Grassington is a market town and civil parish in the Craven district of North Yorkshire, England. The population at the 2011 Census was 1,126. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, the town is situated in Wharfedale, about 8 miles (10 km) north-west from Bolton Abbey, and is surrounded by limestone scenery. Nearby villages include Linton, Threshfield, Hebden, Conistone and Kilnsey.
The Domesday Book lists Grassington as part of the estate of Gamal Barn including 7 carucates of ploughland (840 acres/350ha) including Grassington, Linton and Threshfield. The Norman conquest of England made it part of the lands of Gilbert Tison. But by 1118 Tison had suffered a demotion and his lands returned to the king then given to Lord Percy.
Originally the settlement was spelt as Gherinstone and also was documented as Garsington or Gersington. The name Grassington derives variously from the Scandinavian, Anglo-Saxon and Gothic languages and means either the town of the grassy ings or a farmstead surrounded by grass.
Grassington was historically a township in the parish of Linton in the West Riding of Yorkshire. It became a separate civil parish in 1866, and was transferred to North Yorkshire in 1974. Although often described by local people as a village, Grassington was granted a Royal Charter for a market and fair in 1282 giving it market town status.
Grassington is the main residential and tourist centre in Upper Wharfedale. Centred on its small cobbled square are shops, public houses, the village museum, small cafes, restaurants and hotels. Grassington Folk Museum houses a collection which tells the story of Wharfedale. Grassington Festival is a two-week-long annual event started in 1980, with music, performance and visual arts, held in a number of venues around the village.
Grassington is served by the B6265, which runs between Skipton and Green Hammerton via Pateley Bridge and Boroughbridge (being a more circuitous route that the A59 road which connects Skipton and Green Hammerton). Buses connect Grassington with Ilkley and Skipton operating a moderate service to Skipton, but only a three-day a week service to Ilkley. The town used to have a joint railway station terminus with Threshfield on the Yorkshire Dales Railway. The station was located on the west side of the River Wharfe, so it was not actually in Grassington.

Lanreath is a civil parish and a village in southeast Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The village is situated five miles west-northwest of Looe. The name Lanreath (pronounced Lanreth) means 'church (Lann) of Raydhogh' and it has been known variously as Lanreythow, Lanrathew, or Lanrethou. The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book as Lanredoch.
Lanreath parish is entirely rural in character; apart from scattered farmsteads, the only two settlements are the hamlet of Bocaddon and Lanreath village. The parish is bordered to the west by Boconnoc and St Veep parishes, to the south by Pelynt parish, to the east by Duloe parish, and to the north by St Pinnock parish.
At the time of the Domesday Book (1086) Lanreath was one of 28 manors held by Richard from Robert, Count of Mortain. There was one hide of land and land for 8 ploughs. There were 3 ploughs, 4 serfs, 4 villeins and 10 smallholders. There were 30 acres of pasture, 40 acres of woodland, 3 cattle and 60 sheep. The value of the manor was 25 shillings.
The church is dedicated to St Marnarck (although it was originally dedicated to St Sancredus). Part of the walls are probably Norman but the church is otherwise of the 15th century; according to Pevsner wholly Perp. and especially complete and satisfying. It was well restored in 1887 by G. F. Bodley. The font is Norman, of the Fowey type, ornate and of Catacleuze stone. The rood crosses both nave and aisle and is substantially original, though restored in 1905. There is more interesting woodwork dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. The monument to Charles Grylls and wife, of 1623, is ornate and unusual, being carved in wood.
Lanreath has a small museum, the Lanreath Farm and Folk Museum, which has preserved artefacts illustrating the everyday life of the people of the district in earlier times. From small beginnings in the 1960s the Facey family have enlarged the museum to the present varied range of exhibits.

Duke's Level
From the 1982 album ' Through Peaks and Dales' by Mike Donald, Folk Singer
DUKE’S LEVEL – A deep drainage level started by Mr. Flint, The Duke of Devonshire’s mineral agent in 1796 in Grassington. The scheme was redesigned by John Taylor, the Cornish engineer in 1818. The song was inspired by the walk from Hebden Gill to the Yarnbury lead mines.

Spitfire and Hurricane 10.07.2011 Movie..wmv
Hi all, just a very quick movie of the Battle of Britain Spitfire and Hurricane flying over Capel-Le-Ferne on 11.07.2011, I took this video with my HTC Wildfire S mobile phone, Windows Movie Maker doesn't like the file type so I had to convert it to a WMW file, so the quality might have been lessened a little.
Ulverston Dickensian Festival
Ulverston Dickensian Festival ( is one of the most popular Dickensian Festival events in the country.
It attracts thousands of people, but it’s not too packed for visitors and local people to wander around and have a fabulous time and savour the wonderful atmosphere of a traditional market town in the Dickensian era.
As a community event, we rely heavily on local people and as a result we often cannot firm up our exact programme until just before the event itself as we are subject to many last minute changes.
As well as Ulverston’s fantastic specialist shops, great pubs and cafes, cobbled streets and atmosphere, there is a huge variety of free entertainment, free events for children, costume competitions, balloon modelling, horse drawn carriages, music and dancing. And its all FREE! Plus a wonderful traditional fairground, complete with Helter Skelter, and lots of music from folk to brass bands.
Why not come in costume and enter into the spirit of the event and take part in our period dress competition and the grand parade around the town which takes place on both days?
