This video was taken when I visited Belgium in 2013. I traveled to Ghent which is a beautiful city with many historic buildings. One of the most famous landmark is the Gravensteen Castle. There is an admission fee to get in but if you have never seen a real castle before, then it's well worth it.

Gravensteen (Dutch for “Castle of the Count”) is a massive stone castle smack dab in the middle of a historic square in downtown Ghent. Rounding a bustling corner and seeing a full medieval castle with a moat and turrets towering over quaint Belgian cafes is one of the more random and stunning sights I’ve experienced in my European travels.
Gravensteen in its current form was built in 1180 by Count Philip of Alsace, and over the centuries was used as the seat of the Counts of Flanders, a courthouse, a prison, and a factory. It eventually fell into disrepair, its walls crumbling and its stone used to build other structures, but the city of Ghent saved it from demolition by buying the property and renovating it beginning in 1865.
Aside from a tour of the extensive grounds, halls, and towers, your admission (10 Euro) grants you access to multiple exhibits featuring medieval armor and weapons. The most popular exhibit is the torture museum, which showcases the methods used to extract information from prisoners detained in the castle’s subterranean dungeons while awaiting trial. Pretty gruesome stuff, for sure.

Gravensteen Castle in Ghent - Belgium 4K Travel Channel
The mighty Gravensteen Castle in the center of Ghent is one of the largest moated castles in Europe. The origin goes back to a wooden building that was probably built by the Vikings on the remains of a Roman settlement. Philip of Alsace built today's castle from 1180 to 1200. It was the residence of the Counts of Flanders, and later it was court and prison. In 1353 Count Ludwig II relocated his residence from Grafenstein Castle to the Hof ten Walle, the later Prinzenhof. The Flemish citizens had always been very rebellious and besieged the castle in 1301 and forced it to surrender.
From 1407 it served as a court seat and from 1780 as a textile factory. Later it was used as a cotton spinning mill.
In 1887, the town purchased the castle back and restored it. Today it serves as a museum.
Visiting Gravensteen Castle
Our visit begins on the ground floor of the Audience Hall. On the first floor is the large hall where the Knights of the Golden Fleece met in 1445.
Today, various medieval weapons and armor are displayed here.
A narrow spiral staircase leads to the viewing platform, from which you have a magnificent view of the city of Ghent.
In the living quarters, one notices that the Countess only had a relatively small chamber, compared to the one of the Count. He had a comparatively large representation room at his disposal.
Next comes the prison in the basement, which was accessible through the dungeon hole. A torture museum with torture tools is also part of the tour.
In the cellar vault, you see a Viking ship.
The executions took place in the inner courtyard.

Die mächtige Burg Gravensteen, zu Deutsch Grafenstein, im Zentrum von Gent zählt zu den größten Wasserburgen Europas. Ihr Ursprung geht auf einen Holzbau zurück, der vermutlich von den Wikingern errichtet wurde. Dieser wiederum wurde auf Resten einer Römersiedlung errichtet. Philipp von Elsass erbaute die heutige Burg von 1180 bis 1200.
Außer als Wohnraum für die Grafen von Flandern diente die Burg nun für die Tagung von Gerichtshöfen und auch Hinrichtungen. 1353 verlagerte Graf Ludwig II seine Residenz von der Burg Grafenstein an den Hof ten Walle, den späteren Prinzenhof. Die flämischen Bürger waren schon immer sehr rebellisch und belagerten unter anderem 1301 die Burg und zwangen sie zur Kapitulation.
Ab 1407 diente sie als Gerichtssitz und ab 1780 als Textilfabrik. Später wurde sie als Bauwollspinnerei genutzt.
1887 kaufte die Stadt die Burg zurück und restaurierte sie. Heute ist sie ein Museum.
Besichtigung der Burg Gravensteen
Der Rundgang beginnt im Erdgeschoss im Audienzsaal. Im ersten Stock ist der große Saal, in dem 1445 die Ritter vom Goldenen Vlies tagten.
Heute werden hier diverse mittelalterliche Waffen und Rüstungen gezeigt.
Über eine schmale Wendeltreppe gelangt man auf die Aussichtsplattform, von der man einen herrlichen Überblick über die Stadt Gent erhält.
In den Wohngemächern fällt auf, dass der Gräfin nur eine relativ kleine Kammer zugestanden wurde. Der Graf hatte einen vergleichsweise großen repräsentativen Raum zur Verfügung.
Es folgen das Gefängnis im Kellergeschoss, das durch das Kerkerloch zugänglich war. Ein Foltermuseum mit Folterwerkzeugen ist ebenfalls Bestandteil des Rundgangs.
Im Kellergewölbe wurde ein Wikingerschiff aufgestellt.
Die Hinrichtungen fanden im Innenhof statt.

Gravensteen, Gent Castle Tour - The Castle of Counts in Belgium
The current castle date to 1180 and was built by Philip of Alsace (1143-1191) on the site of the older fortification. It may have been inspired by crusade castles witnessed by Philip on the Second Crusade. As well a protective citadel, the castle was intended to intimidate the burghers of Ghent who often challenged the Counts' authority.

Gravensteen Castle, Ghent, Belgium
The castle was built in 1180 by Count Philip of Alsace and was modelled on crusader's castles in Syria.The castle served as the seat of the Counts of Flanders until the 14th century. After many other uses it was purchased by the town to save it from demolition and fully restored.
