The Canadian Pacific Railway - 1920s Across Canada by Train, All ABOARD!
Historical archival footage of the places and highlights of one of the greatest train journeys in the world, a trip across Canada from sea to sea on the Trans-Canada Limited, Canada's fastest transcontinental train.
The Trans-Canada Limited was considered as one of the world's finest trains in its time. The concept of this train was that of a de luxe ‘Hotel-on-Wheels.' It was the world's longest-distance all-first-class sleeper train, with the fastest time across the North American continent from one ocean to the other.
The Trans-Canada Limited was operated by the Canadian Pacific Railway. It was inaugurated in 1919, just after World War I, and lasted until 1930.
As a result of the economic depression following the great Stock Market Crash of October 1929, it was cancelled in 1931. As with any other CPR passenger train, the equipment was the very best available, yet in June of 1929 the whole train was completely re-outfitted with 10 brand new sets of cars - each set costing in excess of one million dollars.
This early travelogue documents travel across Canada by rail, introducing major cities and places of interest. Traveling over 3,600 miles from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific takes five days to by the Canadian Pacific Railway.
The journey starts in Saint John, New Brunswick on the Bay of Fundy. Highlights of the trip are: Algonquin Hotel; salmon fishing. Quebec City is the oldest city in the North America; The Chateau Frontenac Hotel towering over the St Lawrence.
Montreal is Canadian Pacific headquarters and Trans-Canada Limited. Ottawa is the capital of the nation. Toronto is the Queen City. Niagara Falls is connected to the French River and Georgian Bay. Canadian Pacific steamer carries its passengers across the Great Lakes.
Winnipeg to the prairies and across the prairies through Regina and Saskatoon. Arrival at Calgary and Edmonton. Banff and Lake Louise are located in the Canadian Rockies. Through the Rockies, the train ends in Vancouver where English Bay and Stanley Park are located. The city of Victoria gives an image of England on the Pacific.

Elk vs. Photographer | Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Update: I've been in contact with the photographer in the above video and we would both like to issue a statement regarding the news of the National Park Service's decision to put the elk down.
My statement:
I am deeply saddened by the fate of the elk. It has certainly pulled a black cloud over this whirlwind viral video experience.
I spoke to the reporter who broke the story and she assured me the decision was based on a pattern of aggressive behavior that began prior to the incident documented in this video. The behavior was the result of visitors feeding the elk and conditioning them to seek food from humans. This video only serves as an example of the elk's dangerous behavior, not an impetus to it.
Again, it brings me great sadness to learn of this beautiful animal's demise and the unfortunate circumstances surrounding it.
I'm looking into a destination for proceeds from this video to help the NPS educate visitors on the dangers and consequences of feeding wildlife.
I also want to be clear that James, the photographer, was not complicit in a behavior that led to the elk's demise, but rather was made an example of the result of such behaviors. The elk approached him from behind, likely looking for food as he was conditioned to do.
Statement from James (the photographer):
I love and respect animals and that's why I photograph them and don't hunt them. I am deeply hurt by the loss of such a beautiful creature that in its own way bonded with me. I looked forward to watching him grow to a mature bull as the years passed.
I'm truly heartbroken to know he is gone.
Original video description:
While photographing elk at sunrise in the Cataloochee Valley of Great Smoky Mountains National Park I turned around to see what appeared to be just a curious young bull sniffing a photographer's camera. I snapped a few frames of the apparent harmless encounter.
But the elk became more interested in making trouble than simply the scent of a camera. He started physically harassing the photographer, escallating to full on head-butts.
I quickly switched the camera to video and let it roll (much of the time wondering when I should seriously consider intervening).
Most people who see this ask why the photographer seems to just take the abuse. I asked him in an email what was going through his head. This is his response:
My first thoughts were wow, he's getting pretty damn close here. But I've been up close before without incident. I hoped being still and passive would see him pass on. When he lowered his antlers to me, I wanted to keep my vitals protected and my head down. I felt that standing up would provoke him more and leave me more vulnerable to goring. I think that while protecting myself with my head down, having my head down was a signal that I was rutting with him. I was concerned at first, but when he started rearing back and lunging at me later on, I got scared and pissed off. That's when I wagged my finger at him to cut that shit out. I was relieved to see the Ranger coming.
So I guess at some point if the Ranger hadn't of pulled up, I would have had to disengage the best I could. I've joked with my friends that at least he took me for a buck and not a cow!

Red Rock Canyon, Waterton Lakes National Park, Canada
Beautiful drive. You can see bears and elk if you're lucky. Red Rock Canyon Visitors Centre at the end of the road with lots of parking. Drive is about 10 miles, one way, all paved with numerous pullouts to stop and enjoy the spectacular views. End of parkway is Red Rock Canyon parking with nice quick walk along the river with exposed red rocks on each side, easy to do in 30 minutes if you are pressed for time, but serene enough to stay and relax for longer. Easily accessible and plenty of photo opps. Must admit it is great for the kids. There are longer hikes but often the longer hikes are closed due to bears in the area.
On the road too and back, If you are lucky enough to see a bear, be prepared for what they call a bear jam. Whenever you stop people slow down to see what you are looking at. If you go in September or October should be able see the elk. They gather in a large area for what is referred to as the elk rut and bugling. Anyone in the area can tell you where they are.
I have several more Waterton and Banff National Park HD photo tours at my mikeminnesota-youtube channel. Close to over 200 travel photovideos from Norway, Out West to Alaska.
Driving into Waterton Lakes National Park (4K) | Journey Alberta
Here's a timelapse of the drive into Waterton Lakes National Park, starting from just inside the park gate to the center of the town. Taken while camping there in summer 2016. A great description of the land in and around Waterton is that it is the place where the prairies meet the mountains, and in this video you can see how flat the road is coming into the main townsite. Also shot in 4K resolution!
I use the following equipment to make videos:
A Panasonic G7 at 4K/30fps, a GoPro Hero 4, and a DJI Phantom 3 4K.
Stabilized using a Glidecam XR1000, with camera mounted to a Manfrotto quick release plate
Audio Recorded Using a Rode Video Mic with Rycote Lyre Suspension System
Tripod used is a Manfrotto with a fluid head
Edited on Adobe Premiere Pro CC
