robert Lefèvre are viewable as part of the tour.

Places to see in ( Aachen - Germany ) Ponttor
Places to see in ( Aachen - Germany ) Ponttor
The Ponttor in Aachen, Germany, (known in the 17th and 18th centuries as the Brückenpforte or Brückenthor) is one of the two remaining gates of the original city wall of Aachen (the other being the Marschiertor). The westernmost of the north-facing gates (the other being the Sandkaultor, which no longer exists), the Ponttor was built in the 14th century and manned by soldiers and militia throughout the Free Imperial City of Aachen era. Today, the Ponttor is used by German Youth and Scout groups belonging to the German Scount Club (1945) and the German Scout Association Saint George.
The Ponttor was constructed as a right-angled three-stock tower castle. In the main entrance, there is a Portcullis as well as a machicolation, through which things could be dropped on invading forces. A bridge passage with crenelations spanned a moat and was strengthened in the foregate with two reinforced towers (barbicans). The building material was Devonian sandstone, Pennsylvanian carbonite sandstone and quartzite, with the framing material made of light bluestone.
Though it is true that Aachen has many rivers and streams that pass through it, none are in the vicinity of the Ponttor, the name for which is assumed to come from the Latin word pons, meaning bridge. However, before the gate was named, the area of the city (as well as the area's main street) already carried this appellation, and thus the city gate is simply named for the area around it. The neighborhood received the name because of a bridge, as during Ancient Roman times, a fortification existed on what is today known as the Annuntiaten stream. Beyond this area lay extensive swamps, and to exit the settlement, one would have to cross a bridge. Later settlements that were built in the area beyond the fortification were said to be beyond the bridge, and from this, the area, street, and city gate all got their names.

Ansprache Umbenennung Aachener Kaserne Bund jüdischer Soldaten
Ansprache Oberstleutnant Prof. Dr. Leopold Weil, Bund jüdischer Soldaten (RjF) e.V. anlässlich der Namensgebung Dr. Leo Löwenstein für die Kaserne in Aachen am 21. Januar 2014.

Arslan TV - Elisenbrunnen (Aachen) ᴴᴰ
~ Wikipedia
