BEST HIKING in Esquel, Patagonia, Argentina: LAGUNA LA ZETA + CERRO DE LA CRUZ
Come join us for another travel blog from Esquel as we explore some of the best hiking in Patagonia, Argentina by showcasing hikes to Laguna La Zeta and Cerro de la Cruz. Some of the best hiking in Esquel can be done directly from just outside of the city centre. Most of the nearby hikes departing from Esquel are easy half day adventures. Our two favorites were easy hikes to Laguna La Zeta and Cerro de la Cruz. Although you can take a taxi up the hill to the trail section of Laguna La Zeta we'd recommend walking to the trail section if you have the energy because you get some of the best views of Esquel along the way. Laguna La Zeta offers stunning mountain views and calm waters that are perfect for kayaking. Hiking up to Cerro de la Cruz offers you views of Esquel from the opposite direction. Although we didn't make it to the top given the strong winds we'd recommend you do so with proper gear. If you visit Esquel you should definitely consider some of the day hikes on offer as it was our favorite way of spending time in the city.

BEST HIKING in Esquel, Patagonia, Argentina: LAGUNA LA ZETA + CERRO DE LA CRUZ
Hey guys! We are Samuel and Audrey, a travel vlogging couple from Canada. In this travel channel we share our travel and food vlogs while touring the world.
We had the privilege of traveling around Argentina for nearly 3 months from January- April 2019 on a trip covering a large section of the country.
We kicked things off with several days in Buenos Aires where we were joined by Audrey's parents eating and sightseeing around some of our favourite neighbourhoods in the city. We then flew from Buenos Aires to Cordoba where we spent a couple of weeks in the Sierras of Cordoba.
From Cordoba, we then travelled a considerable distance on an overnight bus to Mar Del Plata just in time for a special food festival called Feria Masticar featuring the best of Argentine food and wine. We spent several days enjoying beaches and seafood before heading south to Patagonia to visit the province of Chubut.
While on the Atlantic side of Chubut we visited Puerto Madryn, Peninsula Valdes, Trelew, Gaiman and Dolavon. To summarize our time in this area, we had incredibly close encounters with wildlife including penguins, sea lions and guanacos while also experiencing Welsh culture in Argentina.
Our time in Patagonia continued as we headed from east to west trading more barren landscapes for thick forests, impressive mountains and magnificent lakes. We spent significant time in both Esquel and El Bolson with day trips to visit Trevelin, Parque Nacional Los Alerces, Cholila and Lago Puelo. Highlights included sailing, hiking, riding vintage trains and partaking in the national asado festival.
We finished visiting Patagonia with time spent in Villa La Angostura, San Martin De Los Andes and Bariloche where we enjoyed more stunning scenery and hiking. On our way back to Buenos Aires, we took the Tren Patagonia to Las Grutas before meeting up with Audrey's dad again.
To finish off our trip in Argentina, we spent more time in the capital and later Mendoza where we got to experience wine tourism to its fullest extent. Overall, we had an amazing time travelling around Argentina having only scratched the surface of this vast and diverse country.
Overall our Argentina travel series explores cities, small towns that are off-the-beaten-path, and scenic attractions with a strong emphasis on Argentina cuisine and local culture.

Diving with Sea Lions - Puerto Madryn, Argentina Part 1
Visit us at
The best things to do in Puerto Madryn would be to embark on day trips to Peninsula Valdes, Punta Loma, and Punta Tombo. These ecotourism hotspots are three of the most popular tourist destinations in Argentina. Peninsula Valdes, Punta Loma, and Punta Tombo give tourists the chance to encounter rare wildlife. Each of them offers a unique experience.
Puerto Madryn day trips are excursions that you can take from the city. Even though they're located outside city borders, they can be easily accessed and explored within the same day, hence the term day trips. Puerto Madryn has a strategic location and within close range of Peninsula Valdes, Punta Loma, and Punta Tombo.
Puerto Madryn Day Trips To Peninsula Valdes
Peninsula Valdes is a famous attraction in Argentina that is recognized. Among all the day trips from Puerto Madryn, Peninsula Valdes is the most popular. The area is a protected nature reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Peninsula Valdes is well-known for its unique wildlife and geographic features.
The coastline of Peninsula Valdes is inhabited by an assortment of marine mammals including elephant seals, fur seals, and sea lions. Southern lala right whales may also be spotted in Golfo San José and Golfo Nuevo between May and December to mate and give birth. They come here because water in the gulf is warm. In the open sea right off the coast, you can see orca whales which come and visit to feed on sea lions and elephant seals. Orcas are typically spotted from Punta Norte in April. Among the best things to do in Puerto Madryn is to see these marine mammals.
Other sights to see in Peninsula Valdes are the Magellanic penguins that come to the shoreline between October and March. Other animals are also adding to the list of attractions in Puerto Madryn. This includes wild guanacos, maras, rheas, and the Argentine Grey Fox. There are 181 species of birds, including 61 migratory kinds like the Antarctic Pigeon living in the area. They all make Peninsula Valdes worthy places for Puerto Madryn day trips.
Puerto Madryn Day Trips To Punta Tombo
Following Peninsula Valdes, Punta Tombo National Reserve is the second most popular Puerto Madryn day trip. It is located 248 km south of Puerto Madryn, a mere 2-hour drive from the city. Punta Tombo is a penguin colony that opens from September until April. At which time, almost a million penguins come here for their mating season.
Tourists are allowed to walk alongside penguins but a certain distance must be kept when approaching their nests. Young penguins can be first seen in Punta Tombo around December and January. Apart from penguins, there are other species of birds living here such as king and rock cormorants, kelp gulls, giant petrels, and oystercatchers. One of the things to do in Puerto Madryn is to see all these animals up close. They will make a Punta Tombo day trip worthwhile.
Puerto Madryn Day Trips To Punta Loma
Punta Loma is a sea lion reserve situated 17 km southwest of Puerto Madryn. You can ride a bike to get there but it might sink into the unpaved, sandy road. Hence, the best way to reach Punta Loma would be to use a 4x4 vehicle. In addition to encounters with sea lions, there are lovely rocky beaches in Punta Loma. They will certainly make your Punta Loma day trip memorable.

