SUMMARY
=======
Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge was established in 1997 to conserve, protect and enhance the abundance and diversity of native plant, fish and wildlife species and the ecosystems on which they depend throughout the 7,200,000-acre (29,000 km2) Connecticut River watershed. The watershed covers large areas of Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Connecticut. It contains a great diversity of habitats, notably: northern forest valuable as nesting habitat for migrant thrushes, warblers and other birds; rivers and streams used by shad, salmon, herring and other migratory fishes; and an internationally significant complex of high-quality tidal fresh, brackish and salt marshes.
The refuge works in partnership with a wide variety of individuals and organizations to provide environmental education, to encourage and support appropriate habitat conservation and management on public and private lands, and to protect additional habitat.
The refuge has three cooperative visitor centers: in Colebrook, New Hampshire; at the Montshire Museum of Science in Norwich, Vermont; and Great Falls Discovery Center in Turners Falls, Massachusetts.
The refuge is named for Silvio O. Conte, a late, longtime member of the United States House of Representatives for Massachusetts who worked to preserve and protect the environment.

Update: 4 college softball players killed in Oklahoma bus crash identified
Authorities say they are still investigating a deadly crash involving a bus carrying college students and a semi-truck.
Shortly after 9 p.m. on Friday, the bus, which was carrying the girl’s softball team from North Central Texas College, was hit by a semi-truck along I-35 in Murray County, near Turner Falls.
Officials with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol say three students died at the scene of the accident.
The Department of Public Safety says 19-year-old Meagan Richardson, 18-year-old Katelynn Woodlee and 20-year-old Jaiden Pelton all died at the scene from massive injuries.
However, a fourth student died at a hospital in Sulphur a short time later.
Authorities say 20-year-old Brooke Deckard was pronounced dead at the hospital from massive injuries.
The students had just played a softball game at Southern Nazarene University and were on their way back to Texas at the time of the crash.
Authorities say a semi-truck was heading northbound before it crossed over the center median and hit the team’s bus.
The bus rolled over in the crash, and the semi headed off the roadway into a wooded area.
The bus was headed back to the college when the semi-truck crossed the center median.
In addition to the deaths, several other people were injured in the crash.
According to the Department of Public Safety’s report, there were 16 people on the bus at the time of the accident.
Everyone was taken to the hospital but most were treated and released for minor injuries.
Three students were admitted to various hospitals across the state in stable condition.
Dr. Brown Wallace, president of the North Central Texas Community College District, released the following statement on Saturday morning.

Deerfield River - documentary - start
In terms of Connecticut River tributaries, the Deerfield River's watershed is second in size only to that of the Chicopee River. The 675 square mile watershed is comprised of sixteen towns in Vermont and twenty towns in Massachusettts. The Deerfield drainage contains fascinating geology, old growth forests, thrilling whitewater, and diverse fish populations, all of which are highlighted in this film.
A fascinating evolution of transportation has occurred up the Deerfield River Valley from its ancient Mohawk Trail to Shelburne's Electric trolley, though the building of the Hoosac Tunnel and Hoot Toot & Whistle Railroads. Another compelling chapter has been the construction of Deerfield's many dams. This film covers these topics and more as it attempts to encapsulate the human history of the drainage.
As with most other rivers, the Deerfield faces numerous conservation challenges. Particular areas discussed in this film are land preservation in the watershed, stewardship of the River and its tributaries, and difficulties involving flow management.

