Beginning of the 1941 Terror Against the Jews in Riga Latvia Part I of III.wmv
Come join TheCeļotājs journey through time, as we journey back to the year 1941 and the beginning of the terror of the Jews in Riga Latvia. Starting in the month of June 1941 the Jewish terror began with the Soviet Union's Deportation of prominent Jews. With the Nazi Army entering the City of Riga Latvia on 1 July 1941 the Jews terror and horror starting on the night of 3 July.
Beginning on the night of 13 June and 14 June 1941 the Jewish people's terror began with the Soviet Union's Deportation of prominent Jews. This was only the beginning to what would be a long year of terror for the Jewish people.
Under the Nazi Occupation Authority, the terror and horror began on the night of 3 July 1941 when Jewish people were dragged from their homes where they were either arrested robbed beaten or just murdered. Those who were arrested were taken to the Prefecture Riga City Militia Department Headquarters located at Aspazijas bulvāris 7, the Riga Central Prison, also known as the Zentralka and the house of a Jewish banker located at Krišjāna Valdemāra iela 19. These places can be regarded as one of the main places of integration torture and murder during the summer of 1941.
On 4 July 1941, in the street opposite this house, volunteers of the Security Detachment were registered, all those who wanted, as it was written in the recruiting appeal, to take part in the cleansing of the country from bad elements. Thus the ill-famed Arajs Detachment that played a particularly fatal role in the tragedy of Latvian Jews was created. Tens of thousands of foreign Jews deported to Latvia in order to be murder here by there hands.
On 4 July 1941 with the burning of the Jewish Synagogues located through out Riga. Nazi sympathizers and collaborators began there program of burning all the synagogues located in Riga. The two most listed in Riga history during this horror is the Great Choral Synagogue on Gogola Street and Peitavas Street Peitav Shul Jewish Synagogue. The Great Choral Synagogue was burned to the ground with some 300 Jews locked inside and burned to death. The only synagogue in Riga that did survive the burnings was the Peitavas Street Peitav Shul Jewish Synagogue located at Peitavas iela 6 / 8. The only reason for this was its proximity to other buildings in Old Riga Centre City. For it was located next to other buildings and there was a fear that burning it down would set the other buildings on fire. But it didn't escape being ransacked and turned into a warehouse.
Biķernieku Forest is where the largest site of mass murders and burial of victims of Nazi terror in Latvia is located. From 1941 till 1944, located in 55 mass graves where 35,000 people, including Latvian and Western European Jews, Soviet war prisoners, and the Nazis' political adversaries, were murdered here. In 1943, Riga Ghetto prisoners who were not transferred to the Kaiserwald concentration camp were murdered here, followed in the autumn of 1944 by those Kaiserwald prisoners no longer able to work. Biķernieku Forest is located 3 kilometers east of Riga centre city and on the south side of Biķernieku iela.
The former 1941 Riga Ghetto was located in a small area in Maskavas Forštate where over 30,000 Jewish men women children families and undesirables were concentrated in the small 16 block area which is not larger then a large shoe box were living quarters were assigned not by rooms but by mere square meters, a mere 4 Square Meters per person of roughly 43.056 Square Feet or an area roughly 6 foot by 7 foot or an average bathroom. Where living conditions became inhuman and food became scarce. There was also great poverty, as food rations were given only to those who worked, i.e. to about a half of the ghetto inmates. They had to maintain their 5652 children and 8300 elderly and disabled people. The ghetto only had 16 groceries, a pharmacy and a laundry, and a hospital was arranged. Where some people had barely enough to eat maybe a piece of bread if they were that lucky to even have that!

View of the City of Riga, Latvia from the Academy of Sciences
Come and Join ''TheCelotajs'' and his view of the City of Riga, Latvia from Academy of Sciences Observation Deck. As we look out across the city, we will see another great view of the south section of the City of Riga. Looking northwest we can see the far rear of the Central Market and its many warehouses. As we move left we can see the Daugava River and Salu ''Islands'' Bridge. In this part of the city you can see modern buildings as well as buildings that date back to post World War I. This is also a very poor and depressed area of the city, as one can see when walking through the area. Also further south is the former location of the 1941 Jewish Ghetto area. Also found in this area you will find the Memorial to the Great Choral Synagogue that was burned down by the Nazis on July 4, 1941 with hundreds of Jews locked inside and who died in the flames. The monument dedicated to Zanis Lipke 1941-1945, who saved a large number of Jewish people during this period of time. You can see this in the video City of Riga, Latvia South Section of City. As I walked through the different parts of the area, it ended up making me quite depressed, with people still living in buildings that by all standards should have be condemned and torn down. Moving on, is a view of the Daugava Rives and its west bank. Looking right, we can see the rear if Central Market, Saint Peters Church, Doma Cathedral. We can also see the rear of Central Market and the tent area of the market. Looking left you can see the Iron Bridge Rigas Railway Bridge. Looking down you can see an example of some of the depressed area, with people living in some of these buildings. As we look south, we can see more depressed buildings with modern building mixed among them. Looking southwest, we can see the Salu ''Islands'' Bridge and Rigas Radio and Television Tower. Looking southeast we can see another part of the city and the railway with a passenger train entering the station. Looking down, we can see the Doms of Vissvetas Dievmates Russian Orthodox Cathedral. Still looking down and located on the corner we can see one of Riga Police Station. Looking east, we can see the center city. Looking down again, we can see the railway overpass of Gogola iela and the Latvia Minister of Transportation building. Looking west, we can see the Riga Television Station. I hope you enjoyed the view of the City of Riga from Academy of Sciences Observation Deck. Please feel free to return as many times as you like.

Between 1941 and 1944 around 95 percent of Lithuania’s pre-war Litvak (Lithuanian Jewish) population of over 200,000 men, women and children were murdered by the Nazis and Lithuanian collaborators during the Holocaust.
In 2013, the English photographer Richard Schofield uncovered a collection of 111 family photographs that had been smuggled out of the Kaunas Ghetto into the hands of sympathetic local Lithuanians. We know of no other photographs that were saved from destruction in this way.
The identity and fate of the family in the pictures is unknown.
The Kaunas Requiem will be composed by young Kiev-based musician Anton Degtiariov. The multi-layered composition will be arranged into a score 75 years long, if played in its entirety. A short extract will be performed over a seven-day period to mark the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the Kaunas Ghetto.
The music will be stored in and performed by a computer, and will be comprised of three blended elements:
An original musical composition inspired by the photographs.
Field recordings from various sites in Kaunas.
A ‘reading’ of a list of names of Kaunas Holocaust victims, all the letters of the names being converted into sounds by the computer.
Video projections will illuminate the photographs as the music plays, creating a multimedia experience unique for every visitor.
The installation will be simultaneously broadcast online, and will close with a live Reading of the Names event on Lithuanian Holocaust Remembrance Day, September 23rd 2016. The closing ceremony will be attended by Kaunas residents from local communities and the whole performance will be archived and viewable via the internet anywhere in the world.

Kaunas Synagogue Pt 1
The only synagogue remaining in Kaunas is the Choraline Synagogue. Our guide explains that it survived because the Nazis used this as a warehouse for all the furniture they plundered from the Jews. In the yard of the synagogue is a memorial to all of the Jewish children from Lithuania lost in the Holocaust. Part 2 will show the interior of the synagogue.
Huge Abandoned Synagogue Left To Rot
Built in 1936, the historic building has played a part in some of the city’s most important events over the last 79 years, including acting as a refuge for homeless families during the Blitz.
However, after the congregation dwindled to less than 40, there was only one service held per week and it was eventually shut down in 2007.