Southern Right Whale, Puerto Pirámides, Peninsula Valdes, Chubut Province, Argentina, South America
Puerto Pirámides is an Argentine town in Biedma Department, Province of Chubut. Its population as of the 2001 census was 429 inhabitants. It is the only town on the Valdes Peninsula. It began in 1898 when the inland salinas were exploited for salt. One of six nature reserves along Península Valdés, the Punta Pirámide reserve was established in 1974. The only town in Península Valdés, Puerto Pirámides became one of the premier whale watching destinations in the world; the municipality has six hotels, 15 lodges and two campgrounds. Originally inhabited by the Tehuelche people, attempts around 1800 to take control of the area on the part of Spanish and Criollo colonists resulted in a routing by the headstrong Tehuelches. In 1898, Buenos Aires developer Antonio Muno ventured into the exploitation of the area's considerable salt mines, for which he obtained permission to build a rail line and other facilities in 1900. Opting for the calm waters of the Golfo Nuevo, he christened the new settlement Puerto Pirámides for the numerous pyramid-shaped cliffs that overlook the inlet. The disruption of international trade during World War I, however, caused the temporary collapse of the salt market and the closure of the local salt mines. Following bankruptcy proceedings, Muno was forced to cede his share of the land to one of his partners, Alejandro Ferro, who kept the area as a semi-private haven until the Province of Chubut expropriated it in 1958. The inlet was the scene of an as-yet unexplained series of submarine incidents during 1958 to 1960, though afterward, the tiny hamlet drew little interest; tourists preferred nearby Golfo San Jorge, where whale watching was better. During a survey of the area in 1972, famed oceanographer Jacques Cousteau observed that calving southern right whale mothers in a Golfo Nuevo location near Puerto Pirámides had little interest in raising offspring there, despite preferring to give birth at the site. When local entrepreneurs launched the first tourist expeditions later that year, however, calving whales began to stay year-round.

Ballena Jorobada con Marcas de la Mordedura de la Orca o pseudorca Osa Azul, Costa Rica
This is one tough humpback whale judging by the bite marks behind the dorsal fin and on the tail flukes.
Thats why she's called chica brava.
She kicks orca ass but she needs a pelagic park to swim free of net and lines. Not some dinky ring around a little island. A big bold pelagic park in a sustainable marine corridor from the Osa peninsula to Cocos Island and on to the Galapagos. Yeah!
Wouldn't that be nice?

Killer Whale Attack: Orca Beaches Itself To Ambush Seals

OUT of the water, most seals would have every right to feel out of harms way. But off the coast of Argentina, the local killer whales have made even shore a dangerous place to be - by learning to safely beach themselves. With a powerful burst of speed the six-tonne mammals are able to rush onto the shore to ambush seal pups before sliding back into the water on the smooth stones. Amazingly, this behaviour is not thought to be the result of instinct and has instead been taught down the generations - with just a handful of whales using the technique each season. These images were captured by wildlife filmmaker Gil Arbel, 43, at Peninsula Valdes during the seal breeding season, which lasts from January to April.

The OLD PATAGONIAN EXPRESS: Epic STEAM TRAIN Ride in Patagonia, Argentina ????
All aboard the OLD PATAGONIAN EXPRESS! Today we take you one of the most epic train journeys in the world, made even more famous by Paul Theroux's 1979 account The Old Patagonian Express, where he sought to ride trains all the way from his hometown in Massachusetts all the way down to Argentina.
Today, the Old Patagonian Express may only be a fraction of what it once was, but it’s an exciting journey nevertheless, and we knew we had to ride it! This tourist steam train may cover only a short distance, but it’s a fun way to experience the nostalgia of early 20th-century train travel and it also allows you to soak in the magical landscapes of the Patagonian steppe.
To give you a bit more information, in Spanish, this steam train is known as La Trochita; this translates to ‘little gauge’ and it’s a nickname that refers to the train’s super narrow gauge of only 75 centimetres!
The Old Patagonian Express is a railway line was originally planned as part of a larger network that would connect all of Patagonia, however, the project was never completed due to ministerial changes and then the start of the First World War, which also affected Argentina’s economy.
Today the Old Patagonian Express operates on alternating locomotives; one is a Baldwin from the United States and the other a Henschel from Germany. The wooden wagons came from Belgium, and the heaters, well those were later installed in Argentina to make the journeys across Patagonia in winter a little more bearable.
You can take this journey from a few different stations. This one here is the journey from Esquel to Nahuel Pan. When you arrive in Nahuel Pan, you have 45 minutes to visit the artisanal fair, a small museum, and also buy food for a quick lunch. We went for the choripan (chorizo in a bun), alfajores and torta frita.
Overall, we really enjoyed riding aboard the Old Patagonian Express. As we've mentioned this is a classic train journey and if you enjoy train travel, it's well worth checking out!