Calgary Downtown Flooding Alberta Floods Canada 2013
In June 2013, Alberta, Canada experienced heavy rainfall that triggered catastrophic flooding throughout much of the southern half of the province along the Bow, Elbow, Highwood and Oldman rivers and tributaries. A dozen municipalities declared local states of emergency on June 20 as water levels rose and numerous communities were placed under evacuation orders. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police stated four people may have drowned near High River. Two bodies have since been recovered with a third discovered, but unreachable. Over 100,000 people have been displaced throughout the region.
Meteorology:
Situated east of the Canadian Rockies, southern Alberta is a semi-arid region that does not usually receive high amounts of rainfall. A high-pressure system in northern Alberta drew a system of heavy rain into the province from the south, causing rainfall amounts of over 100 millimetres (3.9 in) to fall in less than two days in many regions of the province, particularly west and southwest of Calgary in the foothills and eastern slopes of the Rockies. In Canmore, a town in Alberta's Rockies, over 220 millimetres (8.7 in) fell in 36 hours, nearly half of the town's annual average rainfall. The accumulation of rainfall caused rivers to rise as the surge passed downstream. At the peak of the flooding, the Bow and Elbow rivers were flowing through Calgary at three times their peak levels from a 2005 flood that caused C$400 million in damages.
Impact:
In Calgary, Alberta's largest city, 75,000 people from 25 communities, primarily in the inner city, who live in the vicinity of the Bow and Elbow rivers were ordered to evacuate their homes as the rivers spilled over their banks and flooded several neighbourhoods, including the city's downtown core, causing officials to ask that the 350,000 people who work in the downtown stay home on June 21. All schools in both the public and Catholic school districts were closed and officials urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel.
The city's primary arena, the Scotiabank Saddledome was among the facilities damaged as flood waters were reported to have filled up to the first 10 rows of the lower seating bowl. The Calgary Stampede grounds adjacent to the arena were also severely flooded, less than two weeks before the scheduled opening of the annual exhibition and rodeo, however civic officials vowed the event would go on.
South of Calgary, the Town of High River was evacuated after flooding of the Highwood River caused water to rise over the top of vehicles in the town's main streets and necessitated the rescue of over 150 people from the rooftops of their homes. 350 Canadian Forces personnel and 80 Edmonton Police officers were dispatched to assist with rescue efforts. The mountain towns of Banff and Canmore, west of Calgary, were cut off from neighbouring communities after flooding and mudslides forced the closure of the Trans-Canada Highway. Several homes were swept away in Canmore by the rise of Cougar Creek.
In addition to Calgary, High River and Canmore, nine other municipalities, including the City of Lethbridge; the towns of Black Diamond, Cochrane, Sundre and Turner Valley; the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass; Rocky View County; and the municipal districts of Bighorn No. 8 and Foothills No. 31, had declared states of emergency on June 20 due to flooding and some communities had evacuated residents. Additionally, the City of Red Deer declared a state of emergency over the potential of flooding ahead of a planned release of water from the Dickson Dam into the Red Deer River.Local state of emergency issued for Red Deer. Edmonton Journal (Postmedia Network). June 20, 2013. Retrieved June 20, 2013. The City of Medicine Hat, located on the South Saskatchewan River downstream from the confluence of the Bow and Oldman rivers, followed suit on June 21 by declaring its own local state of emergency.

The OLD PATAGONIAN EXPRESS: Epic STEAM TRAIN Ride in Patagonia, Argentina ????
All aboard the OLD PATAGONIAN EXPRESS! Today we take you one of the most epic train journeys in the world, made even more famous by Paul Theroux's 1979 account The Old Patagonian Express, where he sought to ride trains all the way from his hometown in Massachusetts all the way down to Argentina.
Today, the Old Patagonian Express may only be a fraction of what it once was, but it’s an exciting journey nevertheless, and we knew we had to ride it! This tourist steam train may cover only a short distance, but it’s a fun way to experience the nostalgia of early 20th-century train travel and it also allows you to soak in the magical landscapes of the Patagonian steppe.
To give you a bit more information, in Spanish, this steam train is known as La Trochita; this translates to ‘little gauge’ and it’s a nickname that refers to the train’s super narrow gauge of only 75 centimetres!
The Old Patagonian Express is a railway line was originally planned as part of a larger network that would connect all of Patagonia, however, the project was never completed due to ministerial changes and then the start of the First World War, which also affected Argentina’s economy.
Today the Old Patagonian Express operates on alternating locomotives; one is a Baldwin from the United States and the other a Henschel from Germany. The wooden wagons came from Belgium, and the heaters, well those were later installed in Argentina to make the journeys across Patagonia in winter a little more bearable.
You can take this journey from a few different stations. This one here is the journey from Esquel to Nahuel Pan. When you arrive in Nahuel Pan, you have 45 minutes to visit the artisanal fair, a small museum, and also buy food for a quick lunch. We went for the choripan (chorizo in a bun), alfajores and torta frita.
Overall, we really enjoyed riding aboard the Old Patagonian Express. As we've mentioned this is a classic train journey and if you enjoy train travel, it's well worth checking out!

