The quiet and picturesque town of Gråsten in Denmark

Gråsten (German: Gravenstein) is a town on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula in south Denmark by the Nybøl Nor at an inlet of the Flensburg Fjord. It belongs to the Sønderborg municipality in Region of Southern Denmark. The town is located almost exactly at the center of a triangle defined by the towns of Aabenraa, Flensburg and Sønderborg Castle. The Egernsund Bridge, which crosses the Egern Strait, connects Gråsten with the town of Egernsund. The Gravenstein apple originates from the city. (source: wikipedia)

Gråsten Palace

Gråsten Castle is best known as the summer resident of the royal family.
The very first castle in Gråsten was a hunting and leisure castle built in the midst of the 16th century. After it burned down in 1603, a new castle was built, probably where the current castle´s south wing is now. Shortly before 1700 the Chancellor Frederik Ahlefeldt built an impressive Baroque castle, which itself unfortunately burned down in 1757, only leaving the castle church. The current Gråsten Castle, or rather the south wing, thus originates from 1759. In 1842 the main building was added.

In 1935 the right of use of the castle was given to the late King Frederik and Queen Ingrid. Queen Ingrid was very interested in flowers and stood for the planning of the garden at Gråsten Castle until her death in 2000.

There is no public access to the buildings and rooms of the castle, except from the palace church, who has special opening hours.

During the stay of the royal family the area is closed to the public and there is no access to the castle-garden and church. The last years the crown prince couple and their children has stayed at the castle from end June, followed by Queen Margrethe II and HRH Prince Henrik.

HRH Prince Henrik past away on the 13 February 2018 in the age of 83 years.

Tuesday July 16th 2019 at 10 am, H.R.H. Queen Margrethe II arrives on-board the royal yacht Dannebrog to Sønderborg. After the greeting in Sønderborg, with flags and flower girls, the journey continued by car to the square ”Torvet” in Gråsten, where H.R.H. is greeted at 10.40 am with a speech by the mayor of Sønderborg Municipality. The castle area will reopen to the public at August 6th some time in the afternoon.

Changing of the guard
During the stay of the royal family, a regiment departs each day at 11.30 am from the yellow Mansion Det Gule Palæ at Ahlefeldvej 5 and marches through the town via Borggade, Torvet and Slotsgade to the palace. This is followed by changing of the guard, which takes place at noon. During the stay of Queen Margrethe II the march is accompanied by flutes and drums and on Fridays you can enjoy a small concert in the palace yard  after the changing of the guard.

Sønderborg, Denmark: A New Cruise Destination

This past summer, I had the opportunity to spend a few days in a destination that eagerly wants to welcome your cruise ships.

S?nderborg, Denmark, is a small city with a natural harbor and a variety of attractions to offer your guests. I was fortunate enough to experience some of the activities during my visit.

Large ships will need to drop anchor, but small ships, up to 135 meters, can tie up along the harborfront, which has amazing access to all that S?nderborg has to offer.

As an avid cruiser, I know it is exceptionally rare for ships to dock in a location that puts guests within easy walking distance of an ancient castle, a charming city center and an extended network of hiking and biking trails, but when your ship ties up in S?nderborg, your guests will have access to all of this ? and much more.

S?nderborg Castle is only a few steps away. The castle has not only a fascinating history, which is interpreted in the castle museum, but also a rousing event called the Tilting of the Rings. I know your guests will enjoy the event as much as I did.

If your guests want to stretch their legs, they can step off the ship and onto a nature trail that runs for more than 70 kilometers.

There are also many opportunities for extended shore excursions.

Just 10 minutes away, thereapos;s a historic battlefield where living history exhibits tell a story similar to the American Civil War. Your American guests will recognize the date, 1864, when their country was embroiled in a deadly war. A similar battle was taking place in Denmark, and the story is well-told

Not far from the battlefield is the summer residence of Denmarkapos;s Royal family. When Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik occupy Gr?sten Palace, there is a changing of the guard just like in Copenhagen (although this one is smaller).

If your ship carries families, youapos;ll be pleased to know that there is a theme park called Danfoss Universe less than 45 minutes drive. Although particularly suitable for kids, visitors of all ages will enjoy this fun immersion into physics and natural science.

So where is S?nderborg? Itapos;s near Denmarkapos;s border with Germany so your guests can actually enjoy a visit to two countries on one stop.

You may want to be a well-established player in the region should S?nderborg succeed in being nominated European Capital of Culture in 2017
