GREAT BASIN NATIONAL PARK AND BAKER, Nevada: In Your Backyard
THE GREAT BASIN NATIONAL HERITAGE AREA is a geographical region encompassing White Pine County, Nevada; Millard County, Utah; and the Duckwater Shoshone Reservation that includes nationally significant archaeological, historical, cultural, natural and scenic features emblematic of the entire Great Basin region. Their website will help you learn more about the Great Basin National Heritage Area, its important features, how to best visit the area, and how to become involved with the organization that helps coordinate its promotion and heritage preservation.. The Great Basin National Heritage Area lies at the crossroads of US Highways 50 and 93 and can be conveniently reached from Salt Lake City, Utah, Las Vegas, Carson City or Reno, Nevada. Great Basin National Park in Nevada where we see oldest living thing on Earth - the Ancient Bristlecone Pine and Wheeler Peak - the Southern most Glacier in the United States. See it at:
Just a short drive away from Route 50 within the town of Baker, Nevada is the entrance to Great Basin National Park. It is filled with ancient natural beauty, such as the iconic Bristlecone Pine trees throughout the park, as well as spectacular scenic views. Neek, Sar and I decided to start our exploration by checking out the Great Basin Visitor Center for information and advice.
Before we ventured inside the Visitor Center, we noticed when we parked our car outside of it that there was already a spectacular view to see. The horizon was filled with beautiful mountain peaks!
There was a helpful sign nearby that showed that the highest visible peak was Jeff Davis Peak. It rises up to 12,771 feet (3,830 meters) and looked impressive. But the tallest peak in Great Basin National Park wasn't immediately visible. That was Mount Wheeler, whose peak rises to 13,063 feet (3,982 meters), but was obscured by closer mountains from our view outside the Visitor Center.
There was a wealth of information inside regarding geological facts as well as the history of those who settled in the area. The park takes its name from the Great Basin, a dry, mountainous region between the Sierra Nevada and Wasatch mountains. It protects about 77,180 acres (31,230 hectares) of land. Many of the rocks are from the Cambrian period about 500 million years ago and volcanic activity during the middle and late Cambrian period contributed to the uplift of the surrounding mountains.

The Loneliest Road in America: U.S. Route 50 in Nevada
U.S. Route 50 stretches over 3,000 miles from Ocean City, Maryland in the east to Sacramento, California in the West. Originally part of the U.S. Highway system created in 1926, it was a major transportation route until the creation of the Interstate Highway system in 1956. In 1986, Life Magazine nicknamed the Nevada portion of Route 50 “The Loneliest Road in America,” noting that it is “America minus tourist traps” with only three small towns in 400 miles of empty desert.
I wanted to experience “The Loneliest Road in America” for myself, so I drove west to east from Carson City to the small town of Baker near the Nevada-Utah border. While it is true that the route is pretty desolate, its winding mountain passes and long, open stretches of desert valleys tell the story of a time in American history dominated by Manifest Destiny, Westward Expansion and a Gold Rush. U.S. Route 50 parallels the iconic Pony Express route and you can visit the remains of a few outpost stations to this day. Just off Route 50 in the east, in between the cities of Ely and Baker, lies the beautiful Great Basin National Park – home to the mesmerizing Lehman Caves.

Stargazer Inn and Kerouac's - Nevada
Wheeler Summit trail. Altitude: 13,065 ft. (3,982.3 m.) - Great Basin National Park.
Great Basin National Park is an North American national park located in White Pine County in east-central Nevada, near the Utah border, established in 1986. The park is most commonly entered by way of Nevada State Route 488, which is connected to U.S. Routes 6 and 50 by Nevada State Route 487 via the small town of Baker, the closest settlement.
The park derives its name from the Great Basin, the dry and mountainous region between the Sierra Nevada and the Wasatch Mountains. Topographically, this area is known as the Basin and Range Province. The park is located about 290 miles (470 km) north of Las Vegas and protects 77,180 acres (31,230 ha).
The park is notable for its groves of ancient bristlecone pines, the oldest known nonclonal organisms, and for the Lehman Caves at the base of 13,063-foot (3,982 m) Wheeler Peak. The peak is also home to Wheeler Peak Glacier, which is not the southernmost glacier in the Northern Hemisphere, though described as such by the National Geographic Society, Since the Himalayan glaciers are much further south.
President Warren G. Harding created Lehman Caves National Monument by presidential proclamation on January 24, 1922. The monument was redesignated a national park on October 27, 1986. A number of developed campsites are within the park, as well as excellent backcountry camping opportunities. The Highland Ridge Wilderness lies adjacent to Great Basin National Park. These two protected areas provide contiguous wildlife habitat and protection to 227.8 square miles (590.0 km2) of eastern Nevada's basin lands.
The park has 12 trails ranging from 0.3 to 13.1 miles (0.48 to 21.08 km). Trails range from short nature trails at 6,825 feet (2,080 m) (Mountain View Nature Trail), to the Wheeler summit trail starting at 10,160 feet (3,097 m). The Wheeler Summit trail is quite strenuous, and the altitude presents significant hazards for unprepared or inexperienced hikers. Backcountry routes are occasionally maintained throughout the more remote southern portion of the park. A number of these trailheads are accessible by the road that terminates at the primitive Shoshone campground.

Great Basin National Park Must See Sights
Great Basin National Park is one of the more remote national parks in the lower 48 states, but it's got its unique appeal. Bristlecone Pines, Lehman Caves. and dark sky at night are the main attractions. These attractions with the majestic Wheeler Peak, are well worth the visit, especially given the sparse crowd.
Check out the top, must-see sights at Great Basin National Park in this video.

Day 3 Nevada: Great Basin National Park to Ely
Read more:
On Day 3, we head up towards Great Basin National Park, the only national park in Nevada, which has a reputation for its intricate caves and delightfully uncrowded hikes. Further along the journey, we discover a time machine to the past at McGill Drugstore Museum. With vintage products and nostalgic brands that haven't left the shelves since the 1960's, this isn't your average Walgreen's. Walking down the aisles is a trip down Memory Lane and one more reminder that Nevada is utterly unique. A few more miles and a couple more stamps in my Official HWY 50 passport, and we are on our way. Hitch a ride with us on Day 4...you won't want to miss it.

Baker Archeological Site in eastern Nevada
The Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management brochure (text and illustrations by Marcia E. Phillips) says the following:
The Baker Archaeological Site (also known as Baker Village) was excavated from 1991 to 1994 and a great deal of evidence was collected. After the excavations were completed the site was backfilled, (reburied with the dirt that was removed during excavation), a necessary step in protecting the cultural features that remain, to preserve them for possible future studies. As a result, the foundations of the village can no longer be seen on the surface. The walls that you see are modern walls, built here in 2002. The buried walls were capped to protect them from erosion by wind.

Great Basin National Park - RV Living
We continue south in search of warmer weather and end up in one of the least visited National Parks in the country - Great Basin National Park. The entire drive through northeastern Nevada is pretty lonely and we find what might be the most desolate fuel station we've ever encountered. We mark a milestone at this fuel station and use the opportunity to discuss an app we've used since we hit the road: Once in the park, our first stop is to Lehman Caves. After exploring underground, we head to the highest point in Great Basin National Park, Wheeler Peak. History has shown that altitude + Bri + hiking ≠ success but we're determined to hike to the Wheeler Peak Grove of Bristlecone Pines. This short, twisted, gnarly tree is special because it's the oldest known living tree in the world! Between caving and getting to see one of the longest living life forms on Earth, we'd say Great Basin Nation Park is worth the detour!