The OLD PATAGONIAN EXPRESS: Epic STEAM TRAIN Ride in Patagonia, Argentina ????
Hey guys! We are Samuel and Audrey, a travel vlogging couple from Canada. In this travel channel we share our travel and food vlogs while touring the world.
We had the privilege of traveling around Argentina for nearly 3 months from January- April 2019 on a trip covering a large section of the country.
We kicked things off with several days in Buenos Aires where we were joined by Audrey's parents eating and sightseeing around some of our favourite neighbourhoods in the city. We spent several days enjoying beaches and seafood before heading south to Patagonia to visit the province of Chubut.
Our time in Patagonia continued as we headed from east to west trading more barren landscapes for thick forests, impressive mountains and magnificent lakes. We spent significant time in both Esquel and El Bolson with day trips to visit Trevelin, Parque Nacional Los Alerces, Cholila and Lago Puelo. Highlights included sailing, hiking, riding vintage trains and partaking in the national asado festival.
We finished visiting Patagonia with time spent in Villa La Angostura, San Martin De Los Andes and Bariloche where we enjoyed more stunning scenery and hiking. On our way back to Buenos Aires, we took the Tren Patagonia to Las Grutas before meeting up with Audrey's dad again.
To finish off our trip in Argentina, we spent more time in the capital and later Mendoza where we got to experience wine tourism to its fullest extent. Overall, we had an amazing time travelling around Argentina having only scratched the surface of this vast and diverse country.
Overall our Argentina travel series explores cities, small towns that are off-the-beaten-path, and scenic attractions with a strong emphasis on Argentina cuisine and local culture.

2018 Oppenheimer Lecture with Michael S. Turner
What happened before the big bang & other big questions about the universe
Big ideas like the deep connections between quarks and the cosmos and powerful instruments like the Hubble Space Telescope and Large Hadron Collider have advanced our understanding of the universe dramatically. We can now trace its history from the big-bang beginning 13.8 billion years ago through an early state of quantum fluctuations to a soup of quarks and other particles, from the formation of nuclei and atoms to the emergence of stars and galaxies, and finally to its expansion today. This lecture will describe what we know, what we are trying to figure out and the excitement of the adventure.

Using all the information from the course thus far, we explain how the Chernobyl accident happened from a technical point of view (and briefly explain the failings of Soviet culture which led to the cascading human errors). The RBMK design is shown to have positive feedback coefficients, a physically dangerous situation, which along with lack of operator knowledge about long-term neutron poison transients (xenon buildup and decay) led to the 600x increase in power in four seconds, which itself led directly to the explosion, fire, and scattering of radiation around Europe.

It all started with a bunch of footprints at a construction site. Or at least the modern-day fascination with “Bigfoot” did. Stories of hairy giants in the woods and wandering “wild men” had been a part of American lore for nearly two centuries by the time the nickname “Bigfoot” was coined in the late 1950s. But it was then, with the advent of television and the modern media, that chasing down giants in the woods became a national craze.
It was the spring of 1957 and a road construction project was underway near Bluff Creek in northern California. The project was run by a contractor named Ray Wallace and his brother, Wilbur. They hired thirty men that summer to work on the project and by late in the season, Wilbur Wallace reported that something had been throwing around some metal oil drums at the work site. When winter arrived that year, cold weather brought the work to a halt, even though only ten miles of road had been completed.
In early spring 1958, some odd tracks were discovered near the Mad River close to Korbel, California. Some of the locals believed they were bear tracks. As it happened, this was close to another work site that was managed by the Wallace brothers.
Later on that spring, work started up again on the road near Bluff Creek. A number of new men were hired, including Jerry Crew, who drove more than two hours each weekend so he could be home with his family. Ten more miles of road were constructed, angling up across the face of a nearby mountain. On August 3, 1958, Wilbur Wallace stated that something threw a seven-hundred-pound spare tire to the bottom of a deep gully near the work site. This incident was reported later in the month, after the discovery of the footprints.
On August 27, Jerry Crew arrived for work early in the morning and found giant, manlike footprints pressed into the dirt all around his bulldozer. He was at first upset by the discovery, thinking that someone was playing a practical joke on him, but then he decided to report what he found to Wilbur Wallace. At this point, the footprints had not been made public. That occurred on September 21, when Mrs. Jess Bemis, the wife of one of the Bluff Creek work crew, wrote a letter to Andrew Genzoli, the editor of a local newspaper. Genzoli published her husband's Big Foot story and caught the attention of others in the area. One of these was Betty Allen, a newspaper reporter who suggested in a late September column that plaster casts should be made of the footprints. She had already talked to local Native Americans and interviewed residents about hairy giants in the area. She convinced Genzoli to run other stories and letters about Bigfoot. This would be the beginning of a story that would capture the imagination of America.
On October 1 and 2, Jerry Crew discovered more tracks, very similar to the first ones. In response to the new discovery, two workers quit and Wilbur Wallace allegedly introduced his brother Ray to the situation for the first time, bringing him out to show him the tracks. On the day after the last tracks were found, Jerry Crew made plaster casts of the footprints, with help from his friend Bob Titmus and reporter Betty Allen. He was irritated that people were making fun of him and wanted to offer the casts as evidence that he wasn’t making the whole thing up. On October 5, Andrew Genzoli published his now-famous story about Bigfoot. It was picked up worldwide by the wire services, and soon the term was being used in general conversation.
